******Official Star Citizen / Squadron 42 Thread******

Sad thing is most things made with UE can be spotted a mile away, They all have that certain look which cheapens them.
UE has a 'plastic' quality to it, there is a reason for it, UE's default diffuse model is Lambert, that is an old model and no longer used, except in UE, modern engine's that aren't UE use BRDF and THAT presents a 'Photorealistic image'

You can use BRDF in UE but its almost as if they don't want you to constantly making it more and more difficult to switch it.

Its also why UE is so easy to spot, it has a very unique and recognisable look to it, it looks like plastic.

This makes UE5 or 6 whatever the current version look like a last gen engine....

It has some specific features needed for this specific game, just like any other games. That's about it. Games with UE ar far less of a stutter mess than I've experienced with SC where it can't hold 60fps even now, although they keep on talking about how many players they can get online... right.

I'm waiting for the Squadron 42 to actually see how it performs (hopefully it won't be dumbed down and not have the latest features).

They need ray tracing, the limits of raster are still there.

Of all the issues I've had with this work in progress, the graphics have never been one of them.

Honestly the stuff you come out with :P

Anyway I have been playing SC a bit recently for the first time in 6-8 years probably. Surprised how stable it is now and, and runs decent on modern hardware. Looks pretty too in 6k.

I have no idea what I'm doing though, ended up trying to do a mission on Bloom, and just slowly died of thirst wandering around trying to find some cargo I was supposed to pick up. Hmm.

I hope they add some weight and gravitas to the ships. Someone came in over the little outpost I was at, in some big ship, but it sounded and moved oddly lightweight, as if it didn't have any mass. I want a big ship coming overhead to sound epic and kick dust and crap everywhere!

i dont like that they are adding "live" story content to this before it is even released..... it makes it very hard to argue against the massive P2W argument that the game has given that content earned within game is randomly deleted but assets bought with cash are kept..... I am beginning to wonder if this way of delivering content will be the future for star citizen and the game wont become persistent to the unwashed masses until it is almost ready to be sunsetted.

imo if the game is in pre release, then having actual live in game events is not needed...... or if it is now essentially released then in which case assets should be persistent unless gained using an exploit or a bug.

Content deletion is precisely why i gave up on the game Once human ... but even that does not do full wipes.

looking at some of the citcon stuff it looks to me that they are more pushing the narrative that this is now a game, albeit a live service one where new content is still coming. That is ok and is how a lot of modern mmo type games work, but in which case the P2W element here is massive, they need to announce no more account wipes but still allow potential for minor roll backs perhaps..

I fully realise that a lot here will shoot me down for thinking this.... tho maybe a coincidence that those people who do this i bet are highly likely to own those bought assets or have direct access to them in an org so are not having to put up with starting from scratch at the whim of the devs. ;)

RT global illumination is coming and I believe reflections is also in the works.

Yeah, we'll see when it gets here how it will be.

Yup, that's a pretty big issue. Since the ships aren't using some anti grav magical solution, the amount of thrust those engine would push will be huge. Just see what a helicopter does in real life. It also has to be pushed around as you maneuver in atmosphere, based on winds, weight, engines, etc. Although they've redone the flying physics a few times, including taking into consideration atmosphere elements, this hasn't been tackled.

It's not that they do wipes on a whim, it's that it's often necessary due to the nature of the update - and wipes aren't that regular anyway.
In some cases, it happens partly due to a lot of people cash farming via an exploit or a new game mechanic that they usually make extra lucrative to get more people 'testing' it.

Live events kind of need to happen, since it's really about testing mechanics and getting things to work.

Say there were no more wipes and everything persisted from now into the eventual 1.0 release. Wouldn't you have a problem with all the current players having amassed damn near everything vs the new players that waited for release and have bugger all except their starter ship?

Honestly, I think you overthink a lot of this stuff and worry too much :)

The game isn't live so wipes will happen. With SC you are actually getting a real behind the scenes look at what goes on during the development of a AAA game. Things will get added. Some things will work, some things won't, even stuff that is 'good' will get removed because it doesn't fit with other elements. All normal things that happen while homing in on a releasable product.

The point when they say the persistent universe is live and no more wipes will have a massive impact on ongoing development. They aren't anything like close enough to having their core gameplay loops nailed down to consider it yet.

The wipes don't bother me tbh, it was always in the back of my mind so I never played loads in any one patch.
If anything, a wipe can be quite refreshing to explore new loops or just do something different, but I appreciate there are many types of players who the wipes may bother more.

Yeah not worried about resets this end at min. The content and story line events happening are for tens of thousands and if there are things you get from an event you keep such as armour as they are locked to the account rather than by patch or anything.

Ships and monies earned are meaningless till 1.0 and full persistence so there nothing there to care about.

What these events do is get players engaging with an alpha and they can bug fix and such and build mechanics whilst giving the community already there active fun reasons to play. That is tbh solid engagement as far as I'm concerned.
