Always get a car, works out so much cheaper out of season plus gives you means to do stuff when you're not riding or to go elsewhere and not be at the mercy of a bus schedule!

Not a bad shout. From a quick search it is coming out at £110 which is less than I'd have guessed.

I remember looking to book a car in Geneva a few years back and it came out at something like £23,456,949 so I've just assumed it is going to be silly expensive everywhere.

So the chucking the bike on the bus idea wasn't all that successful. It turns out that you can take your bike box on the bus, but only certain busses. Some bus routes are served by the style of bus we're used to in this country, i.e. with no storage underneath; and some routes have coach style busses where there is plenty of storage for suitcases etc underneath. You can take it on the latter style busses. And the A12 bus route isn't served by the coaches.

Although the bus driver did deliberate for a while, he refused to allow it on in the end.

So it is hit and miss, depends on the type of bus running the route, so don't rely on it.

Looking at going away in the summer but driving down to the french alps or possibly italian dolomites, now i've done Bourg D'Oisans, so Alpe D'Huez, Col Du Glandon, Galibier etc all nice and close, but wondering what other good bases you have stayed in that have access to some of the great climbs. We were looking at 3 weeks, but wife doesn't have much holiday left, so probably likely to be 2 weeks now, so may even look at having 5 or 6 nights in 2 places. Will likely take my road and mtb bikes too and get an uplift day or two in.

Booked this all up now, got 5 nights in Dolomites, 3 over in Trento region and then 5 on edge of Black Forest. Now time to find some routes. @AndyCr15 i think you went black forest a few years back? Any recommendations?

I live an hour from Bourg d'Oisans and it's one of the best places in the Alps - not just for Alpe d'Huez. Bourg St Maurice is also a great spot with some great rides over the Petit St Bernard, Cormet de Roseland and Col de l'Iseran as well as all the ski stations in the valley towards Albertville.

And if you pass towards Grenoble, stop by for a cup of tea and I'll give you some hints on the Vercors, which have some fabulous rides.

Are you south of Grenoble if you know the Vercors? We had a week in Crolles in summer 2023 and I did a solo day through the Chartreuse which I thought was utterly superb. Beautiful but so quiet.

Yes, just next to a village called Vif - the Tour de France stage departure tomorrow. Lot's to explore around here on your bike.

Nice! I enjoyed what felt being off the beaten track but still some big 40 to 60 minute long climbs. I also rode up the Bastille in Grenoble one day. That was horrible, some serious face pulling went on.

Thanks, that holiday has been and gone, have been to Bourg (well Vaujany) before when I did the Marmotte and it is a fantastic place to ride. The dolomites is definitely one to go back to for a longer period! I would have done more but managed to chop the end of my finger off on the MTB at the end of the first week, so no more riding properly, so didn't get to explore Black Forest much, but managed to get up the Stelvio (although didn't ride down it with a huge splint hindering my braking)

I rode the Marmotte seven times in the early 2000s, and these days I prefer to ride the circuit alone - and without having to pay 100 euro. I did ride an event called the Brevet de Randonneur des Alpes last weekend which is something similar with Croix de Fer, Galibier and Sarenne, where the goal is to finish rather than have timed classification at the end. There's a hot meal in Valloire where it's nice to have a pause and chat with other riders.

The Stelvio is on my to-do list, and I find myself watching Youtubes every once in a while to remind me I need to do it.

Bourg is great
we've been to Alps twice, and twice we stayed past top of Ornon...yes...we had to climb back up it every single time when we cycled LOL

That would be with Guy and Helyn if I'm not wrong when they were running the King of the Mountains guest house up there.
