What film did you watch last night?

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning 4/10

Big letdown considering I liked the previous MI films.

The film is a chore to get through; I needed three sittings to finish it. The first hour feels less like a narrative and more like a protracted montage of callbacks to previous instalments. The pacing and storytelling didn't feel as fluid or coherent. Ultimately, it devolves into "The Tom Cruise Show," with overlong, isolated set pieces like him swimming around inside a ship, hanging off a plane and finding parachutes when there were none, that I found surprisingly dull.

End of watch.
Don't know how I've never come across this before, but it was damn good.
Buddy cop movie set in Los Angeles, the 2 coppers it follows played by Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña.
Zips along at a right pace. Funny, gritty, emotional. 8/10.

The Beast.
1988 film about a soviet tank crew that gets separated from their unit & are then hunted by Afghan rebels, after they destroyed their village.
I watched this as a teenager when it came out & haven't re watched it again until now.
Stood up to the test of time really well & is definitely a hidden gem for war film enthusiasts.
8/10

Master & Commander - 8/10

In 4k with Dolby Atmos it really immerses you. Yes Crowe is very hammy, but that's part of the charm. I'm really surprised it didn't get a sequel.

Watched Reunion on netflix.
A comedy murder mystery film that is neither funny or mysterious enough.
The definition of average.
5\10

Another film I should've seen by now, but haven't. But it's on my watch list.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)

Apart from the production design it's hot garbage, it really is.

By the time Marvel is finished with whatever phase they plan on going to, any money they made up to End Game will be gone. Or they've bet the farm on Robert Downey Jnr saving them.

I mean they pass on actors because of salary demands and then cut John Malkovich entirely from the final film.

How does Joseph Quinn even get anymore acting jobs after his performance in Gladiator 2?

Does anyone even care about Marvel films after so many disappointing films since End Game?

2/10

Mad Max, wasn't impressed, I've seen the sequels before but for whatever reason never watched the first movie till last night. I've known the plot for years, what I didn't expect is for all that to be in the final 20 minutes of the film. :(

Cleansed my pallet with Dimond's are Forever, always gets a panning this one but I like it, starts off nice and strong with it really being let down with the final confrontation with Blofeld.

After Plenty is thrown from the room.
James Bond: Exceptionally fine shot.
Goon: I didn't know there was a pool down there.

That's a bold take.

Aside from it being (in my opinion) a good film, Mad Max is the low budget original that enabled George Miller to return and expand his vision with higher budget sequels. I seem to recall that the original Mad Max is actually one of the most profitable movies ever made. Your coming to it after seeing all the sequels is obviously the wrong way to do it, but I'm still surprised that you didn't rate it if you liked the others.

I never did, I don't understand the fascination at all.

I've seen Ant Man once, I've seen bits of some other ones, Marvel or DC whatever I honestly couldn't tell you which is which.

They are not for me.

'I Swear' - enjoyed this, based on true story of John Davidson who has been recognised for his work in recognising and helping people with Tourettes. He develops it around 13/14 years of age and then he starts getting into trouble in school, bars and clubs when he's older etc.

Funny and moving at times. 7/10

Watched a few over the last few days, varying genres.

American Sweatshop - About a woman who monitors social media posts and has to delete illegal content. Decent, not great but unique look at a perspective so far not shown to often. 6.5/10.

Americana - Not like, but done in a similar format to Weapons - completely different story though. About several different plotlines that come together, different segments, some better than others. Paul Walter Hauser is in one with Sydney Sweeney and I have always enjoyed his performances. Ended well. 7/10.

Your Host - Saw type slasher with Jackie Earle-Haley. If you are a fan of the genre it is a step above the rest and very anti-woke, Jackie clearly having a great time, some very good kills. 5/10 for most but for fans of this type of film 7/10.

The Black Phone

7.5/10

Well done horror with Ethan Hawke, great atmosphere and a mostly solid cast. Really enjoyed the premise, the ending felt a little rushed for what was otherwise bordering on a slow-burn movie but it felt gratifying enough. Might be a hard watch for some given what it's about
It focuses on a serial killer that abducts children, there's hints there might be sexual abuse too but it's not really confirmed within the movie.
, but I very much enjoyed the hour and forty I spent with it.

The Lost Boys - 7/10

Probably a bit generous with my score. I’ve not seen this since I was a kid, but I don’t know, I know it’s highly rated, but it just didn’t really do it for me.

It was very good back in its day, especially on the first watch.
I think its stand out feature was the music and a few of the cast, the plot was nothing special.

I know I saw Beyond Thunderdome in the 80s but can't remember if I ever saw the first two, but I watched the trilogy a year or two ago and can't say I enjoyed any of them, and actually found them quite tedious. There again I haven't really enjoyed either of the new Mad Max films, so maybe that franchise just isn't for me.
