The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Ain't been in here for a while!

So I've decided to sell my R5 and 24-70L to fund an upgrade to the R5mk2.

Selling the 24-70L feels weird as I've always had one, first both EF versions and now the RF. However I got a 24-105L a while back as it's a much better travel lens - smaller, lighter and with more reach.

Since then I'm struggling to justify keeping the 24-70 as the image quality between the two is pretty much on par and I don't really need the extra stop.

Time will tell if I regret it or not.

So erm, I wanted a more sturdy tripod for shooting video that my lightweight Sirui carbon travel tripod. Saw this come up on the bay collect only, they accepted £135, just picked it up.

Manfrotto 504HD head and 546 legs. They were being used in a church, apart from one plastic knob that's broken it's mint.

Perhaps gone a little too far along the axis of lightweight <-> sturdy mind :p Might need to move it on and get something a bit more luggable, but will give it a go

Well, after replacing the broken knob, I flipped this for a £100 profit. Today just picked up a Manfrotto Element MII for £100 today which is just the right size, and effectively free :)

Feel a lot better having my FX30 rig sat on it than my tiny Sirui travel tripod.

I was always told that a 24-70 is the ideal do-it-all lens but I could never get on with any that I had. It somehow felt more restrictive than having a 35 or 50 prime on there - I know that doesn't make any sense...

I picked this up today - an almost like new Canon Elan 7NE which is the US version of the EOS 30V, the last 35mm film camera produced by Canon. It looks like it has never been out of the box! I used to have a load of EF lenses (17-40, 70-200, 100-400, 85) which I sold about 15 years ago and I'm kicking myself for not holding on to them.

That's the thing. There are specific sitatuations where the 24-70 is ideal - weddings spring to mind when you're wandering around taking candids so need the flexibility of a zoom but also the subject isolation and low-light ability of f/2.8 (and can't afford or lift the 28-70 f/2 lol).

Outside of these few specific situations though, the 24-105 is a better "do it all" lens IMO.

My next investment should be in a better potato to take pics of proper gear.

How much is a role of these nowdays?
£25 from Bristol cameras. It’s very difficult to get a hold of outside Japan as Fuji have either stopped or significantly reduced production.

Compared to Kodak Ektachrome which goes for £30, and almost always needs some sort of warming filter, I’ve always preferred Fuji positives. If only they had Provia.

I have a couple of rolls in the freezer left from like 2002...I might use one in HK next month.

Might be worth shooting one as a test roll before you go. I've had some crazy colour shifts on expired slide film once it gets to the wrong side of 20 years gone.

It will be part of the fun, i will have it alongside my X100VI. Let's hope I don't drop my FM2 like I did with the OM2 like last time!

Was just flicking through my prints from a roll of Velvia I shot in Macau years ago, nothing quite like it.

My basic rule was to always make sure the sun is behind you, to get the best from it, bring out all the colours from the reflected sunlight. Even more so now it costs silly money!

Or i might use Provia, I think i have 1 of those left.

I might see if HK have any film stock when I go, perhaps I'll do 1 expired roll in the 1st half of the trip a new roll in the 2nd half.
