What film did you watch last night?

World Trade Centre (2006)

This is the first film I've seen based on the September 11th attacks and didn't know the anything about the persons portrayed in the film. Not knowing the outcome really helped to keep the tension up for the entire film. It did almost creep in to being a bit schmaltzy at times. Overall though I think Oliver Stone and the cast did a decent job of just telling the story as it was, without any politics or conspiracy theories.

7/10

I was lucky enough to be in tge US the week this came out and took a punt on seeing it. Man I've never seen people so so emotional at a movie before. Dead silence all through the movie and a big cheer and round of applause at the end.

Mixed with a lot of random tears throughout. A woman's mobile went off, the mood changed and the anger that blew through the theatre was incredible.

Don't think ill ever see that kind of a reaction to a movie again. Such strong emotion.

I watched Zero Dark Thirty last night. I probably wouldn't have watched it if I'd known what it was about but I was just browsing a top films list and it was the only one near the top I hadn't seen. I wouldn't have watched it because I'm generally not keen on films where I know a lot of what happened. Luckily this was so well made it was still very enjoyable.

The stones on those guys that went in to dig them out is off the charts brave.[\spoiler]

Together (at the Cinema)

A relationship ‘on the rocks’ is put to the test when the couple move to a remote location…

Good, although not quite as ‘deep’ / ‘creative’ as I was hoping.

This film has a solid ‘core’; likeable characters, well acted, set in a well paced story with relatable themes and dialogue that felt ‘genuine’. A lean runtime too, it whizzed by.

Like ‘Weapons’, it ends with a lean into comedy, as if it would just be ‘too silly’ to end without humour. It isn’t as jarring as ‘Weapons’ but, again, I’m not really too sure how I feel about this ‘trend’ in horror films. Otherwise, the humour / banter between the couple felt well judged.

Being more critical, there are at least two heavy nods towards ‘The Thing’, which are so ‘on the nose’ it felt like a lover letter homage, at the expense of film’s own originality. I also think it lingered on some of the ‘practical effects’ a little too much… I prefer it to CGi but just like that, less is more - otherwise it breaks immersion. Yup, I’m watching a film.

Unfortunately, there is also pet peeve of mine that cropped up more than once, which I will dock it half a point for:

Dream sequences… meh. There was some really unsettling imagery that turned out to not be based ‘in the real’ and I always think… what is the point? Either have it reveal backstory, or make it do… something. Not just a random scary face in a dream.

7/10 - well balanced, competently made horror. Hit the spot.

Independence Day 7.5/10

Does it make sense? Not really. Is it full of plot holes? Sure. Is it incredibly nauseously American? In places. But it's still one of my favourite summer blockbusters. Now I've never watched the sequel, I know it doesn't get good reviews, think it's worth watching?

Most superhero movies are moving on from origin stories, it was the same with spider-man and batman. Everyone knows them, we don't need them again.
Yes, I wasn't asking for an origin story... It has even already been agreed that that isn't the issue, there just seemed to be things going on that we didn't know about, like we were watching the third episode of a TV series, which was apparently his goal... which I commented was an odd goal. Hopefully you're caught up now.

Together - 7/10

Decent body horror film, nothing more to add from Niteflys review above. A good version of this genre.

@Nitefly Of the few bits that really didn't seem to make sense, or the one that most stood out for me was

After they fell into the pit why did they spend the whole night in there when in the morning they just climbed out of the hole easily

Mission Impossible FR. Thought it was pretty great overall though it is long, didn't feel to bored though a bit heavy on trying to tie it all back to the start more or less.
However that Submarine part of the film, that was 10 out of 10, from start to finish, without a single word said.

I’m not 100% sure but presume it was because of a combo of: (i) they were lost and less likely to find their way in the dark, (ii) it was raining and shelter was good in the interim, (iii) wet rocks are slippy / getting out was dangerous, so they couldn’t do it immediately.

Always put off watching this, how would you rate it compared to Zulu? Might watch them back to back at some point
I think it does well as basically a prequel to the battle at Rourkes Drift. This one doesn't have a happy ending if you're British though. :p
