5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

A 3090, which is a little noisy also but I power limit it away.

Truth be told, I’ve been enjoying playing on my Switch during this ‘downtime’… old N64 games, actually. Isn’t it nice to just play something fun that ‘just works’ without it causing a racket / nuisance? Ahhh :)

But tinkering and playing around has its own fun… I haven’t been able to resist speccing up my own custom water loop. I’m a sucker for punishment, I guess :p
Got to respect, that's what it all about playing games you enjoy. As much as I love tinkering about it takes me back to the days when things were much simpler before I had to tinker and test everything I get.

I have been tinkering and learning about vsoc voltages and doing memory tinkering. And as much as have been tinkering and testing did it help me with League of legends? Hell no I still suck ballz from when I was on 12900k, 8700k and setups from 15 years ago. Graphics cards be damned. 1080ti, 3090ti ,4090, 5090 they still can't help me with ARAM.

F you Viego!!!!

:P

Happy to report after several months my 5090FE has completely shut up and stopped being dramatic.

Either that or I've gone more deaf.
So I reported last month that my 5090 FE had no coil whine, and that remains true until I get to a high fps (heard it the other playing a game at 250+ fps). However it blends in with fan noise somewhat. It does not trouble me however, that's years of what gaming laptops sounding like jet engines does to you.

My 5090 Waterforce WB was awful, now with a 5090 FE and its bad, but not as bad. Undervolting helps for sure.

I wondered if anyone could shed some light however. 4k ultra settings capped to 165fps on both Borderlands 3 and Cyberpunk as an example. Cyberpunk was drawing significantly more power i.e 520w (340w with undervolt), whereas BL3 was at 340w (240w with undervolt) and the coil whine was noticeably worse on Bl3. I would have expected the opposite. Framerate was solid 165 and 1% lows were roughly the same.

Both games use Direct X12 too. Any thoughts?

Is it definitely the 5090 and not the PSU? Really does seem like a lottery on the 5090's?

Without testing 10 different PSUs, I would say its the GPU - using a Corsair RM1000x and the unit itself is inaudible. Swapped out for a fractal unit and same noise/frequency etc. I had heard that the FEs had coil whine but my Aorus card was much worse. I could try getting a 1200w PSU and see if that reduces anything but I'm not sure its worth it!

It's certainly not an exact science as can be seen from this thread.
I have the Waterforce AIO, essentially the same card and an Asus 1200w PSU and motherboard. I can't hear coil whine from it.

think I lucked out. Caved in and picked up a 5090 tuf. It makes pretty much no noise in quite bios mode with an undervolt, it's lower noise than the 4090 suprim x running in quite bois mode.
it can spike to 500w but usually in the 350-460 range depending on game or workload so barely anymore than the 4090 as well

If I put my ear right up to it then there's a tiny amount of electronic noise but at 1m away with an open case I can't here it

That's interesting to hear, especially as its likely the same PCB. One of my thoughts was that with the waterblock version not getting over 40 celsius in my setup, there was no opportunity for heat cycling which reportedly aids reducing coil whine.

I guess the next step would be to try a 1200w PSU and see if that makes any difference. Or some kind of UPS/line filtering device.

Oh, actually, didn't think of that. I have a UPS. Thought 3 other 5090s I had did gave some coil whine in any case. Suppose if a 1200w PSU makes no difference, you can return it...
Regular gaming at 55ish Celsius at low fan speed, not sure if that helps or not.

Hi,

After my previous bad experience with Zotac's RTX 4090 (mainly due to noisy fans), I decided to give Zotac another try. This time, the fans were surprisingly good – very quiet and efficient. However, the coil whine on this new card is the worst I’ve encountered so far.

I then ordered two more cards from different brands for comparison. The best among them is clearly the GIGABYTE AORUS RTX 5080 Master.

Initially, I tried the Zotac card, followed by the INNO3D GeForce RTX 5080 X3 OC. The INNO3D performs well overall, and the coil whine is noticeably better than Zotac's. However, the fans are louder, and if you connect a third or fourth monitor, the card constantly spins the fans at the minimum fan speed (30%), which I personally find too loud and annoying. Especially when you are doing work

Now, with the Gigabyte AORUS RTX 5080 Master installed, I’m finally satisfied. It has the least coil whine, is extremely quiet even under load, and performs exactly as expected – a dream! The only downsides: it's the largest (but not the heaviest) card of the three and also the most expensive.

I also weighed all three cards, and the results support why the INNO3D runs slightly louder and ramps up its fans earlier (even in idle, and at low temperatures) - something the other 2 cards are not doing.

Hello, I'm back with the news. I had bought a 5090 Aorus Master which had this noise of fan which stop. I bought it on February 2. I sent the card back to the retailer on 03 May who found the fault. He exchanged it for the same model, and the new one doesn't make that noise at all. I think that the first series of graphics cards had this problem, and that another revision has been released to correct it.

Happy to report that one morning, and literally an overnight change there was significantly reduced coil whine. This was extremely loud before, and now its only audible if case side panel is off with head relatively close. No change to power supply, settings etc. Very strange.

Fresh 5090 MSI Suprim Liquid. Just stressed her a little bit with furmark and The last of us part 2 and I'm pleased to say she doesn't squeal at all. I can't hear a thing coming from it. Be quiet Silent Base 802 case and Dark Power 13 PSU.

Good stuff. Defo reports of some whine reducing over time.

Hey, guys! What do you think about AIO GPU's? Reliability? Pump lifespan, coolant degradation, etc?
I am deciding between MSI SUPRIM Liquid and AORUS Master Xtreme Waterforce.
Which one would you go for?

I went for Aorus. Good price plus 4 year warranty...

I’m also leaning toward the AORUS — it probably has less coil whine than the MSI SUPRIM Liquid, even though the SUPRIM is likely better built.
Coil whine, it's certainly low to a point I haven't noticed it. The main thing was pump noise. I tried 3 Astral LC but all too loud when system wasn't gaming. The Aorus is audible but acceptably quiet imo.

How do you mean audible? Pump or coil ?
