Road Cycling

It's been very changeable but nowhere near as bad as the forecasts have looked. 3 weeks ago I think I got wet a couple of times, then last 2 weeks only 1 real soaking. Lots of drizzle and 'light rain' where it hasn't really amounted to anything.

Haha but I'm also rubbish at cleaning my bike(s)! Another excuse not to ride in the mud... Typical rain forecast all weekend here with the club run CX, when last 2 days have been glorious!

Couple of them out today got the route marked - https://www.strava.com/activities/15864975288

Got mine down to 9.9kg - full metal guards, zipp 303S and Gp 5000 STR tubeless in 30mm (with inserts). Fairly pleased with that! Was always 11-12kg with alloy wheels & cheaper tyres.

It does say it's got a replaceable Ti derailleur hanger - so likely something they manufacture themselves??? Not impossible they would they make a UDH version and you can just screw that in...

Don't know if SRAM have royalties etc on them - probably. Very much the American way name it 'universal' then have a patent on it so nobody else can use except under licence

SRAM always been expensive but did notice everything else creeping up too... More than just Brexit/imports? Things which cost £21-23 last year on regular deals now around 25-26.

It's not usual you'd be able to choose between internal/external as usually frames+forks are designed for 1 or the other (note the internal size differences in your diagrams)?

The EC44-ZS44 sizing for the headset would usually imply the EC44 upper being an External Cup, then ZS44 being Zero-Stack at the bottom - which is possible... But just sounds strange, possible with the translation it swapped them around? Thin it would be more common to call it ZS44-EC44 - so the external cup was at the bottom. Depends on the cost of them fitting and supplying it to not have the hassle yourself of mixing and matching - some are expensive - but look colour options! https://www.tredz.co.uk/.Chris-King-Inset-8-ZS44-EC44-Headset_250010.htm

With your suspension forks on it you might have to use an external at the bottom anyway? Best read up on the requirements and sizing for fitting them to check. Looking at their website pictures of the builds they are a mix, most with different forks using an external cup... But mixing and matching or swapping around headsets is something I have no experience of. I've always swapped/replaced like for like.

Yeah. It is pricey but more just buying individual adds up to more than just the Force groupset. I debated buying it whole for what I need but then you have the effort of reselling and extra risk/hassle.

For the headset I’ve confirmed I’ve bought the right thing (expensive Cane Creek Hellender 70) and the guy is going to fit it for me. Which saves a lot of hassle.

Question. If you could get a Hammerhead Karoo 3 for €200 (£160) would you?

Seems there’s a deal on the Force shifters to get a pack bundled with the Karoo.
My hesitation is battery life but as long as it can be charged and used together it’s not a massive issue for me.

Current head unit is a Garmin Edge 1030 Plus which is generally ok.

No thoughts on the Karoo but Garmins are getting more and more expensive and their move towards subscriptions coupled with their **** software means I might look elsewhere when I end up replacing my 840. Fingers crossed that won't be for quite a few years though

I love my Karoo 3. Never had an issue with battery as long as you're happy charging after a ride. Even then, I would be fine to ride 50 miles, not charge then ride 50 miles the next day...

Cheers. I don’t think I have any issues with my current Garmin really. Just wondered if it was worth it for the “bundle” price to get something new.

Yeah. I’m sure most rides won’t be an issue. Specs suggest 14hrs. I’m just thinking about something like the Traka where it’ll be close to 24. Although they’re not regular.

Any idea what a Giant Content Ar1 from 2021 in 'fair' condition should be selling for? It's got the odd mark on the frame, would likely need new chain/cassette and some inner tubes as the sealent in the tyres will be knackered?

Not getting use of it, it's outside under a cover, more getting in the way so might as well get rid. Thinking maybe £450ish?

Just trying this. Seems to come up with 59 links which seems madness.

Any idea what one doing wrong?

Your largest sprocket on the cassette is bigger than your largest chainring?

My road bike has 415mm chainstays, 50t chainring, 34t sprocket... 55 inches

Yeah. It’s a 1x groupset with a 42T chainring and 10-52 cassette

Maybe they’re just really short chain stays but my MTB with a 34T chainring and 11-46 cassette needed around 128 links so not sure how this calculates less than half that!

Surely what you're calling 128 links on the MTB is 64 links, as in 64 inches.

So 5 inches more chain than your other bike and 9 inches more than my road bike.

Ah maybe. I assumed a link was a link (ie you buy them at 114/126 etc), and i'd assume you don't throw away half a chain per bike

Guess it's just the terminology and that site needs doubling?

You wot! Thats basically an ultegra level chain for $95! You can get a dura ace one for about £40 so $50. SRAMs pricing is mad outside of their "on bike" groupsets.

This was from the SRAM website, so stupid RRP.

Actual price is around £40. Although this says RRP is €65 so maybe the one i took the screenshot of above was one of the fancy coloured ones

If anyone saw that GPLama video of the super cheap DI2 custom button 3D printer thing......they work REALLY WELL!

Just twisted a guys at work's arm to print some off. 20 seconds to install them, and MUCH more clickable now. Perfect timing as I was struggling a bit with very cold hands this morning.

Makes you laugh when a product that has been through probably years of development, but a multi million (billion?) dollar company, and it can be notably improved by a 3D printed part it took 4 mins to produce and install. The little wins :)

The default ones are ******* awful. When my hands are cold I really struggle to press them consistently.

Ordered some of those gubbins. Never crossed my mind someone would have fixed them.

I've got an alloy Giant Content SL1 - was a warranty replacement in December 2021. Original bike it replaced was a 2015 Giant Defy, 105 level groupset, alloy wheels which cost £960 originally (in 2014). Admittedly rim brake so cheaper...

So yours does sound a bit expensive, assume it was a 'covid bike' so you likely paid over the odds for it then, welcome to the slump. So after spending cassette+chain on it might depend on your spec and how tidy it's looking after that, could be a hard sell, unless you have any friends/work colleagues/etc looking for something.

Think i paid around 1400 for it, no idea what it is worth, 450ish was a guess. more in my way than anything else so trying to find an idea of what would be appealing to people.

I find I have to 'get in the zone' when using them, but still get occasions where I press it (or think I do), and nothing happens. Doesn't help when it takes a while for the Garmin to switch screens too!

Had a proper play with the bike fit app after the ride home. The first suggestion after the one I did last week was lower the saddle 20mm. Did that and did a few more tests, had another 10mm lowering recommendation! So that's 30mm! Oddly, when the saddle was 30mm higher, it didn't feel that bad. Only when I watched the video could I see how extended my legs were.

So these are the comparisons with the latest fit (left), and the very first I did (after eyeballing the setup, and using a bit of the Zwift Ride recommendation)(right):

Taking the measurements with a slight pinch of salt, as I didn't have the camera in exactly the same position each time. But the AI recognition of body points was impressive.

Not sure how to fix the arm angle issue, not sure if I just need to sit up more. That would help back angle too, which is almost out of the green.

Will try a ride tomorrow if I race, but legs are still sore from Sunday's run, but hoping the new saddle and these changes will help.

I really want to try this on my Factor too, but I'm dreading seeing the results lol!

Saddle still looks perhaps a bit high. Doesn't seem to be tracking the angle of your ankle at all. Its hard to tell from the photos as they are low res and a bit dark in areas but your toes still look quite pointed at the bottom of your stroke.
