EV general discussion

I'm pleased I passed in Dec 1999, means I can't drive anything above 3.5T so I can't be asked by my employer to just jump into a 7 ton truck to do a delivery which, frankly, is absurd.

I was passenger to a guy who was asked to do exactly this and it was ******* scary despite him doing a very good job all things considered.

I have to say, that new MG does look very impressive for the money.
Good news.
You can now drive an ev up to 4.25T.
And here's a 500mile one for you, at 4.1T its solo driving i'm afraid.

Spent all night with the car (model Y, 39k, 2023 plate) discharged then on a battery test. Tesla says battery is at 96% (independent test pre purchase said 93%). Seems good to me

There is a thread for that:

They are 80% DoD so its really a 13kwh battery, still good value but you need your own inverter and an electrician who is willing to install it (you can do teh DC side yourelf) and A G98 or G99 from your DNO.

Is there a single app to cover most charging points, or do I need to install each one every time I want to use a different point?

I've currently got ZapMap & Pod Point, but if there's a way to access them without installing 300 different apps, I'd be grateful.

Electroverse covers a lot, and gives you a saving, though most should offer contactless by now

Yes and no.

You can get aggregators like Octopus Electroverse which cover lots of networks but not all of them.

However, they may not have the best price for that particular charger.

Nearly all rapid chargers will offer contactless but again that may not be the best price.

It's definitely a bit of a minefield. For example I've got electroverse installed and even with my Octopus discount the Shell chargers at my office are over 60p per kw, through the Shell recharge app 39p

If you go to Tesco and get San Miguell with a clubcard its cheaper than Co-op...

Same "minefields" have existed forever. Most people just get on with it.
Just a quick example that you can just get on with it a lot cheaper one way than the other which might not be entirely obvious to those of us not blessed with years of EV knowledge.

It's more like going to Tesco and paying twice the price if you use Visa rather than Mastercard.

Depends on when they got their license, folk mid 40+ probably have most on their license just off a standard car driving test, not sure when that changed, late 90s sometimes.

I seem to even have gained a motor cycle license on mine about 10 years ago.
Yeah it changed in 1997 so people 46+ if you passed your test asap when you were 17, but its getting less and less of the overall percentage of drivers.

Not sure on the age ranges but the kind of people who want to go off and do some van life stuff in a shonky converted ambulance might skew a bit younger which is where the issues arise.

Model 3 FSD vs Swindon magic roundabout easy work :p
If you dont want to click a daily fail link, the orinal source is here:

Also driving through central London here:

In any case, its elementary becuase this is no doubt cherry picked foottage (e.g. if it failed on a run they are not going to show that) and FSD isn't yet legal in the UK.

and how much did the tesla share price drop yesterday -
fsd is one area where BYD with their godseye lidar system &big R&D seems to trump tesla, unless tesla make a comeback with HD radar (tesla may live, or, die by unlocking this market)
The chinese consumer is beta testing the market here, but, maybe starmer will give us the opportunity to participate though sacrifice ourselves

Cool.

As a new EV driver all I can say is that the public charging situation is an utter disgrace and needs some seriously major coherent work to be remotely acceptable. It shouldn't be difficult but as an EV beginner I can't help but feel it's implementation is half-arsed at best, even in 2025; as if it's a token gesture and the powers-that-be are either waiting for something better to come along or hope it goes away. Or that it's some not-so-secret cabal and if you don't have the knowledge or a Tesla then good ******* luck to you.

So many charger location map apps have missing or incorrect tariff data so you install a few of them. They then report the wrong price, condition or occupancy status. Then when you get to a charger it's been tucked away as if to hide it's existence and you then have to install this app or that one, buy this tag or that one, spread your data wide and far and finally cross your fingers that the charger is actually working. Wait twice the charge time if someone else shares your charger because yet again, it's been designed and implemented poorly.

It's only been 2 days and 500 miles with an EV .

I was told that Scotland was leading the charge ( ) with their EV infrastructure but I don't see it, at least not in my little part of the Highlands. I'm waiting on a home charger to be installed so it's either wait over 40 hours for my granny to tinkle trickle or find a public charger.
So I leave home with 100 miles of range for a 40 mile round trip after prior planning to charge on the the way there or back by consulting the ZapMap app, the CarWow charger location website, input it into the car's satnav and install the Charge Place Scotland app, giving bank details and inside leg measurement. Remind myself that I'm just going out in my car, not invading another country. I get to the first charge location and the charger wants an RFID tag that I don't have. The Charge Place Scotland app doesn't load, just frozen despite closing the app and trying a few times. I move on. I stop at a Tesco where the charge bays are located at the back of the carpark right next to the trolley return shed, the one place in the entire carpark that everyone avoids parking their car. Follow the instructions - plug in, tap my credit card - payment type not accepted. I try another. Not accepted. Debit card - not accepted. It's either broken or I need another RFID tag. I move on. I stop at a car park nearby and locate the chargers again in the naughty (or junkie) corner and find three other vehicles waiting for two cars already suckling on the electric teats to have their fill. I move on, this time back home, defeated and a little bit more empty.

The Proclaimers walked 500 miles because they ******* had too.

It's now going to take my granny +45 hours to juice up instead of the promised 35 minutes. At least I'm only paying her 7p or 28p per kWh instead of the cartel price of 84p per kWh (admittedly a few penny less if you sign up/pay a monthly 'subscription'/shove a RFID up your bum/install more apps than you'll ever have kWh's).

My new EV is great and once the home charger is installed it'll be bliss but the supporting infrastructure at the moment is still woefully ****.

CPS is a shadow of what it used to be after then farmed the chargers back to the local councils to look after. Its the only network I'd 100% recommend an RFID for as well, as half of them end up not having a signal to phone home and start charges via the app etc. Was great in 2019/20, £20 bought you an RFID card and you got free electricity for 95% of the rapids, now I wouldn't trust them to even work, Scotland went backwards unfortunately.

As for your 3-pin dilemma, do you need to totally fill the battery - what range do you get on say 10%? Also it is quite amazing just how quickly you realise the car sits around doing SFA for 99% of it's life.

I would strongly recommend the Electroverse app and link it to your octopus account this then adds you charging to your home bills. You can find and filter fast chargers and see prices you’ll pay.

Not every brand etc uses it - but for the ease of use - I won’t use anything not on it.

It’s also got loads of European suppliers and was faultless on recent trips to France and Switzerland.
