EV general discussion

Well i'm officially an EV owner now. Picked up the MG4 X Power this morning. Didn’t properly put it through its paces on the way home, but still gave it the beans a couple of times :D. It doesn’t fail to put a smile on your face when you go full throttle. It is very silly.

Achieved 3.4 miles per kwh on the drive home which was half 70 dual carriageway and half mixed A/B roads, and with AC on full blast. That doesn’t seem too bad to be honest.

I’m booked in next month to get an Ohme Pro charger installed. The Granny lead does the job but it’s very slow. Will be able to then activate one of the EV tariffs too which is 1/4 the price.

Just had the conversation over lunch with someone with nothing but the usual FUD about EVs. I told them I am buying a used EV. They were immediately on the “you’d need to be a mug for buying a used EV, when the battery fails it’s a total write off”.

I explained the used EV I am buying will come with a battery health check and 14 months warranty left. I also pointed out that EVs have cell packs that can be swapped out in the event of a failure and that owning now 4 and coming up 5 EVs I have never had a battery fail.

I also suggested they speak to another one of our colleagues who had a battery cell replaced in their I-Pace under warranty and it was no worse than any other warranty repair.

Next myth was the usual “they won’t go far and take hours to charge up”. Nope, I said… this used EV if it has a decent battery health check will do 300 summer miles and 250 in winter. It will also charge up an extra 200 miles in 30 minutes. And that is considered slow for many modern EVs.

Thankfully they had the sense to admit they were obviously were getting bad info.

I bet a lot of people that complain about EV range go on long trips about once or twice a year too. Discounting a car because the one time you do a longer journey every year you might have to stop for 30 mins seems silly.

I totally get that for some people an EV won't work (regular really long trips and no convenient way to charge it either end etc), but I bet for a lot of people it would actually be more convenient.

I’ve said it to people before, if they added up all the time they spent going to, or at the fuel pump every week because of the day to day travel, it would greatly outweigh the additional charge time on the odd long trip.

What made you settle on that in the end? :)

Honestly, the hilarious amount of power and the price. I also didn't think it was as bad around corners/twisty b roads as some of the motoring press make out. Yes, you can feel the weight so it's not quite as pointy and responsive as other hot hatches I've had, but it's still quite fun to drive. Kind of reminds me of a dsg Golf R to drive, but even faster!.

Nothing else comes close price/performance wise, and I actually think the MG4, especially with the Xpower wheels and trim looks quite nice.

We have a Kia Sportage as a family car/got long trips. I just wanted something fun to drive to work and back that could still be relatively practical if required.

Is it orange ? but agree mg4 shape looks nice & distinctive;

No, it's the metallic grey!

Bit boring, but makes it a bit of a sleeper car and won't attract as much attention!

Looks smart/more grown up though and the orange caliper covers give it a slight sporty splash of colour!

Quick question on EV chargers. Can I set it to charge to %80 and stop ? Apparently that is best but I don’t think my car supports it or I cannot find it. I’m getting the Ohme Pro charger fitted next month by Octupus so hoping I can tell the charger to stop when it gets to %80…

Thanks

It must be there somewhere in the menus - I don’t think anyone would design an electric car without giving a maximum charge selection. Our two in the household (polestar and EQC) also allow you to vary the AC current limit too

Will have a better look later it is quite basic though.
