*** The Official Elite: Dangerous Thread ***

I believe the part you need to give the engineer is called meta alloy and it's only available from a few places and quite pricey or you can try to mine it I've not done it myself yet as I'm farming materials first.
If you go on to the galaxy map, you can change route options from economical to fastest to greatly reduce the amount of jumps, couple this with a fuel scoop and you can get around a lot quicker.
They're easy to find now, just go to a titan ruin and there's usually loads kicking around.

I purchased a..... Cobra MKIII I think as it said it was a good all rounder which suits me trying new stuff and it was pretty cheap.
Didn't enjoy the basic mining loop and also it really made my FPS twitchy in VR and occasional drops even playing non-vr.

the cobra III allows you to do a bit of everything and its the iconic elite ship so worthy of being in everyones hanger...... it is fairly limited for a lot of stuff however.

mining is a chill out thing for me (basic laser mining at any rate) however the cobra is not a great ship for it. i think you may find it slightly more engaging with a bigger ship when you can have a whole swarm of collector limpets and strip a prospected rock within seconds.

if you want to make decent coin then mine in pristine metallic rings ideally find a platinum hotspot and drop in there and look for the 3 Ps platinum, palladium, panite, then add in osmium other than that it is up to you (i cant ignore gold as it just seems rude) and depends how many hoppers your refinery has. (but stuff like gallite just exclude)

always use prospector limpets as you get extra stuff and you can stop wasting time on junk rocks.

i use a type 10 but that is expensive, but the type 7 is decent, even the type 6 useful. others like the asp are good too but personally i like a more industrial looking ship for mining (purely for my role play)

Yeah I only had 20 cargo space so having limpets seemed like I was wasting it somewhat. I didn't have much money left to expand cargo etc and it's probably far from optimal (I'm not looking at meta builds).
Only thing I've really looked up to save my sanity is where certain things were on sale as I don't believe there's an in-game way of doing so.

systems which are control by li yong rui give you a nice discount on ships and i think equipment as well..... that is regardless of if you pledge to him via power play or not. however IF you pledge to him for powerplay as well you should find the money flows much faster.

i know you said you do not want to do meta builds and i agree with you completely, i am the same however consider moving home to Diaguandri, Ray gateway...... its a nice system with a lot of stuff for sale and good discounts.

PS if you sell a ship remember to always strip it down before you sell the hull, you do not lose any money selling old parts but lose.... 10% i think of everything when you sell the hull.

Cobra III is my favourite mixed use ship. I have exploration/foot mission focussed one for darting around and another for low level combat. It's a really nice ship that can do several things well. I loved it when I was chasing engineers because a decent jump distance a little bit of cargo, fast enough to escape pirates and cheap to buy and upgrade. Also looks cool.

the cobra mk V i think is going to pretty much make every other small ship obsolete... which i am torn over to be honest.

Just needs to be available for in game credits already, FDEV are milking new ships for all they can it seems, bit annoying to see them announce several new ships as part of the 2025 roadmap knowing that most of them will only be available if you spend real money on them otherwise you'll likely need to wait until 2026 for all bar one, possibly two. And while I'm having a moan it's also out of order that LEP holders don't get any early access to them via in game credits.

How do you find that stuff out though organically? I've not pledged to anything on PP yet as I don't want to be learning yet another system whilst I'm grappling some of the basics still. In terms of direction, I've just been heading towards the centre from the bubble, I keep Sag A ahead of me and move along.
Good tip on the modules, I should do that for the parts on my Eagle (the eagle itself I don't think has a price as everything is 'loaned'.

Galnet News: https://community.elitedangerous.com/

It should be the same as the Galnet section in the station services options I believe, stuff like the Li Yong Rui discount was likely on there at some point but unless you want to spend the next month catching up it's going to be word of mouth like forums and in game chat. I know there is an option for some stuff to be read aloud to you in game but I don't know if that covers Galnet articles.

Nowadays you have the "codex" built in to the game which may hint at things like this, or in some cases actually explicitly state actual details on stuff like this, would you believe. Back in the days before that you basically had no chance of gleaning any of these little tips by yourself in game as a new player and you just had to rely on forum advice and youtube videos. For example, I don't think I would ever have sussed the "throttle down to 75% on exactly 7 seconds remaining supercruise travel time to a station/planet to ensure never overshoot" tip in game without seeing it on a forum.

