5080 & 5090 Coil Whine Thread

How does it compare to the 4090FE?

I’m close to buying the 5090FE but if reports are it’s a lot worse I may go for something different.

The 4090 I had was on the limit of what I can tolerate.
My 5090 FE (undervolted) is very similar or maybe even slightly quieter in terms of coil whine than my 4090 FE. I would just buy it and try it for yourself. You can always return it within 14 days. I switched from a Corsair RM850x PSU (850w was plenty when the 5090 is undervolted) to an NZXT C1500 PSU and the coil whine reduced very slightly as well.

Great PSU that one, I also have the same :D. Grabbed it from the rainforest when it was reduced and ended up paying £259.99.

Happy with that given that it's future proof when nvidia inevitably ditch pushing 600W through one cable and give the go ahead for two 12V-2x6 sockets on their cards.

I had only bought one PSU before (£125 for the RM850X), so spending double that was a bit of shock, but then i remembered it's 'cheap' in the grand scheme of things. I'm sure the RM850X would have been fine with an undervolted 5090, but for piece of mind i thought i should upgrade for ATX 3.1 and to future proof (whatever that's worth these days).

I got an Inno3D GeForce RTX 5090 iCHILL Frostbite with barely audible coil-whine, an incompatible black bracket and a missing screw. I contacted Inno3D Europe but they couldn't help me with a proper bracket and the missing screw. Fortunately I had a screw that fit, but it wasn't black so it looks a bit out of place.

Since it had so little coil-whine i decided to keep it.

Glad to hear you won the coil whine lottery, but that is very poor support when you spend £££ and they cannot even help with the smallest of things. I suspect most AIB companies would be equally as useless.

Is it safe to use the Xtreme Waterforce RTX 5090 AIO in a vertical position in terms of potential leakage of thermal gel or liquid metal? I just have really bad luck with coil whine. I’ve had several SUPRIMs, including the Liquid version, and they all buzzed. :( It’s really getting me down.

I used mine since May vertically and check today, no leaking. I believe it was on older versions.
However, my 12vhpwr did melt this week ...

Ahh jeez, sorry to hear that. What were you doing when it melted? Sustained 500w+ load?
Was never that much over that on average with an undervolt, but shouldn'nt melt at 600w...from other thread:
So put a Thermal Grizzly WireView Pro on my card (Gig Aorus Waterforce) in May, about a week after getting it so nothing melts....and undervolted, no mods.
What's that smell?
It melted?

Actually cable from psu to it is perfect, so just gpu. Hopefully RMA is fine, not OCs.
I ll also reach out to TG as seems like a decent company.

Well, the 5090 has been a journey...
Need to borrow my sons 4070Ti now for Battlefield Weekend.

Damn, sorry :( I hope you get it swapped out fast. Keep us updated. Gigabyte have a UK RMA centre at least, so that's a bonus.

I get get worried when it gets over 500w in a short 3Dmark benchmark, let alone a sustained load. Thankfully the games I play are not particularly power hungry and with my undervolt I experienced sustained loads of 200-350w.

The retailers have said I'd get a replacement or a refund. They have no 5090s so hopefully a refund. Just waiting on a label.

Also, Thermal Grizzly have offered to repair it, so thought that was cool.

Now concerned I should get an Astral for pin monitoring...while 'sensible' choice would be th FE. Take it yours is doing well?

Good to hear! A refund at this point sounds promising. I assume prices have dropped a reasonable amount since you bought it?

Loving my FE, no complaints. The downside is that it seems a lucky dip with regards to coil whine (based on everything i've read), but mine is pretty good. If you are patient, you could always buy one and return it if it is horrendously loud. When I upgraded the PSU the coil whine lessened which was a nice bonus. I could not stomach paying top dollar for an Astral or Suprim, but that's just me. I have a 4090 FE and now 5090 FE, and could not be happier. I will not doubt be seeking a 6090 FE if possible.

Cool thanks. Got my card for 2.6 which was good for May. Retailing much the same. £800 MORE than FE for pin monitoring...

Yeah..... I'm not sure about that. If I was hammering the 5090 more, maybe I could justify it for the pin monitoring and better cooler, but I use mine a gaming only PC. You're clearly happy to spend £2.6k in the first place, so what is £2.65/2.7 on the Astral :D

Hi chaps - long time no post from me (in here anyway) *waves*

Well, I have solved my 5090 coil whine problem at last

After returning a Suprim, an Astral, an Aorus Master and a Palit Mirror Infinity, I finally settled on a MSI Gaming Trio. Still a bit noisy with the fans, so I water blocked it… this is the way for temps.

I still wasn’t satisfied with the overall noise though and, lo and behold the solution is… a pair of Apple AirPod Max. These are aggressively expensive and due a product refresh but the noise cancelling is the absolute ****. It’s like god himself installed himself into the AirPods and said “all noise, be gone!!!” - far superior to my Momentum 4 headphones.

It’s almost supernatural - I can sit next to my machine with it blaring whine and fans over 1000 rpm and I can’t even hear it.

I can actually sit there and enjoy a game. It know it sounds a bit sad, but I almost cried when I realised the struggle was over.

So for anyone else distraught - this is a real solution to the problem.

Currently running the card overclocked with a 350hz boost, nicely hitting 3100-3200. Temps at low 50s degrees, can’t hear it. Winning

OH.... MY.... GOD.... It is Nitefly.
1) you're still alive, 2) you are finally happy with a 5090. Congratulations. I feel like there should be a big ceremony to celebrate.
