Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Same issue on some of the 718 cars (same mounts, I think?) with the PADM system. They are pricey to replace but you can just code them out if you didn't want to pay the exuberant amount to replace.

When they fail, my understanding is they do so in a way which makes the chassis and car feel a little firmer.

On the 981 I can’t think of a reason why you’d want it, and it’ll save you money as well as it’s seen as a “must have” option

Yep, they fail in the firm position to my knowledge. On my 718 GT4, there's so much other stiffness, it's hard to tell if there's any significant difference from the adaptive gearbox mounts being set firm.

No issues like this on the 987, though. I would pick the 987 route for the theatrics and event of driving. But they are starting to show their age now, so things like coffin arms and the likes will inevitably need changing. Then the age means they're harder to remove... you can crack the subframe if you juice it too much. The 987 and 981 both have their compromises against one another.

excellent info, thanks. Quick query though. Are PADM and PASM the same thing? They seem to be but just checking

FWIW there’s supposedly a new PADM revision from later 992 which is now ‘fixed’ so should last longer than 5 minutes like the old ones.
Whether that’s true or not who knows, we’ll find out in the coming months/years.

Alternatively just get fixed replacements and code them out.

How did you find Pembrey?
Really good. I've been thinking whether I like it more than Combe. Pembrey is perhaps more "interesting" with the hairpin and the flowing corners. They changed the layout to the Sprint circuit in the afternoon which I tihnk I liked more.

I'm going with Cup2 on the OE wheels. I need to find out why the tyres on my car were letting go - pressure issues, me not knowing the track, the geo setup. Probably all 3. :)

I think I'm going to go with getting a set of 19" Apex and put PS4s on them. Keep the OE wheels and Cup2 for track. Also means if we go to Germany and the weather is bad, I have a safer option to put on.

For the benefit of anyone reading, just to remove any ambiguity: the mid engined cars have PADM but it's just the gearbox mounts. The engine mount is static. The engine is mounted the other way around in the rear engined cars with adaptive engine mounts and a static gearbox mount.

It's the same two adaptive mounts in the same position on the chassis in mid and rear engined cars, but they are connected to different parts of the drivetrain depending upon mid or rear engined.

In terms of replacement, changing them on the mid engined cars is a doddle compared to the rear engined cars as there is significantly better access. The main issue is the cost of the part. The OEM replacements are ludicrously expensive.

Excellent! I should really try and get a day booked in there in the car. Agreed, I do enjoy the flow of Pembrey as it builds through each corner until the hairpin at the end of the straight, where you reset and start again. It's a very 0-100-0 track per lap.

Have you checked your top mount positions? I kept feeling this weird twitching on left turn ins. My car had an alignment before it was sold to me, allegedly, but the one top mount was a solid cm away from where the other was. I put the offending side in line with the other and presto.

I would definitely opt for PS4S over Cup 2 for any kind of non-dry weather. The Cup 2 do grip just enough in the wet but you will be completely restrained from having any real fun. PS4S are undoubtedly the right choice.

That is gorgeous, the colour scheme works incredible well, plus it's a nice change from resale guards/silver/black.

Look forward to more pics and your driving impressions :D

Too early for driving impression, just had time to bring her home today, but a quick stop for some snaps (although she is a dark green, the pictures and my lack of photo skills make it almost black) Forest Green is the paint code.

I was checking my discs and pads following the first track day outing and noticed this

There's like a dent in both sides of the disc. What are your thoughts - concern or not to worry. Annoying as I've not taken the wheels off since purchase and haven't noticed this before.

Actually, as you were, I think it might be for balancing :o

Hairline cracks around the drilled holes are the main thing to look out for. They look fine to me.

Thanks both.

I asked a trusted mech what his verdict was. Discs are fine, pads and tyres have one track day left in them then time for change. Will coincide nicely with first Ring trip of the year. Will switch to Cup2s and see after the next run whether to stick with OE pads or go to Pagid RSL29. If I'm not getting fade then stick to OE and change fluids.

Recommend changing to PFC/Giro discs etc. is you're gonna do pads anyway. The stock discs will be dead after 5-10 track days and they're not cheap. Better to replace them now and put them on the shelf for sale time.

Mines going in for discs and pads tomorrow. Looked at Oe, Sebro Oem, pfcv3/331 and ebc 2 piece w/ blues. Ended up with the ebc option. Definitely most bang for the buck, 1/3 cheaper than pfc and they don’t rattle; literary less than half Porsche oe parts.

Had pfc331 with standard discs and they just destroyed them tbh. Dust was crazy too

Nice I will be interested how they hold up, EBC only just appeared as an option in the last year or 2 on the GT4 I think. Certainly good value if they can last like PFC.

Put the R8 into body shop couple weeks ago as the aluminium panels developed some cauliflower, the rear arch was bad spotted it when I purchased it along with some on lower doors. So it was always on the to do list and as my various road trips had caused the bonnet to get peppered in stone chips I decided it was time to get entire car sorted.

Due to the corrosion resulted in it not been a simple a few hundred quid fix but as it’s someone I trust who has a great reputation I coughed up the £2500 which did include new rear hand brake pads.

Absolutely chuffed looks like a brand new just delivered car and was worth it with it been such a rare spec R8 been an Audi Exclusive with Wingbaxks and manual.

Car is now living in garage not moving for a month. I’ll do a single pass light polish to bonnet and it’s then on to have PPF on the bonnet to lock in that goodness as the R8 is very prone to stone chips as I must have added 100’s in my ownership alone so now it’s perfect I want to try and keep it that way so PPF makes sense especially as the bonnet on these is such a large one piece clam shell style affair.

Definetely a keeper me thinks and the first big bill in my 18 months ownership as been zero reliability issues. :)

Has anyone attempted to retrofit wireless charging on the 987.2 caymans?

I’m waiting to get one of those aliexpress head unit with reverse camera. Seems like a simple usb wireless pad in the armrest/under the headunit will do just fine?

Yes, but check the voltage and amperage supplied by the port are sufficient or you will end up with slow charging.
