MSI MAG Tomahawk X870/X870E Owners Thread

im thinking of this board for new build, does the bios need flashed prior to cpu ram etc,or can it be built and then flashed?
Pairing it with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and a 9070XT
Oh, other note, does the 8 pin pcie header at the bottom of the board need to be plugged in as well as the 2 8pin headers for the cpu?
TIA

As far as I remember it just recognized my 9800X3D out of the box (do flash a newer bios afterwards for improved compatibility and memory performance etc).

I've got 1 CPU 8pin plugged in and the PCIE header at the bottom as well.

System worked fine previously without having the PCIE at the bottom plugged in (and it's still very unclear what it actually does in the day-to-day running of the system, tbh), but I figured I'd distribute the wattage, since I've got a pretty hefty GPU (5080).

(edit: talking about the X870 here, not the E-version)

This is important if you are using the several nvme/sata ports. I had some very strange issues with performance from a SSD then I realised that that connector wasn't connected.

Other than that, no issues here. CPU installed and memory from my old intel system worked great, even the expo settings were fine. I've updated BIOS, enable PBO and EXPO and it's been running very nicely !

Fantastic, ill flash to latest bios after build then, typically its always the latest you need to do instead of each one, am i right?
Was like that on my current mobo, i suppose all manufacturers are the same?
Ill be using a 9070xt and 1 nvme but will just use that PCIe at bottom anyway as Forceflow says, spread the wattage more evenly.
Looking forward to building the pc in the near future!

I’ve been having random Display Blackscreens for around 1-2s every 30mins to an hour. On the gpu and on the iGPU - disabling changed nothing.

Regardless of BIOS or AMD Drivers and a weird behavior in stress tests (display blackscreen when stopping stresstest) which I fixed with disabling C States.

The gpu was stuck on lower power levels drawing only around 20-50W.

The random display timeout still remains. But I could never force the error again and it never happenes in gaming or bios but on desktop only.

Any clues or ideas? ️‍♂️
I’m thinking hardware issue of mainboard. Been dragging this issue around for 2 weeks…

Yes I’m on the newest bios and newest amd driver which came out yesterday.

I have just tried a pair of AKG Y50BT headphones with the X870E Tomahawk and I'm getting constant stuttering all the time anyone else had issues with bluetooth headphones.

Paired some Soundcore Q20's not much stutter as the AKG but still stuttering.

I have just noticed the bluetooth driver is a Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 so the bluetooth might work better if I attached my ariel lol

Ps ariel fixed the stuttering.

Sounds similar to an experience I was/am having. I went into some detail on another (gpu) thread
Detail your setup so I can see if there is anything in common. (feel free to PM if you prefer)

Code:
Description:
- AGESA PI 1.2.0.3g updated.
- Improved compatibility of the Ryzen 8000 series CPU.
Flashed it, played a few rounds of R6: Siege, nothing out of the ordinary for now. (on the regular X870)
