Got a snuggle buddy for my two Flex 2.5Gb mini switches to replace the Express 7 and then a U7 Pro XGS mounted on the ceiling to sort the wifi out :)

The CGF has got to be one of the best devices that Ubiquiti has ever made. Such a powerful little box.

Gotta pull up some flooring to run a new supply line to the kitchen, going to run some Cat 6 upstairs to the home office, and probably dump some in every room just for future proofing. I've got solid wireless with my APs, but considering running some CAT6 to the loft too and putting my AP on the hallway ceiling. Bit of extra faff though, have to have a think.

Anything else future proof worth running these days? I'm a big fan of wired connections still.

Probably a silly question but the likes of a UCG-Fiber can still be used with a modem/supplier router in modern only mode can't it? It definitely doesn't support a FTTC connection alone does it.

Yes. I used mine this way with Virgin with the SH in Modem Mode.

I now use it in PPPOE directly to the ONT.

Main things I go with - Run more runs of cable than you think you need, it's minimal extra cost, but saves effort in the long run if you have a problem with a connection, or want to add something else in.

Also, consider if you want to run higher speeds anytime in the future. e.g. Do you want to put a fibre cable in to run 10Gb to another location?

Could you not do that using the groups and or zones?
Not directly.

There are some workarounds that I've found online, but it just adds to the complexity in what's meant to be a very user friendly UI. I also couldn't get port forwarding to work with my VPN, but I don't know if that was a VPN issue, or a config issue on my end.

If you setup a port forwarding rule, your WAN interface is just WAN1/WAN2/All WAN (more/less options depending on what you have). Ideally, one of these options would be the VPN client.

Has anyone successfully got Pihole adblocking working correctly? I have a UCG Fiber, two piholes, one on a physical Pi, the other a container on my NAS. Been working fine for years, new internet connection so i got a new router. I have a few network defined, pihole is set to primary and secondary DNS servers on all networks and DNS itself is working and resolving, however Ad blocking is not working. What am i missing here? Also on the Pi i have Tailscale installed, i can remotely access home and its also an exit node, so i can route my traffic remotely through it, however again PIhole is not filtering Ads. Any assistance grately received. UCG is on 4.3.9 and the Network is on 9.4.19

Strange you bring this up I ran Adblock Home on my NAS, and couldn't get that working by setting the IP on my WAN DNS settings, and all Networks set to Auto.

I wouldn't run cable without this, nowadays. A high quality bend-resistant (G.657.A1) 15 metre OS2 single mode LC/UPC cable is less than £4. It's pointless not including a couple when you're running cables imo. Once you have a fibre spine, modules and switches are cheaper than copper, too.

I can't really add anything apart from that i had PiHole setup on a RaspberryPi a couple of years ago with a Unifi router, and it worked fine. Had a Adblock Home setup on a router flashed with OpenWRT more recently and that also worked fine with my CGU.

Set DHCP so that clients get the UniFi gateway as their DNS server, then on your UniFi Gateway set Internet to use the local devices. Give it a try, additionally things like policy based routing will need that config.

Has seemed snappy so far, got the SSD tray and put in a 500GB spare drive I had for now.

I've setup some EFG setups for customers at work and you would not know this is the home/SMB model.

Looks like it runs the apps off the SSD when it has one installed, it's running a single G4 bullet atm, I think it will be joined by a G4/6 instant and a G6 door bell so i'll want the capacity with those extra cams.

Does anyone have experience with the Access Intercom or Access G3 Reader Pro? I want to install a smart doorbell which can trigger my gate to open so I need to use the Gate Access Hub plus either the reader or the intercom and I can’t decide between the two.

I’ve got 2 x AC Lite access points serving WiFi in my house. I’ve had them for around 8 years and they’ve been flawless in that time.

I’m wondering whether or not it would be now be worth upgrading them as they are getting on a bit now. I mean they still work fine but newer devices now support faster WiFi. One of them is also quite yellow which is strange as no one smokes. Possibly heat discolouration?

Right, I promised an update:

Firstly, I know the cabling needs improvement, but its better than the chaos it was sprawled all over the place !

We've moved into a 1780's stone cottage. Unsurprisingly, wifi doesn't travel, and there are 2 outbuildings - one we use as a craft studio, one as my study that also has a workshop. The plot is about 1.7 acres.

I've ended up daisy chaining several Flex XG 10GBe Switches, and then at each switch (bar one) i've got a 10Gbe downlink to an 8 port Flex 2.5 Gbe. switch that has other ethernet devices and/or an AP connected. There are some runs to APs off the Flex 8 2.5 Gbe switch in the main house.

I did get a cheap U7 XGS Pro 10Gbe Access point which I've set up in the lounge as thats quite a congregation area for us all to get together.

I've heard of quite a few discolouring over the years. a mixture of heat & UV I think.

In terms of upgrading, it depends if you're happy with the Wifi performance you have currently. Yes, U6/U7 devices will give you better speeds, and likely more reliable connection, but if you don't have anything high data rate on your wifi & you don't have any connection problems, I would be tempted to leave it as it is, until the devices are no longer supported (unless you just have an upgrade itch!)

Yeah it’s probably more of a tinkering/upgrade itch tbh. They work perfectly fine and I’ve never had any reliability or performance issues.