Why does it annoy you so much? The game is free and it costs less than a tenner on sale for new players. They've got to make money somehow and the content that's been happening in the game recently has been top notch. If you don't like the ships being for sale, don't buy them. I personally bought both the Mandalay, and the Cobra Mk V, and some paint jobs, and I've had far more than my money's worth out of them, especially the Mandalay which has become my absolute favourite ship.

It also gave me the opportunity to buy my son a ship to let him join me Titan bombing in the game for the event in December, which cost me a total of £12.99 for the ARX credits, but it got him a ship that would have taken hours and hours for an equivalent just to take part in the event. And it didn't give him any advantage over anything, he still had a tough time doing it so it's not like it's pay to win, but it did give him a headstart and loads of enjoyment. I've spent far less than a pub meal on both him and myself.

Considering I haven't spent anything else on Elite for years, and I've also only spent around £75 total for ten years of enjoyable gameplay, I really don't see what the issue is.

Just to add, tonight I'm going to be buying the Chrome paint job for my Mandalay, and if I'm feeling flush, I'll pick up the Cobra Mk V as well

Bought this year's ago but never played it, I have it on PlayStation and Steam(got PC and steamdeck).

Feel like giving it a run through, would probably play it more on steamdeck.

What's the best introduction video for noobs, and how long would it take to get into?

It doesn't annoy me that much, why do you think it does? I even said a 'bit' as in not much, it's a mild annoyance at most and that's when it even enters my thoughts which is generally only when discussing it someplace like this but a) because I paid them for the LEP and a part of that was early access to content, ships are content and should be included in that and b) it's completely against what they said would happen with microtransactions in the game, they stated it would only ever be cosmetics.

Don't make the mistake of over egging how much it annoys me, I'm just stating an opinion about it and it's not meant to come across that I am raging about it, would I like to see it otherwise, sure, does it stop me playing or keep me up at night, no chance lol.

I get what you are saying about it being free (well, subscription free) but it was never intended to ever have one, that said I've bought more than a few cosmetics with the same reasoning but having spent £130 on the LEP and gotten Horizons, a few skins I've never used and the ugh mess that was/is Odyssey my brain insists I'm still down by around £60 lol, it's ridiculous considering the amount of time I played for which has made it exceedingly cheap entertainment per hour (I'm conveniently ignoring money spent of tech to play it...) and likely to be even more so if they keep adding content like they have been.

Playstation version is out of date as it stopped getting any updates a while back when Odyssey launched I think, it's Horizons with a few updates but now effectively abandoned.

There are basic tutorial videos linked in the main menu, there is also several training modules that will give you the basics.

How long it will take you get into? A few hours for basic controls probably, depends on if you have any space/flight sim experience which helps a lot, could be many hours of playing to get into everything, I've got weeks of game time and still don't know how big chunks of the game work.

Apologies, I wasn't trying to insinuate that you were raging, I read and replied on my phone and didn't have the proper frame of reference from your post so just remember you saying it annoyed you and took it from there. My intention wasn't to suggest that it made you more annoyed that it actually does!

I ended up picking up the Chrome paint job for my Mandalay, and it looks amazing. I've also managed to purchase my fleet carrier today after returning back to the Bubble with Exobiology from four systems to the total of around 900 million credits. Not bad. It's now jumping over to where I ended up with the Exobiology so that I can find more to fund the future of the carrier! Circle of life I guess!

in truth the in game literature is pretty poor. most of what I know about elite is because I kind of grew with it each feature at a time from early alpha
.however this is a lot o don't know as well. the offers that different powers give I suspect will be in the in game wiki pedia which is in game from the right hand panel iirc.
however inara and a few other sites are practically officially endorsed

I play on Steam deck and it is ok for some things but not ideal. I certainly would not like to learn the game on it. the text is hard to reason on it . maybe the oled screen is better but mine is lcd

the basics are easy enough to get into.

for advice in game down to earth astronomy was good back in the day and I think he is called Ricardos gaming does some good modern stuff
