What film did you watch last night?

So after watching unbroken it reminded me of a film I hadn't watched for probably 15 years or more, so I had to re watch it.
I just did a search on reviews of it in this forum & incredibly there’s only 9, which I really don't understand.
No wonder it's been described as Spielbergs forgotten masterpiece.

Empire of the Sun.
Released in 1987, other than some of the classic music from his movies such as raiders, etc from that era & large explosions have moved on a bit.I can honestly say it could have been made now. It's aged very well imho.
The film centres around a young lad living in the dying throws of the colonial era in shanghai, played by a young Christian Bale.
After the attack on pearl harbour, all hell brakes loose & he gets separated from his family & ends up in a Japanese intern camp & the story follows him to the war end.

I think it's an excellent film. Clearly had a huge budget & is pretty unique in it's take on that era. Christian Bale is superb. John Malchovich plays a big part & is also very good. On re watching I realised a young Ben stiller is also in it in a small way.
Cinematography is fantastic. The P51 plane scene is up there with the best & you can tell the quality of it, being pre CGI.
It's not a gruesome film, but is pretty emotional, as your drawn along the harrowing road the young lad is thrown into, from being a cosseted rich kid, pre war.

If you haven't watched it. Please do so. I honestly think you won't be disappointed.
I think I'm going to have to give it a....
9/10.

War of the Worlds: Revival

Son wanted to watch as he is a fan of the previous films. Oh.....what did I just watch! 1/10
Looks like an advert for Microsoft, Google and Tesla(and Amazon of course).
I have watched some bad movies but I think this tops them all.
The hacking options in the mouse menu and movement agencies handing out codes over a teams chat took me over the edge.
I genuinely think this is the worst movie I’ve ever watched.

Did he love it ?
He was amused by some of the scenes - like the hacking/taking over drones or cars with a right click of a mouse and a single person handling the threat assessment for the entire world! But mostly of the AI alien ships/walkers as that's the only resemblance to the older movies with the same name. After about 30 minutes then screen share nature of the film got exhausting. But by then we were too far invested and had to see it through(me with a lot of eye rolls and huffing and puffing)
He is 12.

How to train your dragon (2025) - 6.5/10
I didn't remember much from the animated one but i think this was pretty much a carbon copy. It was well done but why was it made?

28 Years Later.

Personally, I quite enjoyed it, though I believe I would have preferred an urban setting as opposed to the countryside.
Overall, I found it to be the weakest of the three movies.

I think its greatest strength was the technical production aspect of it, such as the camera work, use of colour, and so on.
Performances from the cast were solid.

Damn. I had the 28 ... Later trilogy lined up for a marathon viewing this weekend. These scores for the third are most disappointing.

Do it. I’d be interested to hear how you get on with them as I watched all 3 in the space of a week.

The first film, albeit undisputedly iconic, felt dated and shallow. The second film added some bombast but was otherwise silly. I enjoyed the third film the most.

See how you get on!

Oh really? What made you enjoy the third film the most? My rankings of all 3 are the opposite to yours, so I'm curious as to what made the third interesting to you.

I gave some mini-reviews here, that will probably help you get the gist of my thoughts :)

The second film is clearly the worst though (out of the original 2).

Edit: I expanded my thoughts a bit in this follow-up post.

Ahh cool, have read them now!

Yeah, I didn't find the second film great either. I always found the teleporting in the second film so odd - how on earth did their infected dad just happen to appear in the tunnel near the end of the film?

I've rewatched the second film a few times now, and I've found it more baffling on each rewatch. Even during that tunnel scene, when the adult army woman with a loaded weapon points it at the 2 children in the dark, shouting confusing directions at them at the top of her voice in a place where loud noises could get them killed, instead of simply leading them down, only to be utterly useless and have them fall anyway, at which point they are no longer able to speak or hear her for some reason. And then they discover she's obviously dead.

@Nabinium Haha yeah, I think the bit that did it for me was them saying: “yup, she’s definitely, DEFINITELY infected and dangerous” … and then matey-boy just swans in for a smooch. WUT.
It was so stupid that it was just too funny

I rewatched it before the 3rd film came out, just so I could remind myself of what happened, but then again, I don't think I should've bothered rewatching the second. It just reminded me how I was constantly annoyed throughout the film at the poor decisions/writing

All last night:

War of the worlds with tea bag or whatever he’s called. Terrible.

Heads of state, just as terrible.

Accountant 2 - not a patch on the first, got distracted watching YouTube. Overly long.
