EV general discussion

You need to get your head examined if you think somehow buying a Tesla means you suddenly subscribe to Musks views and actions.

Do you honestly think people actually pay attention to this stuff outside of the small minority of politically engaged people who comment on it? Yes he is a grade A plum (forum appropriate language) but you actually need to pay attention to know why.

At the end of the day it’s only going to be awkward if you make it awkward and your neighbour hasn’t suddenly turned into a right wing Nazi sympathiser if they buy a Tesla.

I see you dodged the China question also.

P.S. a used Tesla isn’t even ‘cheap’, they depreciate at a similar rate to other EVs similar EVs.

I used my Leaf's satnav for the first time yesterday and unlike any other satnav I have used when you are coming up to a junction the screen splits in two with one half showing a close up of the junction cleary showing you which way to go as well as another screen opening up on the speedo screen with clear instructions not that it's needed as the voice is clear and detailed anyway. Also went down a road that had recently been resurfaced and was as smooth as a billiard table (extremely rare up here), no road noise at all from the tyres, the silence was weird while doing 60mph!!

I'm jealous! My 2015 Leaf's sat nav hasn't been updated since 2015 I think! It is basically useless. The Leaf is a great car to drive though very quiet, smooth and easy to drive. The only downsides I have found are the front suspension is made from chocolate and the brakes don't get used enough unless you drive the car hard regularly and end up rusting and causing issues. Parking brake cables also seize up which are a pain. Cheap to buy and generally cheap to run, comfortable, quiet and way faster than most equivalent ICE cars at the lights.

They are cheap for a reason.

Yeah people can buy what they like but if you buy a Tesla used or new in 2025, many people are going to think you are OK with Musk's views and actions. I personally don't think picking up a used Tesla at a discount would be worth the possibility that people might think I support Musk and his far right ideology. If a new Tesla shows up on my neighbours drive soon I will 100% think less of them. There are countless other cars they could have chosen. I will still be nice to them but my opinion of them will suffer.

It's going to be awkward as well when we meet on the shared driveway. If it was any other car I would have shown a genuine interest but if it is a Tesla I either have to show fake enthusiasm or be rude. It is actually inconsiderate to your neighbours to buy a Tesla putting them in an awkward situation unless of course they too are into the whole rightwing Nazi thing!

I'm not sure if this post is supposed to be satirical?

That's like suggesting someone buying a VW is a neo-nazi because the company was started by Hitler....

I hear the sat nav in Teslas is ok... maybe you could have a look at one of those ;) :p

more seriously speaking..... i think going forward now for me any car i buy will have to have android auto. The fees involved to keep branded sat navs up to date is just silly (iirc its around £100 a year for my ipace and it wasnt a million miles off that for my nissan QQ - tho i got a hookie update off ebay for 1/3 of that)

where as android auto has uptodate roads, live traffic updates and in general just works IME, and its all free. My ipace has wireless android auto but it did not work for some reason with my old phone, but its been a total game changer with my new phone.

Never heard something so ridiculous. It’s a car and he probably doesn’t associate it to a view. Not sure why you are for something that has a minimal impact on your life

If you see someone wearing a fur coat in public you are automatically going to think they are a censored word. It's the same thing for me as seeing someone buying a Tesla in 2025. If you are going to buy a Tesla you should be under no illusion that people will judge you negatively for buying a Tesla and who can blame them.

I too would not buy a Chinese car because I am aware of the links between the Chinese government, the human rights violations and the Chinese car companies. I think people can be forgiven for not knowing about those issues though when buying a Chinese car. You would have to follow world affairs fairly closely. Hell you might not even know you are buying a Chinese car. Some people might believe that MG is still British. I just had a look online for other Chinese owned car manufacturers and was surprised to find Volvo, Polestar and Lotus on the list. I bet 99% of people would not know they are Chinese owned.

I find it very unlikely you can buy a Tesla without prior knowledge that Elon Musk is a large share holder, Chief Executive Officer and frontman for Tesla considering he controls the worlds most popular social media platform, is the (on paper) world's richest man and is in bed with Trump. (Nearly) Everyone know's who and what Elon is. Ignorance is no excuse for the vast majority of people so the only other options are indifference to his politics, agreement with them or just a general lack of morals.

Now I am sure someone will come back at me with the usual "you won't be buying any more cheap Chinese goods then since you are so morally superior". I will say that it is almost impossible to exist in 2025 without buying things made in China but I do make a conscious effort to buy things made in places other than China where possible. It is probably impossible to buy a car in 2025 without some Chinese components in them. So the alternative would be to walk everywhere. So what I am saying is not buying Chinese in 2025 is extremely difficult.

Not buying a car made by a almost universally known right wing, election interfering, Russian supporting ****, very easy. And that is why it is very easy for me to judge those who do badly.

Charged my Evoque at Tesla Supercharger V4 in Leicester yesterday, the Tesla app lost connection with the unit so it was a free charge. Confused the natives but CCS is handy. Maxed out about 34kW i think.

So possibly the byd seal is an alternative for the bmw i4 having looked at the specs, it has the shape I prefer and perhaps less controversial but obviously I've yet to drive one. Although I'm getting insurance quotes coming in from the compare the market at £100 more than the 2gc m235i was. Why is the seal a more expensive car to insure, I can see the differences in the insurance groups, m235i 36, seal 48 and the i4 38. What is causing this difference, is it just because the manufacturer is Chinese?

BYD don't offer any insurance themselves ? like I thought tesla had done when the insurance companies were afraid with little data on liability&repair costs.

Tesla hasn’t offered insurance in the U.K. and probably won’t. They once had an agreement with direct line which was akin to a referral but ironically, approaching direct line through their normal sales channel normally resulted in a lower price.

Insurance offered by car manufacturers is typically them reselling a ‘real’ insurance companies product with the manufacturers name on top and not actually something they ‘run’ themselves.

It’s a bit like how you can buy your electricity from Sainsbury’s but really you are buying your energy from Eon, supported by Eon staff and systems. The only difference is you get nectar points and the logo on the website is different.

Thanks for your replies, £100 extra isn't really an issue as we're going from running a two car budget to one. The cost is offset by the cheaper seal as well..

Just charged up at one of my local charge stations. Thought it was ironic that the chargers are powered by a diesel generator that fires up when you start charging with a nice puff of black smoke…….lol

Which charging station was that then? Is it a new install?
