What film did you watch last night?

The Surfer, low budget Nicholas Cage film, not his best not his worst, the premise behind the main plot driver is a bit of a tough one to accept, probably would have been more believable if it was set in some backwater US Town. But seeing past that it had its moments and i was genuinely interested to see where the plot was going. At 1h40 there's far worse ways to waste time.

New releases online!

Megan and Megan 2
Liked Megan for what it was, 2nd one I feel was better as long as you don't think about it too much. 6/10 for both

How to train your dragon (live action)
Love the original, one of my favourite franchises.
This was very faithful to the source material pretty much a one to one recreation apart from a few small details and the misunderstood small dragon scene being cut which was a pretty important scene.
It didn't need made but I'm glad it exists it's nice seeing it in this format. 8/10

My only gripe is the twins (ruffnut specifically), they didn't even try to get 2 people who somewhat look alike. Ruins the dynamic.
Astrid is also the stereotypical Scandinavian blonde beauty, who just so happens to be a bad ass. They didn't need to race swap her when everyone else looks (bar a few) similar to the original. Yeah she's mixed blah blah and vikings where not all white blah blah, still a deliberate change that doesn't match the source.
The actresses where fine but they didn't need to change them.

I'm glad I made a second attempt to watch Strange Darling after reading comments about it above.
I don't know why, but for some reason, I wasn't able to get into it during the first viewing.

Anyway, this time I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written and executed (no pun intended).
Me and the wife tried this earlier, gave up in the chapter with the old couple. Didn't like the disjointed chapters, don't think it added anything and just found the whole thing a bit poor from acting through to the story.

F1 3/10

Oh dear, what a complete turd.

Pitt and Bardem were great (as they usually are) and the opening (pre title credits) race got the film off to a good start and I was thinking there was potential for some sort of Top Gun Maverick but with cars, but alas following that it was all downhill. I just didn’t care about the characters or the story and the whole thing just felt like one big puff piece for Liberty Media and a large dose of back slapping for the various personalities involved in the sport.

Shame, as I’ve liked everything Joseph Kosinski has directed up to now, all his films have at least had some immense set pieces, but this was just flat and dull, after that opener.

Probably worth mentioning at this point that I’ve been watching F1 for decades, admittedly, most of the last 10 years have just been one of the highlight shows, which I’ve found myself fast forwarding through more and more – mainly to stay awake… ;) I wasn’t convinced it was possible to make an exciting film about a sport that, with the best will in the world, isn’t exactly wall to wall action, often very far from it in fact.

watched Brick on netflix.
A couple wake up to find their building has been walled in and they have to try and escape.
An interesting premise but it was pretty slow and just felt a bit silly by the end.
5\10

Bring Her Back 8/10

Damn good but a little gruesome lol, actually had to look away from the screen at one scene! Clearly a couple of directors to keep an eye on if you like horror films.

Watched I am Rage on prime.
British take on a most dangerous game / hard target kinda film.
Some dodgy acting but the female lead is good and the film overall is solid.
6.5/10

God Bless America..
"How can you have a civilisation, when no one is civilised anymore"
cracking little film, and more relevant now than ever, even thought it was made 14 years ago.
8/10

Blazing Saddles
Very funny and very much not PC, but in the right way.
9/10

Terminator Salvation (2009) - 5 out of 10
Yea I have a soft spot for this movie because a lot of it is good, but a lot of it is also rubbish.

I love the bits at the start where they are fighting the not so smart terminators, there are parts of it though that are really good.

It got silly at the end though.

I reckon 5/10 is fair.

Redline - Sci Fi Fuel driven intergalactic super race for various champions qualified throughout the galaxy. Its an anime movie from 2009 with often sublime art which still holds up today. It actually puts some modern animation movies to shame in comparison imo. The story is intriguing but a bit simplistic If you like racing and dont mind it framed in the Anime medium, its highly recommended. 7/10.

Wicked

Was actually pleasantly surprised. A pretty good film adaptation. Worked well as a film, although Erivo isn't as good as Menzel unfortunately (in terms of vocals). She wasn't bad by any means though, and acted it well.

Ariana Grande was good, but her eating disorder was distracting at times.

8/10

We Own The Night
9.5/10
HOW did I miss this years ago?
I'm not even going to justify this, just do your research, the casting alone and plot makes this a winner going in blind... Yes, just yes.

You Were Never Really Here
8/10
3rd rewatch...
Pheonix, yet again blows your mind, no surprise there, huh?
Just watch it, raw, savage, short and sweet.
