What film did you watch last night?

Bring Her Back 8 / 10.

Don't watch loads of supernatural horrors these days and a bit squeamish in my old age.

Pretty grim and nasty, had to turn away a fair few times. Probably preferred Talk to Me but well worth a watch.

Minions (2015)

Watched this with the grandchildren this morning and although it received mixed to positive reviews and I've seen it before, I loved it. The Minions are so funny, the art style is very appealing and the voice acting is great too.

8/10

Vivarium 6/10
Not sure what I was expecting but it needed more.

Cosmos (2019, indie British film) 5/10.
Been on an indie SciFi run and this movie was well, just about watchable with some cringe dramatic photography shots and dialogue. Follows 3 men on a night out searching for radio signals and discovering something.

Calm With Horses
6/10

Some good bits in this for a budget, savage film.

Smokey And The Bandit
10/10

This doesn't require an explanation!

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - 8/10

Found it slightly better than Superman and most of the past few years of Marvel.

Happy they mostly skipped the origin story, effects were decent, acting was overall ok. The tone was good, not too goofy or too super serious.

Over the last few weeks I’ve made an effort to watch all 3 Terrifier movies. As I’m older now I must say I do struggle to watch gore/slashers films these days.

T1 - 6/10, thought was fairly okay, nothing groundbreaking etc. found the Art mannerism’s quite comical at times.
T2 - 5/10, thought this seemed to drag on a good 30 minutes too long, the brother was so annoying, and the story certainly went to new levels. But Art stole the show in every scene imo.
T3 - 5.5/10, again story just seems so out there to me, few scenes I did have to kinda turn away from mind. Art just gets better, the scene in the pub with Santa, brilliant!

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (on Shudder)

‘Deviant’ demons return to test a ‘first film survivor’.

First watch for me. Pretty fun! It’s very dated, which sometimes adds charm (earnest characters, corny dialogue and delivery) and at other times really doesn’t hold up so well (dreadful picture quality, “yikes they really milked that ‘endless corridor’ set :o”).

The premise is fab though, and the practical effects / monster designs are fabulous - in that ‘goofy horror’ sort of way. The sexual deviancy adds a bit of discomfort which offsets this goofiness quite well.

You know, I think I might actually prefer this to the original. It takes the premise and extends on it significantly, adding more surreal elements and a wider cast.

A film of its era but better than expected.

7/10

Melancholia 6/10

A lightly more sedate Lars von Trier film but yet another one which seems pointless. However, big cast and I thought the acting was superb from all involved. Interesting social dynamics and psychology at play and er it contains the end of the world.

Superman (2025) at the cinema, we took one of our grandchildren. It reminded me, the cost, why we do not often go these days.
Film : 7.5 out of 10.

Overall, we were all entertained. It showed a more human and vulnerable side to Superman, not just due to him getting severely kicked about for much of the film, but the turmoil of emotions he expressed. Personally, I am not sure if I enjoyed just how "mediocre" he seemed, compare to the other used meta-humans who helped him, being very much needed.
At least I now know whey he can fool people whilst wearing his disguise.......................hypno glasses....! :D

I like surreal humour. I like absurdist humour. Clearly I do not like cringe humour, and especially Tim Robinson's brand of cringe humour. :(

The new Jurassic movie. 4/10 (5 being average). It a movie but it didn't quite have the impact of the original. It's a film for a rainy day but not much more. The mrs was saying that Johansson is looking her age.. not that I was going to say anything.. she still looks good, the Mrs was clearly commenting on the fact she spends the majority of the movie in a tight top and booty hugging trousers but unlike other movies they either had her cast with giants or she's petite. Plot meh, some scares for the kids, but it's lacking in tension or excitement, Johansson looks like she's in robot mode and bored (did they write the script using AI?).

The screenplay was written by the same guy that did the screen play for the og Jurassic Park. And JP Lost World. He is apparently the fourth most successful screenwriter having written the screenplays for many big films.

I try not to compare the JW films to the classics, id only be disappointed if I did that. Just take them for what they are, a fun time with some dinos eating and chasing people. Great summer fodder.
