A trip to the dentist, NHS where art thou

*REBOOT* market doesn't seem to have been repaired at all.

With recent news article on government attention to UK wide vetenerary cartel having sewn up the market ,
the dentist situation is still feeling just as bad and more worthy of their attention - are prices exorbitant everywhere.

'mydentist' last time/June was about £70 appointment & £180 for a white filling which took about 20mins,
same tooth now developed a crack near filling (wonder if filling have a warranty) possibly due to loading after earlier work.

Although, he had, I thought, done a good job on that and previous work, wondering if I should shop around,
even though, compared to doctors where I do not mind who I see, dentist work really has to be right first time, so personal experience/loyalty pays off ?

Around £100 for a white filling here (NHS dentist but private treatment as its not offered on NHS). There are other benefits like a tooth extraction which was free treatment on NHS (though I did have to wait around 18 months for an appointment)

dont give up, i was booted out of an NHS dentist for inactivity because they actually counted the covid lock down as inactivity on my part lol. They cancelled an appointment I was due to have just before covid, again not my fault. I complained but they did not care.

anyway i kept asking if there were any new NHS placements and eventually I got a new spot thank god.

Same happened to me.
Thankfully ended up with a private dentist that's 100x better than any dentist I had before.

I went private after years of crap NHS dentists that seemed to be doing work for no reason.
Best thing I ever did. I can get an appointment easily. If in pain I can get seen the same day. It initially cost more but now I've not had any work done in over 2 years so just checkups. Whereas before it was a checkup then book in for work.
Some of that my be down to better dental hygeine but I really dont think I'm doing much different. In fact I'm probably worse now having an autoimmune disease that can effect teeth and gums

dental pain is one of the conditions that most often causes people to inadvertantly take too much paracetamol requiring overdose treatment. problem with teeth is they cause no issues 99% of the time but when they do it can be horrendous (painwise and costwise!). you are much more likely to make use of a dental plan than say holiday/phone/house insurance so personally i would rather have a private plan in place than rely on painkillers and a massive bill when i fracture a tooth/have a dental abscess etc

I’ve always gone private for dental care, I get a 6 monthly checkup and hygienist.
Can still be a wait for an appointment though, if I book early enough it’s fine, never needed an emergency appointment luckily.
My dental care is covered by Denplan.

I had contemplated buying my own scalers instead of hygienist, using them in a mirror is difficult though.

O-well was only £160 this morning - having to travel at 7:30am down the A10 already traffic-jammed was the icing, used the park&ride-my-bike option for first time
e: need to put a picture on things i've purchased

How much are these private plans?

I'm currently with an NHS dentist (took 3 years).
I get yearly checkups and separately I pay for a hygienist privately twice a year.

I just PAYG didn't think there were any plans/insurance policies that might give me reduced prices if I needed treatment ,
perhaps you would get an emergency appointment faster/cheaper with a plan, otherwise paying monthly for a yearly checkup/hygienist doesn't seem beneficial.

[unfortunately it's not like an extended mftr warranty on the car ?]

e: what mydentist has would need to find out what access to our affordable private range of treatments means

It depends on the dentist. My current plan is ~£24 per month and allows me both a dentist check-up and hygeinist appointment every 6 months. It also gives a 10% discount on any further work. At a previous dentist the monthly charge was almost double but the discount was 50%.

Unfortunately due to poor alignment causing excessive wear and a crown breaking, I've still had to fork out almost £7k this year :(.

I think I pay around £20 or so a month, but it varies depending on age and how much dental care you need, my dads is more expensive, but I think it might be because he has had more things done over the years.
It’s pricey but then when I look at the prices of say having a crown done, it pays for itself overtime.
I had a new crown a few years back and I only had to pay a small fee.

I think the general idea is the NHS pays half, so private is double what you usually pay.
interesting point - I payed £160 which as you say is about 2x , what NHS band2 would be
NHS dental treatment costs vary by band: Band 1 is £27.40, Band 2 is £75.30, and Band 3 is £326.70. Most adults pay, but some get free treatment.

the dentist never asks me that will cost xxx do you want to proceed and the private price scales aren't on the wall either
(but the local barbers don't show that either)

Didn’t go for some 20 plus years, when I still lived with my parents basically. Never had an issue, then it all came at once. That was a joy.

Sick of looking at those dead flies on the ceiling whilst they poke about gossiping.

You're going private, if you have to ask then...

NHS dentist waiting list was taking far too long (registered end of 2023, but finally got appointments for next week).

Any dentist in Portsmouth offering NHS appointments is getting booked pretty much instantly - not everyone can afford to go private in the meantime.

Decided to pay for us to have a private checkup in March - £90 each for me & wife, £60 for each of the kids. All three referred to private orthodontist for braces, but I learned this can be billed to the NHS, which is a huge relief.
