Borderlands 4 (2025)

Whilst I do think the visuals in BL4 are better than some are claiming, it does feel like they've used features of UE5 that aren't really necessary in such a title, like the nanite system mentioned in the HUB video.

The upgraded visuals are nice and a noticeable uptick over BL3, you do feel they could have just used the BL3 engine and everyone would have been happy.

The BL3 engine and gameplay was excellent and the game was just let down by the story. I've been saying for ages that they could/should re-release BL2 with the BL3 engine and people would pay full price for it again.

Yeah I agree, people just want to play a good game, Borderlands is extremely stylised so it doesn't really benefit from all the advanced features being used in UE5 in the same way a game designed to be photorealistic does. I think the main issue is that turning the settings down makes it look worse than the older games, and you still have worse frame rates than them. If you could turn the settings down and it looked the same or better than its 6 year old predecessor, people wouldn't be as ******.

Now DLSS Quality is so good, might there be a future in which Nvidia actually removes native resolution rendering altogether? They could modify their drivers such that, when native resolution is selected in a game, the card actually uses DLSS Quality behind the scenes.

I doubt they would but, if they did, I'd wager no one would actually notice and instead praise the performance, until one of the review sites 'uncovered' the truth in which case there'd be a massive 'scandal' about how we're all being cheated.

So long as "overall" visuals are better, I don't care what they do. Without dlss/fsr, we wouldn't be seeing the visuals we are nowadays. If we didn't have upscaling and games ran at 80+ fps @ native 4k, we wouldn't be seeing games looking as good as what they are today, which is ok if people don't care about visuals, personally I want great visuals too though. The only people who won't use upscaling are the ones with an inferior solution to native or/and out of spite, won't use it because principles, which is ok but their loss.

Having said that, we have already seen the next step in graphical rendering, which may even bypass upscaling:

People arent mad because they have to use dlss and frame gen at max settings 4k with a mid tier GPU. People are mad because they have to use dlss and frame gen to get playable fps at 108p or 1440p in a game that looks not much better than borderlands 2 or 3 which would run on a potato. Ive played all the previous entries and would like to enjoy this one aswell but there's no denying that the performance requirement doesnt match the visuals on offer. A good indicator of its poor optimisation is that it runs worse at max settings than Path Traced Cyberpunk.

I haven't watched the video yet but recently played some bl 3 and bl 4 is visually better when you consider how much more open world and dense it is. The ray tracing really adds to the game too but I am using hardware RT, which aids even further, the lighting and shadows are very noticeable even with this art style but I suspect is lost on a lot of people that don't notice such things.

@Noxia

This is why I take photos of my screen instead of screenshots as screenshots in hdr only provides jxr format which can't be uploaded so then have to convert to png and upload which means you lose even more quality and also, it looks worse in SDR (granted you can't see HDR in photos but it shows the dynamic range far better). Screenshots show of the RT very well despite the "cartoon" look.

As a new player to the francise does anybody have go to guides or advice?

I feel im just winging it and from the tutorial to level 18 now im not really getting an understanding on things.

Things like what i should be looking for in weapons and how i should be looking to spend my skill points?

I am currently on Amon, should i just be looking at DPS on weapons? for the skill points im a just starting from the bottom and filling all the earlier ones 3/3 & 5/5?

I thought id have picked more info as i have played but feel i could be missing vital parts of the game/gameplay, not sure its aimed at new players

I dumped Amon and went with Rafa.

Didn't like Amon's melee power up.

I ignore DPS for the most part, I'm more interested in the single shot damage capability over DPS. With some character builds it can absolutely help make powerful builds but for how I play and the weapons I enjoy it really dosnt make much difference.
I tend to 9/10 of the times just stick with Jacobs guns. High single shot damage. I tend to gravitate more towards the sniper rifles. They can be devastating, aim for crit shots. Most enemy can be taken out with 1 or 2 shots.
Jacobs guns unfortunately have smaller mags. Damage they do far outweighs the drawbacks though.

I tend not to look too deep into BL games from a skill point basis. There are countless guides on character builds to get the most out of them. What to spend skills points on, what gadgets/weapons/elements etc etc all work together to make the most powerful builds. I find it all too much of a nause though. I'd rather just jump in and play.

Find the leveling guide for Amon: https://www.youtube.com/@Moxsy

I was using him but dumped him at level 10 and swapped to Harlowe, way better play style and a F skill that feels useful.

thank you for this.

Can i ask i dont plan on changing characters right now, but if i do how does it work?

Does the game/story start all over again? are all the unlocks and collectibles still there or do i need to do it all again?

I barely use melee or grenades, i just run and gun and jump around like crazy i feel this is not the way it should be played and drag out battles/bosses.

Start again until you finish the story on one character then you can roll any of the others at level 30

ty sir.

what level are people redeeming these at? I opened my first one last night at level 18 not sure if thats was a waste or not.

I hoard them and never use them, a bit like all the potions in RPG's.

Haha, yeh, i collect all the shift codes, last time i looked in my BL3 game, i think i have over 800, might even be 900, i also redeem them for every platform as well.

Increased my shader cache size to 100 GB seems to have solved a lot of the crashing issues and a lot less stutter i was crashing all the time before.

So i completed thew campaign and as an Altaholic in many games im want to try some other classes.
Ive started another vault hunter chose to skip prologue but have not got the option to skip the campaign and boost to lvl 30.

Anything i need to do beforehand apart from finish campaign on main?

* As low as 760p resolution on all consoles; HUD and UI affected as well, can result in blurry text and UI.
* So called "Performance" modes are dropping into the 30 fps range.
* Game needs to be rebooted on console every 30 minutes due to memory leaks; failure to restart the game causes performance to keep falling into a slide show.
