What film did you watch last night?

I swear 7/10
biopic about John Davidson (MBE) a Scottish campaigner for Tourette syndrome, who lives in Galashiels. At age 17, Davidson was the subject of the BBC TV documentary John's Not Mad about the manifestations of Tourette syndrome with which he lived, and a number of follow-up BBC documentaries throughout his life.

funny, but serious, and sometimes quite harrowing film that follows John's early life as a teen, and young adult, and then as an adult, coping with and dealing with the consequences of having tourette syndrome, then campaigning to raise awareness of the syndrome, and help other sufferers, to which he was eventually awarded an MBE for doing so.
It was well dramatised, while following his true life story closely, as portrayed in his book of the same title, "I swear", which I may even read now, on top of the movie..
well worth seeing 7/10, and FWIW I think that all Glaswegians have a bit of tourette syndrome anyway

No Country for Old Men (2007)

I know this is a highly rated movie, but I dunno. I won't give any spoilers but I was loving it until the "huh?" moment (if you've seen it you know what I mean) and then it kinda just went off a bit weird, and then just ended.

I liked the directing, acting etc, all very good, but, seriously, huh???????

If I had been watching it on DVD I would have assumed that it had skipped a few minutes.

I dunno man, I know what they were trying to say, I guess, but it didn't click with me.

Maybe I need to watch it again.

5/10
give it a few days, then you might like the ending a little more, then rewatch it in a years' time, I have my own opinion on why the movie ended like it did, which I won't share just yet, maybe later i'll put it in a spoiler tag for you? let me know! You'll definitely give it more than 5/10 then..

Definitely better on a second watch, I remember enjoying 1st time round but being a little confused when it ended abruptly, watched it again fairly recently and it's an easy 9/10 movie for me now and I don't give them scores out lightly.

Psycho 1960. I don't think I have ever properly watched this film all the way through in one sitting, and it would have been in SD anyway. I remember the first half hour up to the famous scene, and remember bits around the very end, but the middle investigating bit I've probably only ever half watched. Anyway, all the current Ed Gein talk got me to want to properly watch Psycho now. I'd never heard of Ed Gein before the current Netflix series, and haven't actually watched that yet, but all the talk how this influenced many films after the event, including Psycho got me in to giving the film a good viewing. I'd give it a good 7/10 based on the effect of pre-knowledge of the story detracting a little bit, given there is no shock at the twist ending. But I can well imagine the shock in the cinemas when it was first show. And as I understand it the filming set the standards for years to come like most Hitchcock stuff. Rear Window is a particular favourite.

Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning (2025)

I think I enjoyed this second viewing a little more than than at the cinema. There's definitely too much exposition in the first 45 minutes, but it does a better job of retrospectively tieing the films together than Spectre did for Daniel Craig's Bond series. I still think they peaked with Fallout, but I've still enjoyed these last two films a lot and will no doubt rewatch the entire series on regular occasions.

The one thing you can say about all the Mission films, particularly from three onwards, is they ooze quality in every aspect. I always get a feeling that everyone involved does the absolute best they can when working on a Mission film. I think that stems from Tom Cruise's relentless enthusiasm and dedication to making the best films he possibly can. Irrespective of whether you like him or not, there's no denying his commitment to his work.

8/10

Good Fortune (2025) - 6/10
A rather slow and not particularly funny comedy with few real jokes but the modern take on the traditional story keeps it relevant and entertaining enough.

Good acting especially from Reeves as the awkward angel but the virtue signaling highly moral message didn’t really land for me and it felt a bit too tame and mature for what it could have been.

Roofman (2025) - 8/10

An entertaining unconventional romantic drama which reinforces the adage that truth can be stranger than fiction.

Great acting performances from the leads and some fun and funny moments in the story where you can’t help but root for the villain, and plenty of nostalgic moments courtesy of ‘Toys ‘R’ Us’ and other simpler times.

Berberian Sound Studio. It's well made and I enjoyed it, but did feel it was a bit too open to interpretation. For something like the last 20 minutes I had the growing suspicion that it was going to just end without an actual plot becoming clear.

It's evident that Toby Jones is losing his mind and reality and fantasy are mixing, but why? Is the whole trip to Italy just in his head, or is it real and something is happening to him whilst he is there?

I watched The Naked Gun which actually made me laugh a few times. It was obviously trying hard to live up to the older films and some of it was bad but overall I enjoyed it.

Came here to say pretty much the same. Some bits that didn't work that well but some others that really made me laugh and lived up to the same levels of fun as the originals.

The Explorers (rented from Apple)

80s family adventure where 3 young misfits end up in the possession of plans to build a spacecraft.

Such a mixed bag. The first half has loads of charm, with the set-up feeling like a Spielberg film. It then sags a little when they get to space and then, good lord, it sucks hard when the aliens show up.

They encounter aliens, are really disappointed by them, then go home. What sort of ending to a film is that?!

Plus… the green alien is soooo annoying. Sooooooo annoying.

4.5/10 overall. If it had continued as per the first half it was tracking for 7/10, but the ending is so underwhelming it’s irredeemable.

Immaculate (on… Amazon?)

A young woman joins a covenant to become a nun. She soon realises that something strange is going on…

I’ll confess, half of the appeal of this was wondering how it was going to get its 18 rating. It does get pretty unpleasant / macabre.

Sydney Sweeney does a pretty good job in her role, but the antagonist is a bit tedious… their whole ‘motive’ seems extremely far fetched (e.g. being so evil for their purpose).

It’s not great, but it’s also a short film so not much of a time investment.

5.5/10
