Because they waited for the next generation, expecting more price/perf. Like any other normal time. Except the Nvidia cards turned out rubbish and there are no other cards in stock now.

It's high demand and incredibly low supply. That's why prices are so high.

It would have been a smart move actually buying a 4070ti super or 4080 super even last summer.

Because the 2023 launches were poor value for money and it was only well into 2024 where the average street prices for the new generation were decent.

So it's just upgrading for the sake of upgrading, not to actually get the performance, or price/performance you want....

I'm sorry but my mind just doesn't think like that, and it's difficult to understand that mindset.

Precisely. So would I, and so would likely 90% of the people buying a GPU now. Especially if you had the same crystal ball as apparently some people do, and knew the 5000 series would be such a small improvement in perf.

You're right, an 8gb 3070 or 10gb 3080 will be mustard for another 2 years.

not really its normal people upgrade in cycles 4-5 years

during covid demand skyrocketed 4/5 years ago all those systems are now getting old Hell even the bigger tech channels have brought this up over the last few months expecting it to happen

I wouldn’t say that. If next gen significantly outperforms this gen then people will definitely be tempted to trade up. If UDNA is as good as we hope then I will be first in line to give my 9070xt to my kids and get a more high end card.

and everyone said wait for early 2025 while Nvidia and amd both stoped production of last gen chips

now if you could buy a 4070s still at a discounted price we wouldnt be seeing this as much but they are all gone or near zero stocks

I've been reading most of these threads and there a lot of angry people and they're not all youtubers. GN is reflecting their thoughts/opinions.

I'm genuinely surprised at the (real, not performative) anger towards AMD on these forums. Looking at the big picture, it seems there are two possibilities. 1) This version of fake 'MSRP', i.e. limited rebates, feels worse than NVIDIA's fake 'MSRP', or 2) people expected deceit/BS from NVIDIA but hoped AMD would be better.

AMD do seem to have put a target on their back by describing the rebates as coming directly from them. There's radio silence from NVIDIA, so you can't be 100% sure that they are the ones screwing you. Maybe that's the difference.

Literally all I wanted is possibility of buying a GPU at 2pm through order system, without the system going down, OOS, then prices going up, order cancelled, 99% through payment process, crash, OOS, prices going up etc.

It's a joke.

I have a pure on order, lets see if it comes into stock/sent from a competitor.

But then you have people spending £3k on a 5090, so you get the full spectrum here :D

It's funny how AMD are getting hate for providing rebates, when Nvidia have done two drops of FE cards and called it a day.

Which ties into what I was saying about the weirdness around the whole supply chain and what @SuperElectric is saying about Nvidia and not being sure who's screwing you over... On one hand I understand that businesses exist to make a profit, but there's profit and there's profiteering (from a self-inflicted supply shortage).

The AMD rebate (in UK) was for 5-10% of cards on launch day, never to be repeated. Nvidia make their own MSRP cards (FE) and will drop every few weeks for years like the last gens.
So the AMD situation is actually worse!
