What film did you watch last night?

Highest 2 Lowest (2025) 6/10

I was looking forward to this. Denzel is his usual excellent self and makes the most of what he has to work with, the rest of the cast are mostly great too, with the exception of one who is really annoying, not sure if that is by design or accident.

Overall, I felt it jumped around genres a bit too much without really settling on one and the story needed a bit more work.

It’s not bad by any stretch of the imagination, just that we’ve seen better from those involved.

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone 1983
10/10

for me movies sit in 3 categories, 10/10 (i'll watch over and over) 5/10 (i'll re-watch every so often or have it on as background noise) 1/10 (I won't watch again)
I love 70's/80's scifi and post apocalyptic movies
I'm sure I watched that 1/2 a dozen times in the 80's. Used to love that film. I may have to watch it again at some point to see just how badly it's held up :)

Star Trek Insurrection (1998)

Never seen it before.

I've seen the previous one with the Borg queen, that one was much better. This one was a little meh. Just like any regular, maybe above average extended episode I guess. I enjoyed it, probably wouldn't bother again.

Nice to see that cast on screen though, I used to like TNG, not seen any of it for years.

5/10

Caught stealing (LOL?) 7/10, decent, reminded me of Baby Driver a little bit!
We saw that at the cinema. My 17 year old daughter, who normally shows no interest in films, wanted to see it, I think because she fancies Matt Smith and Austin Butler, so it was win win for her. I didn’t need much persuasion once I saw it was directed by Darren Aronofsky. We all really enjoyed it.

Fright Night (1985) A teenager believes his neighbour is a vampire.

Worth a watch, one of those movies you always know about but I just got around to it, fun movie passed the time quickly enough. :)

Ah loved this cheesy romp of a sci-fi as a kid. Used to hire the VHS again and again :p

'The Smashing Machine' - decent, based on true story of Mark Kerr from 1997-2000 and the events in his life in that time. DJ and Blunt both put in a decent shift. 7/10

Yeah, that was said at the time. An average episode of TNG that's got a big budget.

Still better than Nemesis though...

A play, rather than a film, called The Stone Tape by Nigel Kneale (of Quatermass fame).

I actually saw this as a child in the 70s - it scared the hell out of me and I hadn't seen it since.

Its basic premise is that an R&D team from an electrics company installs itself in an old country pile to do some product research. The room they are occupying, as it happens, is haunted by a screeching female apparition (it was the blood curdling screams that originally got me) and, being scientific types one of them postulated that maybe what they were seeing and hearing was the result of a phenomenon in which powerful events are recorded onto solid materials in the environment and played back over time - hence the play's title.

Consequently, they throw all their gadgetry at it in an effort to prove the theory and, indeed, prove it they do but in the darkest imaginable way and, as I don't wish to reveal any spoilers, you can find out for yourselves in the link, below, if you feel inclined to do so .

Some great performances from Jane Asher (Macca's ex) and Iain Cuthbertson, best known for his role in the gangster series, Budgie.

Furthermore, even as an adult, that screeching still sent shivers up my spine so no wonder I needed a nightlight on my bedside table for months on end after having seen it at the age of eight.

F1 (2025)

As someone who's been watching F1 since the mid 80's and never really misses a race, I was expecting this to annoy me with an unrealistic representation of the sport. In that regard it didn't disappoint and was laughably stupid, especially considering how many people from F1 were involved at producer level. I could've easily have paused the film a hundred times to explain to my wife how such and such would never have happed or wa just plain wrong.

But even ignoring all the nonsense, it was still a poor film. The acting was poor, even from Pitt, the dialogue was off the charts cheese, there wasn't enough at stake for you to care and the scripted commentary was just straight up exposition. I wasn't even that impressed by the driving sequences.

3/10
