PC Upgrade £1500-£2000

I went with:

Just a heads up first boot on AM5 can take up to 15mins for anything to show on screen and may reboot a few times, this is because the motherboard is training the memory so be patient.
Thanks for the heads up, saves me panicking when nothing happens. Order arriving tomorrow so hopefully have it built for the weekend. Are there any changes I need to make in the bios before installing windows?

No just select boot device and away you go you can check the memory speed is correct if you like but definitely worth checking at some point to see if it's running at the correct speed.

Have fun.

Hi, everything seemed to go ok with the build and it posted first time. The only thing I can’t get the PC to recognise is my DVD player so I can install windows from a disk. Bios won’t recognise the drive (plugged in to sata). Any ideas or shall I just download windows to a hard drive and boot it that way? Thanks.

Use a USB flash drive is easiest way.

Hi quick question with the DRAM timing. The data sheet says the timings should be 48-48-48-88 but BIOS only gives me the options of EXP01 @ 6000MT/s 48-48-48-96 or EXP02 @ 5600MT/s 46-45-45-90. Have it set to EXP01 but will the timings not matching up have any effect on the system? Thanks.

Is fine, no worries.

Hi Tetras, quick question on the RAM you advised and I purchased for the build - I have been reading about timings today and it appears what was specified is considered terribly slow with a CL timing of 48 whereas people seem to recommend something in the 30/32 range. Any reason you recommended this to me instead of something quicker?

The X3D CPUs mitigate the impact of slow(er) RAM due to their huge cache, so the real world performance impact is minimal, especially since most benches are done at 1080p / Low settings.

The Crucial kits are (heh, they were, £200 is lol) decently priced and they have the bonus of not needing XMP/EXPO or an increased DRAM voltage to operate, because they use JEDEC speeds.

If the timings really bother you, I expect you could manually dial in the timings and XMP/EXPO settings of a C36 or C30 kit and it'll work.

Seems like I would have benefitted from the lower latency ram in the 1/.1% lows from what I've read, I cannot find any other recommendations online for CL48 RAM... Feels like for an extra £20-£30 at the time it would have been a no brainer to recommend something quicker.

The 48GB kit was a similar price to some 32GB kits, so for me that's better value, especially if it pushes an upgrade further out. I personally would rather run at a lower (stock) voltage and not need XMP/EXPO, than slightly faster with a significantly higher DRAM voltage.

At 1440p, with a 9800X3D and 9070 XT, I'd expect the difference to not be noticeable in the lows, since it is only a few percent even at 1080p with a faster card. You were previously using a 2500K, with a GTX 780, so I assumed you weren't a competitive gamer who wanted/needed every frame.

Like I said though, you can test it yourself. These kits are rated to operate at 1.1v, so I'm sure if you stuck 1.35v/1.4 through it like most C30/C36 kits (and copied the other timings and XMP/EXPO changes from a similar kit and motherboard), it'll operate fine at that speed.
