What film did you watch last night?

Jurassic World: Rebirth 6.5/10

Much like the others, not a great story but big dinosaurs eating folk who are too stupid to survive and fighting other dinosaurs. A lot of fun, plus Scarlet Johanson is a great reason to watch.
Was it better than the second one? I turned it off within minutes of trying to watch it. SJ sweating in a jungle is tempting though

Terminator Salvation (2009) - 5 out of 10

The thing I don't understand about the "Hollywood" movie system is, if you want to reboot something like Terminator and make it into a franchise so that you can start printing money... why choose such a shallow, bland, uninteresting, forgettable script with so little humanity, and then choose a director whose entire track record in feature films up until that point, was two crappy Charlie's Angels films and a mediocre sports movie?

Not that I'm placing all the blame on the director's shoulders. Making a $200,000,000 clunker of a movie like this, takes a village.

The one thing I would like to compliment about the film though, is the use of practical effects for some of the humanoid Terminators (T600?). The shots that were done by a big bloke in a terminator suit, look really good. They have a grounded physicality that non of the VFX in the film have. I also think that Anton Yelchin's performance was the only one that stood out for me. Not by much but it's still noteworthy given just how rubbish the script is.

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) - 5/10

An OK movie which rehashes a lot of the ideas and scenes from the earlier films but with a slightly darker and quirkier tone.

The inclusion of the civilian family was annoying but they do get some good escape scenes as do the mercenary team in their formulaic storyline.

The dinosaur special effects, balance of action and plot is ok but for every good scene there was a weak one.

The acting’s good enough, there’s plenty of nods to the franchise and the theme music is used superbly in one scene but overall, it was too much of a mixed bag.

Heads of State, inoffensive comedy with the classic trope of 2 mismatch people needing to work together to overcome something. Entertaining enough but not something you would watch again.

6/10

Pig - 7/10.

I never knew I needed a truffle farming, master chef’ing, fight club patron Nicholas Cage film in my life, but now I have it whether I like it or not! Topped off by a turn from a villainous ex-Chicago Hope doctor.

I actually enjoyed it quite a lot! :)

The Minecraft movie - 6/10

Predictable, simplistic family movie.

That said really enjoyed watching it with the kids, cheered me up no end after a challenging week.

F1 The Movie

Having been an F1 fan for decades, I thought it was worth going out of our way to catch this one, even if I wasn't expecting all that much from it. I was pleasantly surprised, it's a solid summer blockbuster. It has fun characters, funny bits of dialogue, great music, and it looks good. Pitt's character is too old for any of this to be realistic, although they do a great job of showing how his character contributes through things other than outright speed, and it's not really any less realistic than Hollywood normal and probably more realistic than Top Gun: Maverick and it didn't stop that being great. The mixture of real F1 and the fictional story is kind of fascinating, you can see real events from the season mixed with their cars, which is both grounding and confusing for the film. It plays plenty of homage to real details of F1, although aficionados will notice several places the rules don't work like that, and Sony Hayes is an appallingly dirty driver who I'm pretty sure would have been banned by season's end. The accidents are also both more frequent and more dramatic than the ones in real F1 - but it's a film, of course, it isn't bang on realistic: most Hollywood films are taking more liberties than this. It's hardly stacked with surprises, but it delivers predictable beats in slightly unpredictable ways and doesn't outstay its welcome despite a two and a half hour run time.

8/10 Switch off your brain and enjoy the show.

Warfare - Decent, fairly short, a good recounting of the incident from those involved. Felt a little bit like someone's "pet project" - easy watch for saturday night.

6.5/10

Thunderbolts - 5/10. Decidedly average. Watchable but not very exciting.

Heads of State - 6/10. Mildly entertaining switch your brain off fare with a bit of humour.
