*** HP Reverb G2 Owners Thread ***

sure..,. I agree. I wasn't saying the G2 is better than the quest 3. but specifically replying about the resolution. within the albeit limited sweet spot of the lenses the G2 is still a high image quality VR headset

as for the controller batteries. I bought some lithium 1.5v AA rechargable ones so that never bothered me. that said in terms of controller battery staying power... i still do not know what sorcery oculus used in the original touch controllers. they almost lasted forever and off a single aaa battery. the quest touch pro ones not as good for obvious reasons (but a very good controller otherwise)

not used the quest 3 standard ones however
Yeah sorry, resolution definitely the wrong word. Having tired it now, I definitely had forgotten how bad the lenses are in comparison - the ability to “resolve” details is definitely harder while using it, especially now that I’m used to the Q3 and being able to look through the edges of the lenses.

Since I’ve last used my G2 I’ve upgraded from 3080 to 5080 as well, so impossible to do performance comparisons, but definitely loving the simplicity of the general setup.

Only problem I’m left with is the need to use a separate Bluetooth host for the controllers - as my mobo doesn’t have one, but then again I’m mainly playing DCS / Elite Dangerous so not an issue for me.

not sure I understand the controller issue. I thought the controllers were essentially passive just shining bright lights and the cameras on the headset picked them up. I dont remember pairing them via blue tooth. you are right about the lenses. meta pancake lenses are excellent

I’ll admit I spent a total of 30seconds troubleshooting it, but I’m led to believe the controllers send their data to the computer (like gyro data, button presses etc) via a wireless connection to the headset. But that part of the chain hasn’t (or won’t?) be implemented.

You’re correct that the lights on the controllers are tracked by the headset itself, but it needs more than that to work.

When I first started it up all I know is I couldn’t see my controllers in SteamVR, and then I stopped trying

Correct, the non-camera visible data is normally sent via Bluetooth to the headset, but reading this is proprietary to WMR. So pairing the controllers direct to standard Windows Bluetooth instead is a simpler approach for the Oasis driver. This means if you don’t have Bluetooth support on your motherboard you have to use a USB adapter.

AHH sorry despite the last few posts I had forgotten the new driver was a bit of a hack. my apologies for doubting you.
I know I am being naive but if MS are no longer making money from the headset would it be too much to ask them to release all their proprietary data on the headset?

I think it would. The guy who made the Oasis driver is actually a Microsoft developer from the disbanded WMR team. He worked on this project in his own time without any assistance from Microsoft. Clearly the massive software company could have done this as an official release, or released the original source code, but chose not to.

The galling thing is Microsoft continue to work on VR in the form of their new Mesh platform using headsets from Meta.

I'm so glad this driver isn't available, even though I don't have any WMR hardware. I hate planned obsolescence. The fact a single developer in their own time (admittedly one of the old WMR team) could develop this and release it, shows that this wasn't an impossible task, and one Microsoft could have done themselves.

I have a G2 but the power box thing is broken. Cost over £100 to replace so I just got a Pico 4 Ultra instead. It's much better overall.

You mean IS available… right? :D

Probably is better overall as it is 4 years newer. No DisplayPort though.
Honestly you'd never tell. I use a regular usb type c that you'd use to fast charge a phone . I only ever had an issue using wireless because my modem was only 5ghz. Once I got a 6E router it fixed everything but I still prefer the cable for ease of use and stability. You won't get artifacts using it at 100mbs or more if the latency is good.
Image quality looks similar to me. Comparable. Maybe, maybe a tiny bit sharper on the G2 in the centre if you were being very picky, but it's basically nothing. Both are very sharp. Colours are a bit more vibrant on Pico. The main thing is you get a way bigger field of view where it's clear. The difference in that regard is hilariously massive.

Yeah, it can’t be understated how important the improved clarity over a wider field of view is.

Regardless of the resolution of the screen or bandwidth of the connection, the reduced clarity off centre makes it basically meaningless.
