Got my UGREEN enclosure on Tuesday, dropped a cheap Intel 512 nvme in there.

So you decided not to use the WD Black SN850X 2TB. Did you buy the 512GB Intel NVMe new?

Will do once I upgrade my 2nd system and take it from there. I used an spare 512GB laying around to test.

@malachi Out of interest with the UGREEN enclosure; did you use that odd squishy cream gel strip, which I guess acts as a bridge between the ssd and enclosure lid, or something else?

I actually didn't notice it, I screwed in the Nvme and popped the lid on.

I used the one that came with mine, its like a themal pad to help to dissipate heat. Sits on top of the drive. You can buy them new on eBay and Amazon if you need replacements.

Appreciate the reply. Enclosure is 8 stops away so I guess I'll be for round 2 momentarily ...

e: Success. New enclosure is detected, along with ssd. So, original enclosure was duff; hopefully that's my bad luck for the year!.
e2: Pffft, started a speed test and I'm averaging ~800mb/s read and write. Gah.

Sure you bought an enclosure capable of 40Gbps, sounds like you've got one only capable of 10Gbps.

I think I just have wonky luck. Started another stress test and the drive disconnected. Unplugged and plugged back in. Retested and now getting around ~3000m/s Read/Write.

Apple system information clocks its connected to thunderbolt/usb4 port with 40 Gb/s speed. I think I may quit while I'm ahead.
