So after watching unbroken it reminded me of a film I hadn't watched for probably 15 years or more, so I had to re watch it.
I just did a search on reviews of it in this forum & incredibly there’s only 9, which I really don't understand.
No wonder it's been described as Spielbergs forgotten masterpiece.
Empire of the Sun.
Released in 1987, other than some of the classic music from his movies such as raiders, etc from that era & large explosions have moved on a bit.I can honestly say it could have been made now. It's aged very well imho.
The film centres around a young lad living in the dying throws of the colonial era in shanghai, played by a young Christian Bale.
After the attack on pearl harbour, all hell brakes loose & he gets separated from his family & ends up in a Japanese intern camp & the story follows him to the war end.
I think it's an excellent film. Clearly had a huge budget & is pretty unique in it's take on that era. Christian Bale is superb. John Malchovich plays a big part & is also very good. On re watching I realised a young Ben stiller is also in it in a small way.
Cinematography is fantastic. The P51 plane scene is up there with the best & you can tell the quality of it, being pre CGI.
It's not a gruesome film, but is pretty emotional, as your drawn along the harrowing road the young lad is thrown into, from being a cosseted rich kid, pre war.
If you haven't watched it. Please do so. I honestly think you won't be disappointed.
I think I'm going to have to give it a....
9/10.

Glad to see it's not terrible, the first is iconic.
