EV general discussion

I guess the 11kW vs 22kW thing is probably down to the simple fact 11kW is cheaper and easier to provide, people aren't typically expecting to fast charge from such chargers (if they want that, then 50kW+ DC is usually available anyway) so why bother with the added expense on either side of the equation for a relatively niche use case?

It only unravels a little when you get the combo of an 11kW charger and a car without 11kW capability - judging by the available filters on EV Database, the vast majority of EV models do actually seem to be 11kW (or better) compatible, accounting for 893 models of the 978 they have on their list.

It's showing me 590, and of those how many have it as standard vs an option the buyer needs to select?

What was the situation? I thought they weren’t UK road legal?
On a work trip in the US at the moment.

Kind of gutted as I wanted to drive something 'American' while here but also wanted maximum convenience so went with National's "Emerald Aisle" pick any car you like setup. There was ONE US car, some naff looking mini van thing. I was kind of hoping a Dodge Charger Hemi would have ended up parked in the wrong place :p

Thanks, I'm going to charge over the 3 pin but with the car connected and charging the smart meter is supposed to be able to detect it, is that right?
Also, does anyone know if the large block that is on the 3 pin adaptor cable is waterproof?

I don't think it will work with the 3 pin but if you're on iGo you'll get 11:30pm to 5:30am.
Perhaps somebody will correct me on that.

When I used my 3 pin I put it in a box and at the car end I still have a magnetic cover, people say you don't need one but hey ho for £5 it makes me happy.

I'm not using the official BMW 3 pin charger, but if i use the Ring Automotive one i have it doesn't detect my car, however the Ohme charger detects it and the Octopus app also now detects the car when plugged into the wall charger (i5) whereas before i did it all through the charger. I've ended up just staying with the charger controlling the overnight charging anyway, rather than direct connect to the car, just didn't want the trial/error of using the direct to car option.

The large block on my 3 pin charger isn't waterproof. I'd suggest looking at the specs of your specific charger to see if it has an IP67/68 rating.

Yeah plan to look at the label on it after doing some goggling about it. It may well state a rating..

So even with the granny charger the octopus app links to the bmw app then sets up the charging schedule which can be seen in both apps.
So will check to see what has occurred tomorrow morning.
Love these challenges...

Ace things, also the LWB extra impressive for space and simple versitility in my view.

OK not EVs but when you compare to something like the Vito L1 or Elgrand, etc. they appear to be so much more versatile and make better use of space - as above I don't have real world experience of the Buzz to compare but I've enough experience of these kind of vehicles in general to have a good guess.

Well, it looks hilarious.

I thought so at first, but to be honest it's kind of growing on me. I quite like the 2-tone white/dark blue one!

Ridiculously overpriced though, I specced up a LWB one the other day; lowest trim level, only additional option was the 2 tone paint... £64k!

The PV5 is literally half that (for the SR version)!

So approved used ID Buzz are dropping below £40k, the missus is considering chopping in the Discovery 5 for something a bit more economical now we don't have any farming duties to worry about (we've got some real big bills coming up for it so looking at all options). Basically she asked me to look at something EV that has a similar footprint or a little smaller compared to the Disco to see what the options are. She quite likes the look of the Buzz (as do I strangely). But I've never driven one nor been in one yet.

How soon are you thinking? Maybe worth waiting for the PV5 to be released, as I wouldn't be surprised if the price of used Buzz drops somewhat
