What film did you watch last night?

The Thing (1982) - 10/10.
(4K Blu-ray)

Not often I give this kind of score, but I absolutely loved it. Brilliant special effects, tightly storied, the acting, score and setting, everything. I can see why it’s a cult classic. And also I see why there’s lots of articles lately about lighting in films and how poor modern ones are in implementing it correctly. This was a great example of it done right and enhancing sequences. It really worked and added to the scenes, particularly in the outdoors segments and the generator sections.

I can’t believe I’d put off watching this for literal decades after having seen a clip when I was a kid and it scaring the crap out of me. :D

I need to watch more John Carpenter films.
Cigarette Burns are an absolute must then.

It is a shorter film but well worth every minute and just so deliciously unique.

Alien 3 (1992)

Just the standard edition, I've never seen the extended one, frustratingly.

It's been a good many years since I seen this, I hate to say it, but kinda forgot how poor this one is in comparison, considering Aliens is easy in my top 5 all time movies, and the first one was pretty decent as well.

5/10

There's a fan made restoration and re-edit that's available. Haven't had chance to watch it yet, but I've downloaded and still seeding it.

Once Upon A Time in The West. 4K looked amazing with the Bronson/Fonda eyes extreme close up scenes at the end.

Companion 8.5/10

Didn't watch the trailer or know anything about it apart from it has young Nat from Yellowjackets and Quaid jr. Really great 90 minute movie. Bit sci-fi, bit black comedy. I think it's quite low budget, so was surprised that the story is really good.

2 films in 2 days, without watching the trailer. Not something I normally do, usually only if I really like the actor and/or I have nothing else to watch and feel like taking a punt. Fountain of Youth was a real stinker, but Companion restored my faith!

Insidious: The Red Door

3/10 Just didn't really go anywhere or tread any new ground. Stuck it out but won't likely ever watch again.

Kung Fury (2015)

What can I say, ultra cheesed up fake 80'd nostalgia, with Kung Fu and Nazis.

"Your mustache is ****" lolololol.

Please don't go through life without seeing this at least once, it's only 30 minutes.

8/10

The Brutalist (2024)

The first half of this 200 odd minute film is actually quite engaging, but the second half seems to drag on without really going anywhere.

It's also similar to Tár (2022) in that you expect it be based on a true story, when it's not. This seems to take something away from what you've just watched and makes you feel a bit cheated.

Equally it's such a well made and well acted film, that it's hard to criticise. Either way, I doubt I'll ever watch it again, like so many other award laden films I've endured in the past.

6/10

Fountain of Youth - Guy Ritchie Movie.

Was a good adventure movie. Lots of action & the story was OK

Would recommend - 7/10

Worst part - Natalie Portman was a pain in the A$$ all the way through. Moan Moan Moan. She's looking rough these days too.

The Phoenician Scheme - saw this in an almost empty screen last night, I loved it but I think Wes Anderson is getting more Wes Andersony so new comers would be very confused! 4/5

I felt very old when I read that the main actress is Kate Winslet’s daughter!

Taffin (1988) small Irish movie starring Pierce Brosnan as a local debt enforcer who ends up in a fight with a large developer over the building of a chemical factory in a small Irish village.

I was not aware of the meme popularised by Adam and Joe, but am aware now as I came across a remix video by Noiselund using the scene which A&J got lots mirth from.

Basically Pierce Brosnan dials it up to 11 when he's shouting at his co lead. It's definitely a so bad it's good kinda movie. In fairness, Ireland looks beautiful and bucolic/pastoral. Watch out for father Ted and Father Todd Unctuous.

Brosnan's accent drifts in and out of Oirish and then mumbles/marble mouthed when he shouts

7/10 but for silliness

watched Havoc on netflix.
Was hoping for something up to the quality of the Raid movies but alas this is not it.
Apart from the nightclub scene it was pretty meh and the cgi was distracting a lot of the time.
5\10

Rewatched The Force Awakens for the first time since the cinema.

It's so much worse the second time round, you can see through it so much. Rey able to block ren out/control the storm trooper, fight off Ren in a light sabre duel with no training is just ridiculous.

Leia and Solo's acting just seemed so wooden and the one liners just awful. 3/10.
