Poll: DIGITAL ID - It's coming *** NO GENERAL POLITICS TALK - ONE AND ONLY WARNING ***

Are you for or against the new Digital ID

  • Total voters
    395
  • Poll closed .
That response is a total **** take I think this government are actually trying to sow dissent within the population, everyone should just refuse to use the digital ID - it needs people to go along with it to work but sadly the people of this country won't do that.
I'm not sure what response you expected. These petitions never do anything and ones with far more signatures have similarly been disregarded in the same manner before.

I do see in their reply that they clarify one point; you won't need to have a digital Id to continue working. You'll only need one when you change jobs (and probably get any welfare, pension, etc).

I think the welfare or at least pension aspect is similar to already having a job - IIRC that was one of the things mentioned in an interview with a minister - someone already retired won't need one. I guess someone making a new claim though would?

And in implementing it like that they can claim it's not forced on everyone but in practice as the current pensioners pass and people get/change jobs then it will be in practice for the vast majority of the population.

11 days for a debate date, but I'll be surprised if anything comes out of this said debate, as based on their response (and responses to most petitions), it'll be a complete waste of time.

I don't see how a digital ID stops people coming in illegally...

.

Because it doesn't lol.

They know it's a sore point so trying to sell it on that basis, it's an absolute lie.

They are also doing nothing about illegal immigration either.

The problem is where do we go from here?

You vote Tory, completely incompetent and just looking after themselves.

You vote Labour, quickly becoming big brother like 1984.

Or you vote Farage "Heil Hit.........

Sad times.

All in it for themselves. I’ve always said, democracy is an illusion in this country.

This is the problem, if things don't change drastically I can see a lot of people not voting in 2029.

The petition is not a waste of time. It's up to 2.7m people. All those 2.7m people now know that a large number of other people have the same opinion as them and will be emboldened to speak up. Labour MP's also know that at least that many people hate the idea. No the petition itself won't stop it. But the fear of Labour MP's losing votes might help when it comes to passing legislation.

(That said, Labour are toast at the next election regardless of this)

Let's see. I did see this at the bottom of their response:

We will launch a public consultation in the coming weeks and work closely with employers, trade unions, civil society groups and other stakeholders, to co-design the scheme and ensure it is as secure and inclusive as possible. Following consultation, we will seek to bring forward legislation to underpin this system.

If this public consultation happens, that should reinforce the fact that there is virtually no support for these plans.

Having worked in a few central gov departments over the years I know how awful and clunky getting things done, changing the status quo, investing in inovation and consolidating systems. The behaviours are too engrained, no one is willing to give things a go.

I just thought I'd air some questions to see if I was being too negative! :o

Having worked, and still work as a contractor for a government institution, the amount of incompetence and laziness, coupled with zero accountability, is absolutely staggering. If I had to put a number on it, I'd say that 75% of the money spent may as well have been set on fire. Even the simplest projects overrun by double, triple or even more of the original deadlines. They can take a £500 job to paint a wall and by the time they've had all their consultants in, then the consultants to review the plans, then the designers, the workshops that need to be held, then everything needs to be rescheduled three times because someone called in sick and has no backup, that job will easily be £20k. To paint a wall.

I've not even mentioned the corruption either, which again is so blatant it's unreal.

I've often said to put me in charge of a department, I've changed horrible teams and contracts around in the past and I'm more than happy to do it again. In fact I'm so confident that I'd say I could reduce expenditure by 50% in the first year alone, and have almost all the projects delivered on time.

But nope, it's a lot easier to just let things overrun and cost millions or even billions than spend a few hundred grand a year on a competent team of managers.

I struggle to get my head around it tbh.

I think by public consultation they mean companies, not people, so they can design a system that makes it easier for HR departments.
