I don't really see how anything would spoil the originals, they don't stop existing.
Star Wars was dead before the sequels though, they weren't making it any more. How did it affect the success of the franchise? Indiana Jones also is barely an ongoing story, they're pretty self contained. I just don't get it, do you sit down and watch Alien and think "man I would really be enjoying this but Alien Resurrection is terrible"While it cant change the content of original movie itself, it can mar the overall story or universe it has established. Making a bad sequel for the sake of it can definitely impact the success of a franchise or history of that story. Star Wars sequels is a perfect example.
