Hi all.

Question for those that own any petrol variant of x20i

Is 3-6 seconds of white smoke on startup (assumed cold). But then go away something to be worried ? Is this related to something to do with coolant leaking in to the engine/head gasket issues

A few puffs can just be from moisture in the exhaust system.

I have had a look on YouTube..it looks like if there is something else gone like coolant leaking or head gasket you would be bellowing smoke (a lot of it) continuously.

The one I saw I could only describe as within the first 3-8 or 9 seconds as it was pulled out of its parking spot so I could test drive it

I had no idea the X3M could be spec'd with a tow bar. Clearly a diesel would be better suited (I'm told it will do 13mpg with a van on the back of it). But, I wouldn't be towing for thousands of miles so I think it's something I could deal with. A bit more than I'd originally want to spend however the X3M has always been on the back of my mind. It's no X5 inside, and an X5 M50d/M50i would be much more comfortable, but I think I could forgive it as it'll have better driving dynamics. Still lovely inside, newer tech vs my F80, laser lights etc, and I think the boot is just enough bigger than the Tiguan where I could get a divider and have our bags on one side and the dog on the other. Tempted to go look at this one.

Does anyone have an idea about this weird engine noise from a 330Li? I came across this on another forum and thought I should check here and hopefully update the OP on the other forum.
Appreciate your inputs. :)

out of curiosity, do people really go for the body work insurance cover / alloy wheel cover when buying from BMW? or not worth it ? i wouldnt usually bother, however, i was investigating to see if its worth purchasing some small sections of PPE (paint protection film type stuff for the higher risk areas of chips or marks (IE bumper by the boot), maybe some of the front bumper

Has anyone used clear PPE film before?

usually in cars the bumper by the boot opening gets a few marks despite how careful i am, i usually get stonechips by my front bumper as they dont clean the stones up off the roads.

An alloy refurb is ~£100 a wheel, so unless you're destroying 4 wheels and tyres a year it doesn't make financial sense. Likewise PPF would potentially be worth it on a brand new car, but for something 5+ years old which most likely already has scratches and dings, it's not worth paying 15%+ of the cars' cost to have it installed. Also putting PPF on the rear is pointless. The damage will largely be concentrated on the grill and bonnet.

Also, also, aren't you always saying you have a hard budget limit of 15k? If you're looking at adding on another 2k for wheel insurance and PPF why not look at newer/lower mileage cars instead?

I would recommend a test drive along some bumpy roads. I went in one some months ago and the ride was very very firm, comparable to my M2 which is not brilliant
