Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

Any tips for repairing a Nintendo switch where the joycons randomly disconnect/turn off when they're in handheld mode? I can't see anything wrong with the joycons or sides of the switch, but you slot them in, start playing and at some point one of the joycons (normally the right one) will just switch off at random. Tried other joycons from a perfectly working switch and the same thing happens, which suggests it's the main switch hardware itself rather than the joycons at fault.

Also, one screw on the back panel is completely rounded off. Not sure there's much i can do without a tiny diamond drill bit to remove it? as it's also potentially overheating so i need to clean it out somehow.

could be a rail issue, you can disassemble the rail no issue once inside. id just snap the back off take the screw out with some pliers and replace it... you can get them online super cheap.

Ha i didn't even think of looking to see if i can actually get a replacement back. Derp, good idea! :D

I realise your post was old but I happen to have some very nice 3ds systems ATM. If you haven't got one yet I've had a very nice UK white 3ds XL just come in and before I had to leave the country I was building up a nice purple og 3ds that I just need to finish.

No worries, understand you've had a fair bit going on from your posts.

I've not bought anything yet, had my car break down which costing a few quid to repair, wife's birthday, etc, still looking for something just not in a rush, won't be going to theme parks till next year.

YOur trusted on here so would rather purchase something from you if you've got something available

I spotted a crack on the hinge of the nice white one so im now in the process of re-shelling 3x 3ds :) 2 are XL's and then one is an OG once they are done ill post up some pics. I can sort you a system either through my ebay shop or through here. Whatever works for you. But first I will need to fix them and make them like new again.

Well chuffed with myself, had a PS5 controller where the left stick was effectively able to rotate on itself. Turns out the backing bit that connects to the actual joystick part had split, allowing it to rotate. I'm not a hardware person but managed to follow iFixIt to take the controller apart and replace both sticks. During the process I managed to snap one of the ribbon cables for an external microphone so replaced that too!

I'm in no rush, give me a shout when your ready to sell and we'll sort something out.

Had a little time today, so stopped being lazy and finally tackled a 360 controller. Bought the sticks in May, only just done them, so only 4
months :p.

Forgot how nice the 360 pads are to work on, no hot air, no fighting with the stick, soldering iron and sucker, clear hole every time.

Not calibrated them or even tested yet, need to find my wireless receiver. Not done a manual calibration at all, so not sure how fiddly that will be. Would be nice if someone could find a way to unlock software calibration on a 360 controller.

@Armadillo that soldering is lovely.

I saw the latest Stezstix Fix video on my recommendations. Apart from making me laugh it's interesting the low solder fix method was so successful for him. The controllers I fixed earlier in the year are still going strong (the blue DS4 is now around 400+ hours of use) so I haven't had the need to do more. But that's two methods to make a note of for next-time; the custom solder tip, or low melt solder.

Ohh I love this colour! Is that a third party shell? It's so scratch free hah. Hope you feel better soon!

It is indeed an aftermarket reshell. Let me tell you though a 3ds reshell is a level of hell you dont want to put yourself through. The things are a nightmare and ive never had an aftermarket shell I dont have to mod in some way to get working nice.

Is that the whole 3ds family or some models are 'easier' to reshell?

Purple is such a nice colour for consoles and accessories. I don't think I have ever seen a purple console or controller that looks bad.

Today for me was just a disaster. Went to do the 360 controller, got out a wireless receiver, dead, probably the fuse, so off to a good start. Got out the other one, that works. Trying to calibrate the centre, very fiddly, nudged stick way too much, now one hole is always blocked. Will have to pull off the cover and try to reset it :(, hopefully without having to remove it from the board. Soldering all fine, and then defeated by prodding something with a stick :p

For me I've just been chilling today, cleaned the office done some bits around the house do need to do a few 360 pads as they have all sold out and I've got bundles of them.

Shells are in for the 3ds XL systems so I'll post up some bits on them. I have also started ordering in parts for the AES restoration as am keen to get that done.

Got to work today and my junior had his PS2 upside down on the desk. Helped him get it opened and dismantled to swap disc drives... And the one he's ordered is the wrong model, gah.

Still, we cleaned out the console and poked a few things and now his drive has stopped making funny noises and loads games faster. Can't complain!
