An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Loving the remaster. Finally achieving the immersion I wanted all those years ago in the original, back when 1680x1050 was the resolution to be playing at and there were tweak guides to try and hit a silky smooth 30-45 fps outdoors

I feel no need to mod the remaster either. The FOMO was extreme if you didn't spend hours painstakingly modding the original, and then there was a massive chance of it becoming a mess that crashes or performs poorly.

Really impressed with the image quality of FSR 3 in this game. Frame generation also works great: I'm definitely enjoying experiencing the world at 3840x1600 @ 120 fps+ outdoors. The janky performance seems to be limited to brief periods loading up new demanding areas when walking through a door, and then straightens out in 5-10 secs or so.

I tried a Reshade to get the OG colour palate back. Outdoors in daylight with blue skies and plenty of greenery looked great with it, but everywhere else, or in other weather, looked off / bad, so I reverted back to default. Quite happy to make that sacrifice and not meddle any further.

Image quality wise FSR3 sits between the stock DLSS implementation in the game and DLSS with latest model forced - unfortunately forcing latest DLSS version results in smearing under certain lighting conditions in the game despite overall looking way better than the older DLSS or FSR3.

There is a noticeable difference in smoothness though between the same framerate using FG under FSR and DLSS - once you are above 120 FPS with FG using DLSS the game is very very smooth outside of the occasional transition stutters, while with FSR you can still feel micro stutters.

EDIT: Though forcing the latest DLSS + ray reconstruction, etc. with the updated engine.ini tweaks massively improves the image stability/smearing on latest DLSS profile at a slight performance penalty.

Thankfully I'm not seeing the FG microstutter you describe on my 7900 XT @ >120 fps. I've no idea about DLSS personally, I'm just glad FSR 3 has a clean image without the horrible fizzling / loss of detail it seems to have in nearly every other game I've tried it.

oh god i updated my drivers earlier for the 7800xt to play the new doom and it crapped my oblivion up on game pass, managed to find and back up the save points which thankfully i never needed and told game pass to verify and repair then it started to work like normal, the loading screens were hitching like hell and massive stutter once loaded, thankfully back to been super fluid :)

Weirdly I had a similar experience earlier - randomly out of the blue my Oblivion **** the bed, from super smooth with just the odd transition stutter to choppy and struggling to stream in assets - I'm still not sure what caused it:

I just had an *interesting* experience - I'm not sure if actually driver related or what. Quit out of Oblivion Remaster to do some stuff and notice the nV App pop up the little thing to indicate a driver update available (though I didn't take much note of it at the time) went back to Oblivion and performance was terrible - loading into an area and I'd see ~20 FPS for 2-3 seconds (when before it would be 70-80 for 1 second then straight to ~140) and for around 10 seconds higher quality assets were streaming in (when before it would happen pretty much instantly) and even when that had stabilised it was choppy moving about even with a good frame rate, etc. - went through everything forced shaders recompile, reset game/tried older save, reinstalled the nVidia drivers, uninstalled a Windows update which had been applied earlier today, etc. etc. nothing was fixing it, performance in other games was a bit choppy as well though benchmarks seemed fine, then tried the latest drivers, which (and a first for me - though I know other people have been having it with 4000 and 5000 series cards) got stuck on a black screen mid way through and I had to download the drivers from the website to update properly, and then performance was back to before in Oblivion.

Weird.

So far not seeing any issues or lower performance with the 576.40 driver aside from the black screen problem when updating.

think it needed its shaders to redo shader stuff but thankfully what i done sorted it and back to normal after updating my drivers earlier.

even the sound was pausing and starting on the loading screen, some kind of jerkfest which persisted when it was loaded

I've always had the music sporadically stutter on the loading screens if longer than a few seconds - I seem to remember the original game did that as well so assumed it was just the game.

ah i only had that earlier and its all smooth again, it was like it kept pausing and the loading icon would pause as well then the audio stutter would start :)

Yikes! Cheers for the heads up. I'm still on February's drivers, so will stick with those.

Loving this game, only 13hrs in so far so just scratched the surface really, been doing the thieves guild quests along with the main story, did play the original years ago but didnt sink much time into it.

This is one of, if not the best remaster done to date for me, it is actually running pretty good as well for me on my modest setup, im using new model dlss in nvidia app, frame gen and set to quality
everything on high settings including hardware ray tracing and dosnt really drop below 80fps anywhere for me, seems smooth as silk apart from the usual unreal 5 stutters at times.

Like someone said on the thread previous, i see no need to mod this game graphically etc, it looks great and plays great, just wish i didnt keep getting arrested all the time hahahahaaa

Did you pick up the leisure suit from the start of the game? It's next to book titles "Sierra"

If not you can't continue past a certain point you'll die and have to start from the very beginning, you can't go back as it's locked.

Is that for the thieves guild quests? or in general? im not sure if i did lol i cant remember picking it up anyway, dont tell me i have to start all over again lol

There is a lot of ways it is a very good remaster but they really could have put some effort into a few areas - while I actually prefer they've not patched out all the glitches, etc. there are some long standing common mission progression bugs, etc. which really should have been fixed, inventory management and 1-2 things like that really should have been updated - probably should have made spell quick slots as well instead of having to select the spell then press the button to cast.

There are so many times I both appreciate the visual upgrade but at the same time feel like it was the game I played all those years ago - they've done a great job in keeping it true to the original while reinterpreting the original art - not just a generic "upscale" of the assets. While there was likely a certain amount of AI involved the people who did the upgrade of the assets did a phenomenal job - some of the best detailed and attention to detail assets in a game to date just a shame they aren't shown off to their best due to the hazy, dull, flat lighting.

Aside from the faces LOL they sure do make em ugly in Cyrodiil.

I tried to recapture the magic of Oblivion during COVID, using a recent guide and recommended mods for the hardware of the time. I was on a 2700X + 5700 XT, which would be phenomenally more powerful than systems back in OG Oblivion days.

After getting through the tutorial and stepping in to the open world, I was forced to conclude my heavily modified game (especially for improved visuals) looked like ass. Also found myself in situations where I'd be getting an unplayable 12 fps or so in open world combat, with mega stutters, despite GPU and CPU utilization being almost nothing.

This remaster is an infinitely better experience :)

Any word on upcoming patches? Are they properly implementing HDR?

Stutter fix patches badly needed. Usual UE5 nonsense.

Regarding HDR, I very much doubt it which also sucks. The best solution currently is to use RenoDX (HDR mod for loads of games now) or RTX HDR. RenoDX is absolutely awesome, especially if you like to fine tune your games visuals, and are accustomed to Reshade etc. It's basically better than most game's native HDR.

Seem to have pretty much given up on the game...

Compare how many patches per week we were getting with Baldurs Gate 3..

Got your money, and ran off with it
they can have a share of my gamepass money if they want but their sharing it with doom this month, i reckon a outright price of 25 quid would be fair.

i wouldnt of payed full whack for it though but im really enjoying it, just about to enter the shivering isles proper and still using umbra but i have other magic weapons stored away which umbra could power :)

just glad my performance seems to still be back to normal after doing a verify and fix on the game files with the game pass version which left my savepoints alone and apparently fallout 3 is next for the same treatment :)
