Play For Dream MR

Depends how good they are.
From what I am reading on the PFD Discord, owners are very happy with them so far. It's not perfect, but the flaws are very liveable.

-OLED 4k screens, the same BOE ones as MeganeX.
-Lenses are good, but not great. Quest 3 (unsurprisingly) has better edge to edge clarity.
-Wifi7 + Wifi6E MLO 320hz supported.
-Headset comfort is apparently fine HOWEVER it was not designed for the western faces so they are designing a new facial interface for the western market.
-Tracking (inside out) is accurate and controllers have good battery life. Weirdly though the grip trigger is not capacitive and is a regular click button.
-Eye tracking is present for VR chat and future dynamic foveated rendering.
-Headset battery life is tolerable, but as always use external battery packs.
-Android-based so apps can be ported to it.
-Now has VD support so can play Meta PCLINK titles, woohoo!

I will get mine in a week or two and really looking forward to playing games with those juicy OLED blacks.

That's disappointing about the grip trigger. I didn't like the PSVR2's grip button. Didn't feel right to have a digital click rather than analog.

Still it's better than the awful Index grip sensors.

I've read that at the moment VD renders games/apps at the same res as the Q3on the PFD MR due to the chipset on the PFD MR not being powerful enough to encode a 4K display, IDK how true that is. Hope it's not true.

The resolution can likely be increased a little but yeah the chipset is definitely a limiting factor.

This is not a headset if you want true 4k gaming visuals you will need to buy a DP headset for that because no wireless device can do it.

ALVR is a competing streaming app and you can increase the resolution beyond VD.

I guess in time then something similar to QGO or QGO itself could overclock the chipset like it does for Q3/Q2/Pro to give it more oomph.

Still the lack of SDE and the OLED colours would make this far more appealing than the Q3 even at the same render resolution. I play Skyrim VR on the Pro instead of Q3 simply because the colours and contrast are so much better, even though it's slightly lower resolution.

Yeah, its just a HEAVY price to pay, the PFD is basically 3-4x the price of a Quest 3. You are basically getting worse lenses but with far better panels due to OLED. However, the effective resolution while PCVR gaming will be around 3k-ish due to the encoding limitations of the Snapdragon chipset it uses. I guess 2027 is when we will see VR headsets with chipsets powerful enough to stream 4k wireless.

This is literally the only modern OLED wireless PCVR headset and you certainly pay a premium for it.

Apparently a firmware update released yesterday dramatically improves both FOV and controller tracking. With a well fitting gasket FOV is now around 110 degrees, which is similar to the PSVR2. round 80% binocular overlap too.

Controller tracking is now reportedly far more accurate with fine-control games, especially when hands go out of the usual ranges (behind the head etc).

Annoyingly I have not had an order update since ordering a week ago, so I hope I hear something soon because I am getting a bit of VR withdrawal from not being able to properly use my Quest Pro since weeks. :(.

Well holy crap... just heard on the grapevine that the latest build of VD has been specifically tweaked for the PFD and now runs at a mind-boggling 3840x3552 at 600MB and only 44ms latency!

I will wait for further testing from people and of course Youtubers will be doing some videos soon, but if this is really true then we are in a new era of wireless streaming fidelity. :D

My app TykeAI works on the Play For Dream MR :D

Looks like I will be ordering one! I want to see my app run at the resolution it is capable of, 4K, because that is what it runs on the Quest 3 but obviously the Q3 can't display that, I bet it looks really good on it (it looks great on the Q3 even if I do say so myself) but with 4K panels and OLED.....made up :)

The Monster mode cannot come soon enough to general release. The headset has a lot of potential but the resolution is definitely a problem at the moment, as is the limited 72hz at full 4k resolution.

The headset has a lot of potential but I advise anyone considering it to wait a month or so until the new version of VD is released and I will soon post some more detailed thoughts.

Mine was shipped from China yesterday, ordered 9th June, shipped by 13th June, afaik it should be here within a week or 2. I'm really looking forward to it, Richdog has made me lower my expectations somewhat which is probably a good thing, the lenses aren't as good as the Pro's or Q3's (tbf no-ones lenses are as good as these I think).

Yes, and even the lenses between individual Quest Pro and Quest 3 headsets differ. My first Quest Pro had perfectly clear lenses edge to edge. My second had a bit of distortion at the edges. The Q3 lenses aren't as clear edge to edge as the Pro.

doesn't look like option for grips
Alyx footage i didnt think was great, but might have been panels
Mic is bad
Yes the funny thing with that review is that the guy was apparently not even using the new monster resolution mode that is coming to virtual desktop in July. So what he was calling a very clear and high resolution image was actually running at quest 3 settings on the play for dream which means in reality it's a low resolution and not very clear. So basically he does not have a good eye for detail there.

You can improve godlike resolution on the play for dream significantly by using steam super sampling and especially if you have a 5090 the impact is actually quite low in many games if you put it 400 to 600 percent and the image improves massively.

If you get into the sweet spot of the headset the glare is visible but actually very minimal during gaming and the overall image is good. Many quest Pro lenses have horrible browning at the outer edges and the local dimming zones were very few so you had horrible blooming in many games, so in the end it's just a question of what floors you are willing to tolerate and what impact they have on the overall image. Also the lack of SDE on the play for dream is also a huge improvement over the quest Pro where you could see tons of SDE and individual pixels. The play for dream has such great fill fact that you just cannot see any individual pixels whatsoever.

So in summary I would say that when the monster resolution comes to VD things will improve a lot for this headset. The main limitation for me is the fact that full 4K resolution on the OS is limited to 72 HZ with no 90 HZ mode which means that you can only ever play at 72 HZ maximum in virtual desktop. Play for dream are working on seeing if they can implement 80 HZ mode which would be a huge improvement. Sadly it does not seem like the Snapdragon is powerful enough to power the headset at 4K 90hz.
