What film did you watch last night?

John Carter - haven't seen this in a while but all I can say is thoroughly enjoyed it. Forgot how brilliant the story was and good performances from Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Defoe and Sam Morton. Still baffled how it bombed and they never made a follow up. The ending was clever but a bit rushed. Would have loved to see him return to Barsoom. 8/10.

Huge budget and very poor to non existent marketing, nobody knew what the hell it was supposed to be about.

I honestly wonder if the naming had something to do with it too, it's a rather generic name for the protagonist and doesn't say much about what things are supposed to be about. Slapping "Mars" on the end would have likely went a long way all by itself, but expecting a 100 + year old obscure sci-fantasy series to do well without some leg work was lunacy on behalf of the studio.

I do agree that it was an enjoyable watch and find it a shame we never saw more.

Think your absolutely right. Those that were familiar with the original literature might have thought it didn't do it justice but for me i found it thoroughly entertaining because I knew next to nothing about it and didn't even realise there were books and further adventures with Barsoom. Just hope someone in the future would pick this up and explore the other stories.

Watched The Old Guard 2, decent enough but nothing spectacular.
Its better than i remember the first being although its been ages since i watched that.
6/10

Yeah fair result.. Wasn't comparable to the first but still good for a once off but not nearly as bad as some made out.

F1 7/10
(mainly Brad pitt)
I enjoyed this movie, and so did my mum
I'm not into F1 any more but i used to be back in the day, enoughto recognise, that everything in the film is at least plausable
this could very easily have been a straight forward predictable, medium>medium>soft tyre movie, but it was more like a paced medium>hard>medium tyre affair, so yeah, it was actually quite long at 2h 35m, but it was never boring, with enough humour to take the edge off things, the imax did not dissapoint, good size, good sound, perfect for a movie like this
Looks like we have some sorted films to go see next, mum fancies jurrassic park, and I do too, after seeing the trailers, fantasic four loooks to be a good movie, ooo, female silver surfer oO and ofc we will be seeing superman when it comes out, it's also going to be the 40th anniversery of the goonies, so that is going to be on at odeon at some point too
finally strange new worlds season 3 will be out soon, so I'm totally sorted I'm half way through a voyager rewatch(again), on our new OLED TV while I've been waiting for ST:SNW

To be fair I've never watched it proper, just seen bits of it when other people have watched it, but in my opinion you have to be into a specific kind of fantasy to really enjoy the movie, for my tastes its a bit too silly.

Ballerina. 3/10

Far too dull. Even the action was meh. The JW films have worn this path out. And personally I only like the first JW.

Here (2024)

A film were the camera never moves and the story follows the lives multiple people who live on the land or the house that was built on it.

I've never a seen a film shot in the same way, so I suppose it gets some kudos for that. The main problem is because everything happens into he middle distance, you don't feel as connected to the characters.

The digital aging and de-aging is pretty good. There's a few funny moments and there's some dinosaurs at the very beginning. Still doesn't add up to much, but still reasonably watchable.

5/10

The film originally was going to be called John Carter of Mars. And then studio suits got involved  From TV Tropes:

TV Tropes said:
The film was titled John Carter of Mars at first, but the "Mars" was dropped as Disney thought it was the reason Mars Needs Moms did so poorly at the box office, leaving the film with a nondescript name as the title. The fact that the film even takes place on Mars was downplayed in marketing, along with any mention of creator Edgar Rice Burroughs. The studio also refused to use the book's title A Princess of Mars, fearing it would make the movie sound like a chick flick. As many critics pointed out, they exchanged a title that appealed only to women for a title that appealed to literally no one. And who knows why they didn't just opt for an Indiana Jones-style combination of the titles, and thus form John Carter and the Princess of Mars?

It's a shame, as it's not a bad film. But various behind-the-scenes decisions absolutely buried it.

The Killer (2024).

Remake of the 1990s John Woo Hong Kong gangster shooter, but set in Paris and the The Killer is female this time.

It passes the time, but doesn’t really do anything new with the story apart from having Eric Cantona being a French Ray Winstone.

5/10.

I really liked it as well.

It was a victim of poor marketing, bad timing (Dark Knight rises and The Avengers came out that summer?) and a story that jumped about a bit too much for some.

The Killing of a Sacred Dear (2017)

Another weird film from director Yorgos Lanthimos, at the end you question why you finished it, yet it was strangely compelling.

Strange acting styles, almost stilted and monotone delivery from most of the main cast. Inappropriate dialogue. Odd lens choices and camera angles. Obscure soundtrack.

Add all that up and it's almost unwatchable, like many of his films. Yet he gets you to watch to the end without feeling like you wasted your time.

X-√6+Y/π/10
It's one of my favourite films!! Lol!

Its always the same, they make a good movie and the studio execs interfering with it. Karl Urban's Dredd and other movies comes to mind. Princess of Mars or John Carter of Mars would have made a big difference.

I really doubt the title made that much of a difference. I have seen it, I remember it being painfully average and nothing else has really stuck about it. I've looked at reading the books before but they get pretty mixed reviews, not sure they've aged well.

When it first came out it was indeed called, John Carter of Mars as I went to an early screening and that was its title. I think in certain markets it was not changed to John Carter.

John Carter was just a bad film. iirc meant to be the start of series of films and never made it past the 1st one! Fancy special effects but very confusing story imo. I just checked and it is still on D+, might give it a second watch someday. Also, was never a fan of this Taylor Kitsch, who seemed to be the flavour of the month around then!

Watched 2 very different films lately.
Standing On The Shoulders Of Kitties, spin off film of the Trailer Park Boys, not sure how they got Billy Bob Thornton in on this but fair play, its got a few funny moments but lacks the presence from Julian & Ricky that you get with the TV series and the story aint all that good, Randys gut is still a sight to behold :D
The Phoenician Scheme - One of the better Wes films of late, certainly more enjoyable than Asteroid City and the French Dispatch

Jurassic World: Rebirth 6.5/10

Much like the others, not a great story but big dinosaurs eating folk who are too stupid to survive and fighting other dinosaurs. A lot of fun, plus Scarlet Johanson is a great reason to watch.
