What film did you watch last night?

The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)

I remember watching this back in the VHS days and thinking at the time it was a bit meh. A rewatch last night hasn't really changed my opinion. There's a few good lines of dialogue that made me laugh and the stunt work is impressive. Other than that it's just a bit lame and Geena Davis is definitely a miscast in my opinion, the advantages of being married to the director I guess? Who's best film is still Cliffhanger by a mile.

Loved this movie when it first came out, watched it over and over - and thought Geena Davis was awesome in this, super hot too.

The Amateur (2025) - 6/10

A serviceable espionage drama let down by unbalanced pacing and a contrived plot. The story is slow for the majority of it but it holds your interest as it goes through the motions and builds up activity steadily.

The actors fit their roles perfectly and the main character’s abilities are used to good effect but some side stories don’t go anywhere and there seemed to be too many coincidences rather than a crafted design.

The overall style is unglamorous and the few action scenes are good enough but the final half feels rushed and ends up with everything being tidied up far too neatly.

Thanks for the summary and saving me the time and effort on this one!

Nobody (on Apple Store)

Bob Odenkirk plays a ‘regular Joe’ that’s ends up in a spiral of violence.

I applaud this film for its opening. No, really! You learn so much about him in a 10 second montage (shown, not told) that this should be the template for all character introductions where time is of the essence.

What a beautifully lean film. It’s around 90 minutes, pretty much zero fat.

It starts off played fairly straight, gets a little far fetched but by the end is unashamedly silly. It’s the kind of thing you might expect Jason Statham to star in, but Bob does pretty well.

Overall, a decent and fun ‘violent action flick’ that doesn’t overstay its welcome. A palette cleanser from more laboured efforts.

Blade Runner (1982)

I saw this twice in the 1990s as a teen and I couldn't really understand it with my hearing/visual loss and with no subtitles.

I saw it again tonight, aged 46 now, with subtitles. I understood it much better and thoroughly enjoyed it. Apart from the old style CRT screens and the year number of course, it has aged really well. The direction and editing made it feel like it's at least a 2010s-made film. The dark city art style reminded me of Midgar City in Final Fantasy VII and a lot of the product placements are still relevant - Coca Cola, Budweiser, Atari and so on. Maybe not TDK though! The score (music soundtracks) also holds up really well, again making it feel like a much more recent film. I liked the Rachael character the most and the only thing I now still wasn't unsure of is how the film ended. Deckard (the main Blade Runner / cop dude) drives off with Rachael in a car, so I presumed they moved somewhere more remote so for Rachael to live out the rest of her short life peacefully.

A good 8.5/10 from me.

I suppose her life expectancy at the end depends on which version you watch, or what you choose to believe.

As I recall it's either "Too bad she won't live" or the "No termination date" narration.

Mickey 17 - 6.0/10

Starts out well but drops off towards the end. Felt a bit like a long Black Mirror episode.

It loses half a point for Pattinson woeful American accent.

Con Mum - similar format to other recent 'got conned or murder' documentaries. In disbelief how you could throw it all away like that but decent enough watch - 6.5/10.

Troy - now and again I get the urge to watch a blockbuster, this time it was the Trojan war. Suggestions it was all bull and none of the characters even existed in real life but anyway.
I do recall enjoying this the first time round but now it just seems a bit bland and bit boring. Same old number they're still pumping out today , a la Gladiator 2.

Watched Bad Boys ride or die, pretty much what you expect from a Bad Boys film as they have the formula set by now.
Pretty good action scenes and the usual banter and if you like the other films in the series you'll like this one too.
6/10

This film was ok.

Stand out bit was the fight with Hector. Well choreographed fight that.
