**** The Official Apple September Event thread - Tuesday 9th September 2025 @ 18:00 BST ****

The biggest upgrade this year is the 15 Pro being fully paid off and it being such a capable phone, now costing me only AppleCare+ per month.

The regular 17 is a really solid phone now with 120hz, 256gb and A19. The Pixel 10 base with 256gb is £100 more at 899. Although no one is paying full price for a Pixel.

I've always preferred the lighter non-Pro models but the 60hz was a tough pill to swallow. Unless they do something ground breaking with the camera over the next few iterations my next iPhone will be a base model.
I have a 15 Pro Max and my AppleCare+ ends on September 22nd; is there an option to extend it?

I think the iPhone has hit a plateau since like iPhone 12 or 13 I'd argue. Perhaps iPhone 15 when they had USB-C. But then....all the phones i mention uses the same verion of iOS so the way we interact with it is the same.

People don't go around shooting 28 years later with their iPhones, it's a halo feature, not a day to day use.

I'd be 100% skipping this one now that i've slept on it, and if next year's model is still the same fraction forward then I might break my routine and keep my 14 Pro for the 5th year.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that Steve would be turning in his grave at the state of the camera app on the Pro. It lags when it opens, slow shutter response. Opens to a black view finder several times a week. Noticeable shifts when fast zooming through the lenses. It was exactly the same when I tried the 16 Pro too and I suspect it will be the same with this.

They should focus on getting the basics right.

Is that a hardware or software issue, though?

good question, it's clearly a choice made by apple and others, they do not see the need to optimize.

That's a bit of a stretch.

is it? what exactly does say, garmin(i've got recent experience with epix 2) miss compared to apple watch?

24/7 hr
all fitness tracking
sleep tracking
gps
mapping
notifications
oled display
tough build
10 day battery between charges
HRV monitoring
stress monitoring
pulse monitoring

top of my head, what is it missing ?

with no experience of the epix, you'll have to help me:
- Siri integration
- Calendar appointment sync
- Ringing people directly on the watch
- Cellular integration with an eSIM
Does it do those things?

Similar, but not same. NFC, fast charging, app support, few other subtle differences and I think Garmin lacks some of the 'smart' features AW can do.

The reason the Garmin is so good from longevity perspective is that they IIRC use custom HW chips for HR monitor, whereas as with AW it's done in software and consumes CPU cycles.

Then there's the vast amount of reports about Garmin as an example having an atrocious app experience, not capturing sleep, and generally not being anywhere near as sleek as AW.

Like I said, they do not offer the same features/experience.

The more activity-focused watches get better battery life because their screens and smart capabilities are a lot worse. The Apple Watch, for example, has far better integration with my phone, whereas the Garmin is lacking.

I'd never by a Garmin to be my dedicated smart watch; equally, I wouldn't get an Apple Watch if my goal was activity/sports tracking, because a Garmin is better. For a watch that does it all/balance, AW is better (for me).

I do agree that AW is better as a smart watch but no matter how I look at it, the "all day" battery life is hard to take seriously, I suppose it is all day if you're happy to drop it on charge in the morning and get into routine of it. I agree garmin does miss some features - garmin being the example we use here.

I suppose it all depends on your use, my use is more fitness focused and sleep tracking and so on is more important than say notifications or calls - I always disable them.

Honestly just hoped apple would bump up the battery life to 3-5 days on ultra and I could then justify that to sit next to my iphone and mac but with 2 days max, it sorta kills the watch for me. I suppose I should try it and see if I can live with the daily quick-charge in the morning routine that most users seem to get used to. That's why I'm a bit disappointed.

my first world problem. I'm driving to europe tomorrow.. and back on 20th, wanted to pre-order 17P but it'd get delivered on 19th when I'm away! does anyone know if there was an option to schedule it? if not, how often do they sell out? I'm happy to order when I'm back but don't want to end up in some 2 month wait for stock/

all the phone being in the large camera bump on the air was impressive but yeah really not blown away.

That lanyard to make your phone a handbag was very odd

I can't stop it from being nicked by some douche on a moped when you're walking down the street if it's just magnets, surely...

If I do go for it I’ve decided I’m not getting the orange. Not sure I’m cool enough to advertise my flamboyant personality through the purchase of brightly coloured consumer goods.

A huge number of females I see use a similar accessory already. Modern phones don’t fit in female pockets, if they even have them at all.

Not sure that makes the over engineered Apple version of the same thing odd. It’s just not aimed at you.

I just conceded that I’m old and it would be fun for a day but then wonder why I have an Orange phone six months down the line. Lol

- I prefer side finger print or under screen
A fingerprint sensor is the one feature i wish Apple would include/bring back; it baffles me why they haven't given the technology is pretty robust and more security options would only be a good thing.

Will a US 17 PM model work ok in the UK? Probably get one in October when I’m over there, nice little saving.
There are differences in bands between regional devices (https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/cellular/) and it's worth looking at your network here to see what bands are and are not supported before purchasing.

They've gone from trickling out a couple of minor revisions and one decent new thing, to doing stuff in software and doing next to nothing with the hardware, I'm sure the shareholders and beancounters are happy though... :/
Even then, the big software features aren't turning up on time. Certainly maximising profits seems to be Tim's main goal at the minute and imo, some fresh blood at the top wouldn't be a bad thing.
