Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Just got to end of Act 1 and the game is still gripping me

I find the combat enjoyable and it's such a quick game to boot up and play for 10-20 mins (have been really busy with work)

I just spent 20 minutes fighting Renoir and I am realizing that the combat is an extremely boring one trick pony, and the game is 95% combat, and I am starting to really loathe the idea of playing 20 more hours to get to the end.

But of course, I already spent 15 hours of my life on it and being the sucker for sunk cost fallacy that I am, I will continue...and hate both myself and the game for it.

This story better be worth it..

Noooo :-( but you loved kcd2.. I would have thought you’d have liked this.

Very different games, KCD2 has large focus on immersion, simulated world, wide breadth of game mechanics, nonlinear quests, fully voiced interactive dialogue system etc
Exp33 is linear, mostly rocky corridors, no game mechanics aside from static combat and character building (which is also only about combat).
I generally prefer WRPGs over JRPGs and this game (and this comparison) only reinforced that for me. Of course, to each their own, yadda yadda.
I am not saying this is a bad game, for its genre it is good I am sure, cutscenes are well done, but tbh for me it is not enough. But as I said, I will keep playing..for now.

Fair play lad. Honestly. I love both. We NEED more Henry in our lives. He is such a great character. When he says “you what ??” It reminds me of someone I met from Manchester along time ago :D

I fired this up last night around 9pm only really intending to do the intro area and a little bit afterwards, I didn't put my controller down until after 2am.

Absolutely loving it so far, the parry/dodge mechanic I'm so-so on but everything else is fantastic. I love the art design, the characters feel compelling, there's enough intrigue regarding the story to draw me in which I hope doesn't change. The music I'm especially loving, the piano themes while you explore really help to set the tone.

It feels very much like a love letter to JRPG's, but with the very rare more mature theme. As much as I love those games, they're almost all surrounding teens or early 20 somethings and are often heavy on the angst you'd expect with the demographic. The last game of this type that I remember having an older and more serious cast is Lost Odyssey which launched way back on the Xbox 360 and unfortunately was never ported elsewhere, although it's a fantastic game. There was a western release of one of the Nier games which was altered to be similar, but it was more of a coat of paint over the game as the actual Japanese release featured a young teenaged kid rather than an embittered middle aged man.

The above aside, it's more or less what I was expecting as a fan of these types of games. I do feel the hype train has dragged a few people along for the ride and can totally see why it might not be the right flavour of tea for many.

I'm off out to hit the gym and do some shopping now, but I'll be counting the hours until I get home and can play more, and as a life long (I'm currently 40) gamer that's an exceedingly rare feeling for me these days.

Finally got round to playing this and am surprised I'm actually enjoying it even with the dodge and parry mechanics. Skipped the tough dude in the first zone but went back after a bit and beat him, pretty pleased with myself.

Edit
I do think they could do a better job of explaining things. It's all pretty confusing to start with and I still have no idea what the 10k+ (is it chroma in the top right) is for.

I agree with this. For the first few hours I was getting a bit annoyed with the whole thing and came close to giving up a few times.

I'm still not absolutely over the moon with it, but I am actually enjoying it now. The combat is bothering me less often and the music & story are really nice.

It's just money.

But what it is from lore standpoint? No idea. Characters keep talking about it, but never actually explain it.
There are lot of made up terms that characters know what they mean, but you just have to guess/infer. It is annoying; I dislike this mismatch between what I know and what the characters I control know. Game needed some kind of codex that would elaborate on its universe.

Over 4 hours in and it became apparent. Codex would be a welcome addition. Did over 6 hours yesterday and completed the 2nd zone. What's not apparent is whether I should explore some other places before following objectives. I found a zone which doesn't say danger so currently in there but no idea if I'm going to have to do it again as part of main quest. I am really enjoying it though.

Those zones which are marked as "danger" are all optional boss encounters ( usually with a "chromatic" prefix ).

I assumed i was too low for the ones which said danger so found one that didn't which wasn't my objective. My point is it's not clear at all whether I should follow objectives around or get sidetracked in other zones.

I'd let the game lead you by the nose through the story. You can take a peak at the other stuff, some is quick and easy, but a lot of it is intended to be end game content. About 30 hours worth according to the devs. I'm at level 80ish and mopping up the last few zones.

Going exploring is up to you. It doesn't affect the main story.

Portal colours:
  • Red - you are not strong enough for the enemies inside.
  • Yellow - you are strong enough to tackle.
  • Blue - you are overleveled for the area, or there are no enemies there.

It's a combination of both things : optional content & you're too low level. Non optional content scales to your level.
