Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

i like the qte combat. been a fan of turn based rpg's since ff7, though nothing has quite beaten that first playthrough though. Enjoying this for what it is, loving the ripped up paris world.

Really interesting to read the polarising opinions!

I don't understand the zeitgeist with this one. It seems like a very average game with poor combat to me? I don't even feel like the story is that good, unless you add the caveat that the story is good "for a video game", because we're used to some utter dross from the industry by now.

Well - he lied- it depends.

If you're going in expecting "the story is good "for a video game", because we're used to some utter dross from the industry by now." then you'll get that.

If not, de rien.

Enjoying this very much despite the qte stuff, stick it on story mode and it's trivial. Do think it needs a rebalance, normal should be between the current easy and hard settings.
Mechanically it's solid rather than amazing but it does very well with the arty farty and the feelz.
I like it a lot but I've always been a pretentious solo intercourse type.

Finished the game using WeMod (go back to work tomorrow) as I wasn't going to waste another 10 hours of my life just to get through the story because of the turn based combat. Wish it was a fully interactive experience as it would have worked well also in this game.

I guess not having to focus on those mechanics has allowed the game to get the reviews it has, as the art design is top notch.

Had a cool atmosphere and the world building was pretty amazing, story was a 7/10 though for me, but you are invested in seeing out the characters endings at least. And the characters you meet as the story progresses change the tone of different scenes, which is good.

First game I've actually played through to the end this year, so I guess I have to give it at least an 8/10 overall for keeping me gripped the whole time and wanting to finish it.

I also liked that I could just sprint everywhere non stop, no bs stamina mechanics... for a game where the unbelievable is happening, that's a nice change from many other games as well.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed as I can't find any info on this anywhere but the camera movement was not smooth to me and was really annoying me, panning the camera slowly and looking at anything other than the character using a controller looked jerky like its frameskipping.

I tried capping the framerate to 60 with RTSS and its completely smooth... tried 90 also smooth... uncapped its back to stuttery camera. So it seems when the GPU is fully loaded the camera will stutter.

Played the entire game panning on KB+M usually I find it's KB+M with the issues and not controllers, so that's a strange one.

Loving this so far although the parry and dodge do feel overturned.
The difference in the parry and block window between normal and easy is rather large. Normal feels rather difficult.

Edit. Loving this game too.

just made it to the gestral village !

Im playing it on normal currently, the window is tight but the attacks are well telegraphed so im not finding it too difficult to hit most of them. It seems to trivialise most fights. On a different note though the music is giving me heavy nier automata vibes.

I had oddly low framerates with my 4070 Super and 5800X3d which I initially assumed was Unreal engine playing jittery buggers. DLSS seemed to fix everything (or band-aided it, depending on your point of view) and now it's smooth as.

What a great game though, eh! Surprisingly, and consistently, maudlin with the odd punch of humour and light. Quite the rare treat these days.

Agree that the music in some locations has a strong nier vibe. There's other stuff as well but folk will come across that themselves.

What a cool game with a lot to admire im just not sure i will stick to the end as its not really my type of game but you never know.

I never really got into Persona, is this worth a purchase?
I’ve only played 5 royal. And enjoyed it a lot. Very stylish menus / UI, fantastic music (so good I have the ost), and excellent voice acting. Good set of characters too. Maybe read a review first though. It’s a very long game too btw.
