What film did you watch last night?

Dark City (1998)

I probably would've enjoyed this a lot if I'd seen it on its original release. The premise, production design and cinematography are top notch, but it just didn't get in to the top tier for me. I wasn't entirely convinced by Keifer Sutherland's performance and Jennifer Connelly looked a touch to young.

7/10
it is literally the matrix always liked it myself.

Finally watched Sinners last night, felt a bit slow to start but once it got going (about half way in) I really enjoyed it.

Superman (2025)

I had low expectations going in, but it wasn't half bad. I've never read any superhero comics, so I have no idea whether some of the stuff in this film has been in the comics. To me some of it was just plain daft and at times felt more like a parody, either way it was quite amusing in places.

They did seem to borrow a bit too much from Superman (1978), the original Superman theme was over used. Rachel Brosnahan was doing a decent Margot Kidder, whether or not that was intentional, I don't know. The sugar thing I'm sure was in the original film, as well as a similar font for the credits. Eve reminded me of Pamela Stevenson's character in in Superman 3.

I thought Nicholas Hoult was pretty good as Lex, Mr Terrific seemed to straight up copying RDJ's Kirk Lazarus from Tropic Thunder, but it was still funny. David Corenswet was less convincing, particularly as Clark and at times I thought he came across as a bit too angry or frustrated.

I'd also like to know. If Superman is the only survivor from Krypton, how do we get Supergirl and a super dog?

Overall it wasn't great or terrible, I doubt I'd watch it again but would probably watch whatever else comes out of this rebooted DCU.

5/10

Nearly all of what was in the film was part of the comics at some point since the first Superman story in the 1930s, James Gunn took inspiration from many different eras and stories.

That wasnt a Margot Kidder important just a really good portrayal of Lois Lane.

Supergirl(Kara Zor El) in this and in the comics was sent by her parents to look after Clark, her baby cousin. However ob the way she witnessed forst had the destruction of Krypton and something happened so she didn't get to Earth till many years after Kal, so is now younger. Also Krypto in the version was her pet dog from Krypton.

In some comics he belongs to Clark(Kal El)

Also Supergirl is out next summer and a follow up to this called Man of Tomorrow is out in 2027. Along the way there are other TV shows and movies coming too.

Tron (1982) 7 / 10
Forgot how hilarious this film was, alongside the technological cheese. Jeff Bridges loping through the server room was a high point, along with a digitised Cindy Morgan!

As a kid, the CGI was utterly amazing for the time. Legacy up next!

Gattaca (1997)

Felt a bit clunky in terms of the storytelling at times and the end ultimately fizzled out but I did enjoy it overall. A generous 6/10.

Ohh, actually I don't agree at all, as I thought it was an excellent premise and story.

However it is many years since I watched so it may not have stood the test of time.

It's fairly well rated on IMDB so I think it has probably managed alright but I just found bits of it could be improved or cleaned up. By the same token, that may just be reflective of the age of the film, as it is 28 years old after all.

The premise / story is actually what kept me watching, despite Sci-Fi not really being a genre that I would watch that often.

I like that film, but it irks me when Xander Berkeley tells him that he knew he was an imposter because he held his wang with the wrong hand when he was giving his urine sample, because I do the same thing.

What do you mean, too much information?

It’s pretty “hard” sci fi, as it goes. It takes a very simple question - what if we could chart the whole genome and know everything about a person from that? - and then runs with it. It ends up looking at the societal impacts of that. It’s not just soft sci fi with laser guns in space or whatever.

Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

Another Saturday afternoon and another Bond film. Similarly to Connery's last outing, all the major set pieces are towards the end of the film. What happens up to that point is the most tongue in cheek Bond has been, more innuendo than ever before, Blofeld doing his best Dick Emery and then there's Mr Wint and Mr Kidd. Female battery reduced to just a glove slap and bikini top strangle.

6/10

What do you mean, too much information?

I wouldn't say too much information, it has to lay the groundwork for the overall concept and it does that well but it feels like it swerves that same ruthless environment that it portrays, for convenience of the plot.

The treadmill scene and the scene when he's providing a verification blood sample don't seem to collectively garner any real suspicion, in a world where every detail matters. Whilst such scenes obviously exist to create tension within the movie and as with any movie you watch, you allow for some flexibility in the plot, you begin to quickly realise that there isn't going to be any real consequences. The conclusion of the movie and how it plays out feels somewhat inevitable. I would even include Jerome's outcome in that, although it's intentionally foreshadowed within the script so at least that was a choice but I think it would have been more interesting to have been guarded until the end.

Anora - 5/10.

Baffled as to how this won Best Picture, etc. it has some funny moments, but it’s extremely repetitive and the near constant shouting was incredibly tedious.
