A bit of a film marathon yesterday.
Dr. No (1962)
I don't think I've ever seen this from start to finish before. It's ok, very much of its time in certain aspects, but no doubt very original for an audience back then. The basic elements of what a Bond film became are here. Particularly the theme and the opening gun barrel shot.
5/10 (by today's standards)
8/10 (for it's original audience or compared to films I've seen from a similar era)
From Russia with Love (1963)
The second Bond film and again I've never seen it from start to finish. Definitely better than the first one, but it still very dated. It's hard not to cringe at some of the dialogue, but I can appreciate it for other things it did, that would've wowed audiences back then. Helicopter shots and stunts, boat chases, explosions and fights on trains.
6/10 and 8.5/10 based on the same scoring above.
Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)
Same as the original, I've seen this loads of times and owned it on most formats. I actually think I prefer it to the original, it's a lot lighter in tone and had bigger action set pieces. Joe Pesci turns a double act in to a triple act and easily earned his place in the rest of the franchise. I think when I watched it for the first time I'd never seen a film open in such a big way before, it totally blew me away.
10/10
Boiler Room (2000)
Think of it like a low budget, more restrained version of the Wolf of Wall Street, even though it proceeded it. I have seen it once before and remember it was a decent film, a lot of faces that weren't as big at the time as they might be now. It even has Vin Diesel with hair.
