An Elder Scrolls: Oblivion thead

Sounds like it is a bit quirky. I've never bothered with any of the Shivering Isles stuff yet.

For a change I've been role playing an Auroran setup though you can't get the armour in the game without mods so the Elven stuff is the closest and I've had to make 1-2 tweaks to the spells/enchantments to make it work better.

it was running fine on release, then i loaded it up yesterday and was constantly stuttering. Every time i moved the mouse, the whole game would stagger like hell. Game pass version

Something strange is going on with performance in the game, I was running it absolutely fine from release up until a few days ago when out of the blue performance became severely degraded, after a lot of messing about I got it mostly back to where it was but still seeing 2-3 seconds after loading where details are streaming in which wasn't happening before and intermittently stutter which again wasn't happening before.

I can only put it down to either something odd with Windows updates, something odd with nVidia driver updates or the game having some kind of online/DRM/telemetry component.

Rather embarrassing that a game first released almost two decades ago, wipes the floor with these so called triple A games.

Does it? I just wonder if you take out Nostalgia out of the equation, how good would the game be if it was released today for the first time?

Would probably get quite a bit of stick for the dated inventory mechanics, mission progression bugs and the amount of time you have to resort to Google unless you are truly hardcore into this kind of game and happy to spend hours by trial and error to work simple things out. Performance is also a mixed story.

On the other hand it does mostly work, has a ton of effort put into the assets upgrade (shame the lighting doesn't show them off to their best), they've streamlined some mechanics but sadly not done a full overhaul, lots of stuff to do and you can easily spend hours getting into it.

Personally I've spent more time with it, despite having played it extensively on release, than any of the recent releases and found it more enjoyable than most games released recently - but I do have the previous experience to overcome some of the areas it falls short.

Exact same for me, and it can't be a Nvidia issue as I'm using a 7900XT

This is the weird thing for me - probably coincidence but mine the performance went to **** about the same time as the nvidia system tray flagged a new driver release (though I didn't make any connection at that point) and after a lot of messing about has mostly gone back to how it was after updating the GPU driver but something still isn't quite 100%.

The only other change to my system was the Windows update KB5058411 but uninstalling that didn't fix it and it is now back on my system without the same impact. Something kind of weird is going on.

Do you have Corsair iCue running?

Have to say I really appreciate the effort they put into trees in this game - so many games they don't stand up well at all when you get close. Sure there are some instances of disconnected bits but overall they've put some effort into them.

Found these pics of my peak OG Oblivion, modded to the hilt, on a top monitor for the time (I distinctly remember it cost me £220 from PC World in 2006)

So I've just found a change to the game from the original. My character has done none of the MQ since leaving the dungeon, but on the road to Bravil I found an Oblivion Gate. Went in, shut it - everything inside exactly as normal. But in the original game the random gates did not appear until you asked Martin to come with you from Kvatch.

Surprised no patches have come out for this yet.
I still get random ctd's when entering doors or going through menu items on the steam version.

Only the Cursed Mine and Rockmilk Cave are somewhat regularly CTDing for me and those are long standing bugs they really should have sorted before release. Moving items between containers is buggy (with random duplication) but is usually stable for one way moves if you open and close the inventory between moves in the opposite direction - I've not personally had any other menu related crashes.
