EV general discussion

True and the infotainment stuff you are really only going to find out for yourself as it can be very personal preference. One persons ‘fine’ is another persons laggy mess, I tend to be in the latter camp.

You can usually find good information on charging curves online these days. jpaul’s favourite Norwegian YouTuber will have probably done a video on it before cars land in our market, although generally I am more interested in performance in less than ideal conditions.

True on the infotainment. I spent more time messing with the UI on the 2023 and 2024 Borns than I did test driving them. :)

My conclusion was both are poor but not terrible. But I can understand why someone who is used to a slicker easier laid out Google based (or Tesla) system would rule a Born out of their life.

I think the fact I was used to an I-Pace with Pivi Pro set a very low bar for me ;)

Item #13453 on the list of things jpaul needs to check on all the cars he's never going to buy - "Does it have a time settable cabin preconditioning function?"

taking the first response
why is this an EV question? Can you remotely defrost your ICE car in the same circumstances.
basic requiremement for this brave new world - I know my parents would love it (wouldn't ever drive off with a partially defrosted rear screen),
anecdotal conversation I'd had with a new female eMokka owner at the dealer, that was her careabout/love (women had had a concern on lengthy charges - not sure if that is still an inhibitor)
puma-e - per fords pedigree seems to have heated/wired front screen which would help defrost too.

No as the app doesn't use wifi to talke to the car - it uses Mobile Data. Who are you even asking here anyway.

JUST SET A TIMER..

Some EVs will allow you to pre-condition via the key fob

The timer one is an interesting one - not everyone needs pre-conditioning every day, do any cars allow you to upload a calendar and pre-condition based on events?

My ev remote app interview question remains - could I remotely defrost the Ev in the poor mobile signal bermuda triangle I live in, most can't be woken via wireless.
(contrived workarounds of waking the car by initiating a charge seem only work arounds). Equally having an ev charger that exclusively uses mobile signal(ohme)would also be out.

I had thought that .. so it seems autotrader adds are missing a trick in not itemizing it.

Maybe but thats more hassle than using the timer in advance of leaving your house. Proper toasty is probably starting conditioning before you wake up.

I think thats probably okay for jpaul, probably has a 15 minute chat with his spoon every morning working out which cereal not to eat.

As per my edit, that only really works if you use the car to a strict schedule. Being able to turn it on remotely means looking out of the window, seeing it's frosty and pushing the button on my fob while drinking my coffee, vs needing to go out to the car and set the timer.

To be fair you don’t set the timer on the morning of the drive, but you can set it before getting out of the car the previous day.

Or you setup a schedule saying Monday to Friday at a certain time. So every day your car is warmed up.

Though this would only be if you are in a terrible WiFi area.

I can set a weekly schedule which is also location based so if the car isn’t at home it will not precondition.

That said, i rarely actually do it and tend to be when it’s frosty out or I need the full range of the car. The heating kicks in so quickly, the rest of the time it doesn’t really make that much difference to comfort.

Yeah Born was poor but fine once you get the hang of it and know where the 3-5 most used settings live. That's after they updated the software to remove the 'new settings are available, do you want to apply them now' popup that used to come up every minute - that truly was dire :D

I rented a Polestar 2 in Italy and it wasn't great either for someone unfamiliar with where anything was. Almost every system has a learning curve and once you know it and the workarounds most are livable with.

My old Renault credit card keyfob had a defrost button, none of the EVs I've had since have though. That was actually a very a useful thing to have and much quicker than an app, but only really at home when you are close to your car. If you are on a day out and want the aircon to cool the cabin before you go home on a hot summers' day then the app is better.

Having to constantly fiddle about in the car menu to set timers in advance sounds like a lot more hassle than pushing a button on a fob/app 10-15 minutes before you leave (or just integrating it with your google calendar) :p

Again, only works if you need it to a set schedule every week

Yes, the Zoe had both, which was great :)

I currently use HA to pre-condition my e-Niro, based on outside temperature and a combination of school and bank holiday calendars, supplemented by the app for more spontaneous journeys

indirectly that could work - leaving time is predictable for me (not the retired parents) once the car woke to heat I would then be able to disable heat if it wasn't frosty.
(it's a better solution than my spoof charge to wake it up)

Though this would only be if you are in a terrible WiFi area.
Mobile signal area , you mean ? most ev's won't wake on wifi events, and need mobile, which is my gripe.

infotainment : if the infotainment/music sounds good (speakers&amp) then if you are using spotify via car-play, then native infotainment is less important ,
a native spotify app on android-automotive with an e-sim, where you could also use a voip app for better quality calls would be nice though.

It does, but my car has a setting to prompt when you turn of the car to ask if you want to set preconditioning... also can set the schedules on the app too for when you aren't in the ass end of no where .. or jpauls empty cereal bowl location.
