What film did you watch last night?

Traffic (2000)

I think I've said before that Soderbergh is a bit hit and miss for me. But this one is somewhere in the middle. It's a bit too long, it feels like it never really gets going and it lacks drama or tension at times. The acting is great, the cinematography is too but I'm not a fan of the colour grading. It wasn't really required to separate the different story threads.

6/10

A Zed & Two Noughts (ZOO) 1985, a Peter Greenaway film. (8/10)

It started with me suddenly remembering a very catchy little musical ditty I had heard in I think a Channel 4 documentary back in the late 80's which I remember was played over the image of a decomposing swan. I couldn't remember which film this was taken from, but I subconsciously knew it was a Peter Greenaway film. I knew he had made The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her lover. which I had seen. Based on the year I remember I first thought it might be his "A Draughtsman's Contract" 1982 film, but it wasn't that. Then a quick bit of youtubing landed me on the actual film. So I've watched it now.

Musical ditty just as catchy as I remember it, and now I've seen the actual full film I must say it is a classic. It has a similar cinematography feel to TCTTHW&HL. It is an extremely original film though and you need a strong stomach to watch it, but it's one of those which to start and you just can stop till its finished. Peter Greenaway probably one of Britain's best directors of that time. I now have A Draughtsman's Contract to watch next.

Edit: It also has Jim Davidson in it would you believe, in probably one of his only acting roles. So, as I say, you do need quite a strong stomach to watch the film.

Apologies if this is a stupid question. Can i watch this film and it make sense witout knowing anything about the 'universe' it's set in.

Probably a no. Some films you can get away with it as a stand alone thing.

But this you really need to watch the series first (on Netflix) as ultimately the film is 1 of 3 finishing off from the series.

Sneakers (1992)

I haven't seen this since the VHS days and although it's not quite as good as I remember, it's still a great film. Probably a touch too light by today's standards, but the cast, plot and humour are all great.

7/10

Watched Thursday Murder Club 5/10 - cosy murder with some astonishing accents. Pierce Brosnan as a London geezer is on par with some of Sean Connery's accents, and Tom Ellis is just as badly cast. Why they did not use Ray Winstone is beyond me.

Overall the movie had a couple of fun moments, but like the book it is a switch brain off effort.

Timecrimes (2007) (Spanish). Going through my watchlist of recommendations from elsewhere.

"A man accidentally gets into a time machine and travels back in time nearly an hour. Finding himself will be the first of a series of disasters of unforeseeable consequences"

A great take on the Grandfather paradox and came 6 years before Coherence which had a similar vibe.

7/10.

Watched Eden last night 7/10

Not really heard anyone else mention this, but it#s the latest Ron Howard film. I like some of his films, and the cast is quite good. It's based on a true story (no idea how much is true), but it works well, albeit it has no real replay value due to the semi thriller/whodunnit nature of the story. Normally I dislike films based too far in the past, but as this is set on an Island, it doesn't matter that the whole thing is set in the 30s.

Ana de Armas is amazing, as is Vanessa Kirby. First film I really watched with Sydney Sweeney in it, she was quite good as well. Jude Law steals every scene he is in, as he always does.

Watched 'HIM' - 2/10 : Total dross, the director and writers should not be employed in the film industry imo.
The trailer makes this look like an interesting take on sports and that's what peaked my interest

Turns out its neither a good sports film nor a good horror film, plot wise it goes nowhere and leads to nothing and is in fact a total failure in every regard .
The characters are some of the least memorable I've seen in a while, the writing just makes no sense in many scene's and the supposed plot pay-off at the end is only satisfying because it bring closure on the previous 2 hours screen smears and you can get the hell out.

The overall direction just doesn't work either, not sure if the director was trying to be edgy or different for the sake of it but I was not engaged at any point with any of it
