2.1 Speakers for PC gaming

True but that’s when the cost would come in for doing it properly

I may move the ps5 back downstairs for the home cinema set up and then use an audio amp for 2.1 setup for gaming pc

So change of plan, I've moved the PS5 downstairs and will be going with a 2.1 set up for my PC gaming

I bought the Fosi MC351 and connected to my PC via optical
My Edifier R1280DB's are connected to the L and R channels

I set the Fosi to OPT but I only get sound from the R channel. I can only presume its something to do with the L not knowing what input to use for sound - any ideas? Have I missed something in the setup?

So those edifiers are active, right? there's a speaker cable that comes from the right speaker to go to the left? How have you wired things up to the amp? Via what connections?

Via speaker cable, using the red and black doodads that hold the wire in? looking at the edifier the speaker connectors on the right speaker are outputs for the left, and not an input. Since they are active, the right speaker has an amp in it, and it normally drives the right speaker and provides power and signal to the left. Since you are providing signal in the correct place for the left speaker, your fosi is driving that. Since you aren't for the right, it's not getting a signal.

You've bought an AMP for active speakers, does your motherboard or soundcard have an optical out? Just use that, send the Fosi amp back for a refund.

I believe they have a built in DAC of decent quality so you don't need anything special other than data passthrough to the end product (aka the speakers) which optical will provide.

I might use the Fosi amp in my son’s room. Connect it to the tv via optical and run some speakers off it that I have that I know will work

Get some nice passives, funnily enough Edifier do a really cheap pair of surprisingly good passives for around the £60-70 range with the P12 and P17 range and either would run on a wet fart power wise.

You could also look for some second hand Monitor Audio BR1 or BR2's and they'd be fantastic and run really well with a mini amp too.

If you own speakers already no harm in giving it a shot regardless.

this was my thinking as well. I was just trying to figure out if he's been sending voltage to the output in the right speaker, if he's wired it up like that. Hopefully the right (main) speaker is ok, since it was likely taking voltage through the left speaker amp output connectors. My next step would have been to attach optical as you said, and wire the left speaker back into the right.

I imagine they'll still be okay, they seem to be able to run one speaker as passive but neither of the amps involved put out a megaton of power and I doubt he cranked things up either.

Fingers crossed at least, if by some hugely unfortunate trick of fate damaged the secondary/slave speaker I'll advocate my suggestions from a post or two back. :p

Well I’ll try tomorrow

I’ll cut out the Fosi amp, go back to using my speakers via optical to the pc with a sub plugged in directly to the speakers

I have some spare passive speakers that I’ll set up in my sons room with the amp for using his Xbox as opposed to the tv speakers

Quick question, I have the Edifier speakers connected to my PC by optical. The sub then connects into the back of the speakers
Is this the best set up or using my Soundblaster Z SE soundcard, should I utilise the front and sub ports on that?

I only ask because when I'm in the creative app, i change it to 2.1 but when i test the config, i hear nothing with the optical set up

Connect sub directly to sub out on soundcard, enable subwoofer on the soundcard setting and set crossover to 80hz. Use analogue output for L/R .

Your second paragraph sound correct in how it should function, you're just connecting it up incorrectly.

Optical out will send all audio, from stereo PCM to 5.1 (if sending DD/DTS bitstream)

Home cinema AVR I've got my head around but PC audio..no where near

So instead of connecting the sub to the back of the speakers; connect it to the sub port on the soundcard to start
And the speakers, disconnect the optical and connect the speakers to the headphone port?

Switch everything off
Connect the left & right outputs from the soundcard into your L/R speakers analogue input. Set the levels on both to minimum for now to be safe
Connect the single subwoofer output from the soundcard into your subwoofer analogue input. . Set the levels on both to minimum for now to be safe

Set analogue output from the soundcard, and enable subwoofer, set crossover on the soundcard setting to 80hz. On the subwoofer itself, set crossover to maximum or bypass it. Set phase to 0.

Adjust levels on soundcard master level, speakers and subwoofer to match up. Be aware of any possible clipping if soundcard outputs are at higher levels.

Only connect headphones to the headphone port- that is a amplified output and isn't suitable for line level.

Perfect, will give it a try.

I need to find a 1 to 2 RCA cable for it.

I have a 1 to 2 RCA Cable currently connected to the sub which I think was the only one I had. The other cable I have is a 2 to 2 RCA cable

I've had a check but couldnt see anything.
Found a cable and connected the 1-2 RCA to the FRONT (R/L) port on the soundcard.

Tested and it sounds as though the audio is coming from both speakers at the same time when testing in the Sound Blaster Command app
Not sure if Ive missed something
