*** The Official Steam Deck Thread ***

Just started playing around with chiaki-ng on the Steam Deck and surprised how well it works, fills quite a specific niche of "I don't want to go sit in the living room but still want to play some games I have on the PS5" but integrates nicely into the non-steam games section and in my, admittedly limited, testing, it was lag free and looked pretty good. Suspect it was helped by gig ethernet connected PS5 but the steam deck was still on wifi.
I can't get it working on mine at all. Can't find the PS5, and don't seem to be able to use the PS network login. Any ideas?

I've decided to get a second hand Steam deck OLED and have hopefully found one via a wanted thread. I'm initially going to setup emudeck and xbplay to dip my toes into things. I will then start to build out my steam games collection maybe starting with RDR2 as I've never played it, but hear it runs well and looks good. Aside from the items mentioned is there anything else people would recommend as essential things to get setup?

Can't wait!

You will want to get some of these

Rubber stick on pads for the rear buttons. Utterly transforms the feel and comfort when using those rear buttons. An absolutely essential purchase.

Agree with this. I also got some slightly larger rubber stick covers - but that's deffo personal preference.

I've found a cheapo all in-one bluetooth keyboard / mouse combo useful for setup of things, inc emudeck etc.

I had some issues with the PS network piece but my PS5 was always visible. Same network etc. for the PS and the steam deck? I used the 'find psn account id' thing:

to get that piece but otherwise it was fairly straight forward. Did you follow the guide to setup remote play etc. on the playstation itself?

Yep, same network, enabled remote play etc, but the ps5 just doesn't show up. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling it at some point and see if that helps

Only thing I can think otherwise is some discovery stuff on your router being blocked? Have you tried entering the IP address manually?

I just got back from an almost 4.5 HR flight from Crete (delayed on the ground for 45min) and I was really pleased (and surprised) that my steamdeck lasted the entire flight.

admittedly for the whole duration I was playing only terraria, braid and crumble so hardly taxing but still 4 hrs and still 5% charge remaining i thought was outstanding for an early LCD model .

Mine was a god send on a flight to Aus earlier this year!

However now it seems all the airlines are banning the use of battery packs, hopefully the in seat plugs on Singapore will give enough juice for me to play on a flight to New Zealand soon :mad:

Had my 1TB OLED now since Christmas. I like it, but i must admit its a bit useless at trying to play any AAA titles. Im not sure how people play things like cyberpunk or hogwarts on it. Its great for things like Hollow Knight and platformers though. I loved Tinkykin.

Overall id say its a little dissapointing power wise.

I now have my gaming PC dual booting Windows and Steam OS. It's much more convenient to use Steam OS for gaming, it renders HDR much better than Windows and I like the performance overlay that's baked in - my CPU runs much cooler compared to the same games in Windows.

Just set my Steam Deck back up again after moving a couple of months ago, and annoyingly the sound seems to be knackered when using an external device (in this case, HDMI through the Dock) :(

Everything's really distorted when it's set to the external sound output, and sounds like the sample rate is wrong to my ears (e.g. 48Khz when it should be 44.1, or vice-versa). I've tried messing about in desktop mode to sort this out but to no avail. This affects both the Steam OS UI sounds and any games that I've tried.

As soon as I switch back to the internal speakers, the sound works perfectly again.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have a feeling that I've encountered this before, but can't at all remember how I fixed it. It used to work perfectly before I packed it all up to move house.

EDIT - Fixed it :o The optical cable going into the back of my pre-amp from the TV was loose. Sorry all, stupid error! :p

I think it's pretty clear what the limitations of it are. It's a £300 device, it's not gonna rip through AAA titles. Heck, most £300 GPUs can't do that...

That being said, given the tight screen, you can make compromises on quality to get certain newer games working and it still being acceptable - I've played cyberpunk, ff7 Remake etc amonst others working just fine. It's the balance of power v portability and flexibility of playing sitting on the couch.

Any game I really want to play that it can't handle, I just stream via moonlight. I much prefer playing native though.

I also use mine docked as a PC / console hybrid for my kiddo - it's fine with games like wobbly life / human fall flat / lego games, and obvs is an emulation beast.

Haz anyone got experience with AR glasses on deck, like the Viture Pro XR?

Best gaming device I've ever used, but I'd love to have a sneaky session in bed without lugging the thing over my face.

A wireless controller and some glasses for flights or abject luxury sounds phenomenal.

Playing BG3 and it's running great, I've heard the end game isn't quite as solid, but very happy so far.

I see they've finally added the ability for the Steamdeck to upload to desktop, it used to be only PC to Steamdeck that worked, means I can download a game overnight on the Steamdeck rather than to my PC, then upload it at far quicker rates than my internet. Nice addition!

My rule of thumb for it is "Did this run well on an OG Xbox One?". If the answer is no, it probably won't run well on the Deck either. The vast majority of AAA games which came out after the Xbox One's demise don't run well, so it's reasonably accurate (with notable exceptions).

It's not a perfect rule. And the Deck actually does a better job of some games that the Xbox One did. But it sets expectations reasonably well (e.g. The Witcher 3 runs fine, Cyberpunk is a bit ropey, AC: Odyssey runs fine, Valhalla is a problem, etc.).

one issue I find at times when my console doesnt show is I have to disconnect the internet on my deck and turn it back on and it will show in the list. are you finidng it shows the console for a second then it disappears?

256gb on sale atm at Steam, decent price £270 for new, I had one of these from release but sold it, have just bought the 256gb again for some cheap armchair gaming, I'm sure things have moved on a lot since I had one software wise.
