How good will PS6 be compared to current GPUs?

Probably 2028, won’t hold my breath. Will buy new TV when it’s released, much like I did year prior to PS5 release, though in hindsight was clear the HDR in most console games were totally ****ed when reviewed by the likes of HDTVTest. This time I’ll hold back to see if it’s even worth getting a new TV.

Then when you add in the quality vs performance modes nonsense, I don’t holdout much hope the visuals will go much beyond what we’ve seen this gen (PS5 Pro).

We're very much in the realm of diminshing returns when it comes to improvements in visuals. I think the best we can hope for is a consistent 60 fps across all games, with better ML capabilities that will help reduce the gap performance wise with current high end PC hardware.

It has been slowed to a crawl by a few things. People are unwilling to upgrade as often with graphics cards being so over-priced, so progress has slowed right down as games need to run on the hardware most people own. There is a much stronger push for power efficiency than there was years ago.

Also people just aren't buying new games as they mostly suck. Which is another reason to not upgrade.

What goes in in the PC gaming world filters down to what we see in consoles.

That is my hope. I don’t much care for the likes of ray tracing and such when it tanks your fps because they brute force it. Instead it’s almost universally agreed 60fps (no RT) is far far superior experience than 30fps with *basic* RT and/or native 4K. Most times I couldn’t tell the difference to any real degree to justify halving the fps.

Next gen consoles just need to do away with the quality vs performance modes in general and force devs to better job of making more efficient use of the platform and better engines.

But over-all, just need better games this gen that aren’t re-releases/remasters, minor iteration copy paste jobs (causing open world fatigue) or take 8 years to make (in reality 5 years production hell, 3 years horrific crunch)

Yup, game development cycles are taking too long, too. Crazy to think that many studios might manage only one game per "generation". For example, Naughty Dog might manage to release Intergalactic at the tail end of the PS5 era, but that means we most likely won't see another game from them until the back end of the PS6 generation or even the start of the PS7 ! Having more powerful / performant hardware does nothing to address this problem.

Looks pretty powerful indeed! Zen6 cores + RDNA5 seems to be a monumental uplift on the current consoles, especially for ray tracing. Looks like it could have 24/32gb ram as well

Not really "monumental". Ps5 pro is 16tflops, so ps6 is roughly 2x. If we add say 20-30% performance for zen6 on top of a 9700x then going from the 3700x in the ps5 to zen6 in ps6 is about 2.5x increase. Ram 16GB to 24gb is a 1.5x increase

On top of this the ps6 will actually be two consoles, with the lower end version being handheld and having the performance of a ps5

As for ray tracing, that's slightly harder to compare because we don't have a good baseline for ps5 RT performance, we know it's crap but not sure how crap. My bet is ps6 has same RT performance as current Nvidia desktop GPUs, which may sound impressive to you now but will it still be impressive in 2027/2028?

The only thing that can be considered monumental is going to be frame generation which current consoles don't support but that's a software feature not hardware so it doesn't show up on spec lists

It'll probably be more than 2x powerful, overall im thinking 3x possible 3.5x.

GPU will be much more powerful

I think they might do a regular and pro edition again. Theyve seen how well the ps5 pro sold and I reckon they'll want to repeat that. My guess is £450 for base, £750 for pro version. They might even do a cut down version to compare to the Xbox s as thats a huge untapped market for Sony. Can't see them being much more as people are not going to buy a console for much more than that imo (my kids may also want one as well so hoping they come in at a reasonable amount).

Do we really need this power from game consoles ?

We had a big leap from 2D to 3D, what really much can be achieved now to justify anything like cost?

This time there is going to be PS6 and a Portable instead. They may introduce a pro again years down the line but certainly not at the start
Based on what?
Moore's Law is Dead leaks suggest raw graphics performance will be around 3x PS5, but things like ray tracing will be around 10x. Factoring in this along with RDNA5 improvements and more AI and there will certainly be a big performance increase

I mean consoles barely hit 4k 60 so that would be a good start to be able to do that without needing to upscale or some fake frames gimmick. Anything above 4K 60 on AAA titles I do agree would be a bit overkill for its purpose though. Almost everyone has a 4k capable TV now with at least 60 fps if not up to 120
