I recall reading last year that Sony / Playstation had a profit margin of approx. 5%, but for more security were looking to increase this to 10%. I think that's the level where most of the industry tries to operate at. In comparison, 30% is being extremely greedy.

30% seems somewhat arbitrary and not a realistic expectation for the industry.

It may be a ploy to promote further investment, or an attempt to balance the books of a loss making business. Or maybe a bit of both.

Seems like the writing is on the wall for Xbox though. Shame really - I feel a little sad. But hey ho, them's the breaks and all that jazz.

If nothing else, next generation will be interesting to see what strategy will work best, the high priced, premium "console" from Microsoft that has multiple storefronts. Or the more traditional Sony strategy, that may release a less powerful, but far cheaper console.

Everything has got to fund the AI, when that bubble pops, wowsers.

Ultimately the platform is only as good as the content available on it.

Whoever can provide top games for reasonable prices (hardware + software) will win the day. At the moment, it seems Sony has the advantage. I'd say MS could pull it back given their studio portfolio but this news puts that in doubt. I feel they would need to bin the concept of day 1 on gamepass and produce some top drawer new IP's to redress the balance.

I'm not going to buy a "premium" console. If I want to play games with excellent performance that requires a decent hardware spec I'll just get a gaming PC that can play games and do so much more besides.

Outer Worlds 2 is a stuttering screen tearing mess on S/X in any mode. It’s giving me a headache playing it. I think the settings are borked as changing between the three graphics modes makes no difference.

Edit - restarting seems to have helped a bit still no difference in the settings though.

“Multiple recent reports confirm that
some settings in The Outer Worlds 2 on Xbox Series X, particularly graphics settings, do not appear to function correctly. This is a known issue for the game at launch, and several reviewers have noted a lack of polish in this and other technical areas. “

Personally I'd argue Microsoft's new box is a Windows 11 PC and not a console. Whether this renewed focus on Windows 11 can gain Microsoft some control of the lost PC gaming market remains to be seen. It feels more and more that this new box is to help transition some of the existing Xbox/Game Pass audience to Windows 11. There's so much that is unclear with Microsoft's strategy that it's hard to have any faith in them the way you can with Sony, Nintendo & Valve.

Was my thought too. I know so so so many households that simply do not have a windows laptop/desktop in their house. If xbox could make a console that ran some version of Windows too, I feel this could be a good way for them to try get windows back into houses.

Sarah Bond said it in that AMD/Xbox announcement video; "to ensure Windows 11 is the number one platform for gaming".

They really need to drop the number part. It's Windows. No one cares what version. It's like no one says I use android 15 on my phone. It's just android

Windows Xbox?

Yea, that's true. Maybe do the Mac thing of names rather than numbers. Although I suppose they tried that with Vista.

I recently just did a year of core, due to the outlandish Ultimate costs and tbh don't miss it bar the odd free game to try.

If anyone plays battlefield 6 and wants to group up add me for some grouped up games much better than with randoms.

With Halo now coming to PS5 Xbox has no exclusive games. With the new Xbox heavily rumoured to be a PC variant a bit like the Rog Xbox ally I think Xbox games consoles are pretty much ended.

It’s all a bit crap.

There dead in the traditional hardware sense.

There next consol as it were will be a pc under tv with a custom os like that’s on the Xbox ally x

There doing what steam attempted years ago with the steam pc imo that’s the next part

Gaming has fallen off of a cliff, thank god for the few indie devs that are keeping it alive.

Thing is, I don't have much confidence that Microsoft can produce an interface / OS that is streamlined enough for gaming. They have been trying to do this for the best part of two decades and failing. I'd argue that if someone wants a small PC device "under the TV" to give a console like experience just build your own SFF PC and install a Linux distro ( or Steam OS ) on it. Also, I'm confident that building your own PC will end up cheaper than buying a pre-built from Xbox / Microsoft, particularly when you factor in upgradeability.

I don’t have confidence they can do it either for what it’s worth.

I don’t even like there current Xbox os its crap, it’s filled with ******** that’s not needed much prefer PS5 interface. The last time they did a good one was the original blades system of 360 imo.

I still think it’s what they will aim to do mind. Like I’ve said before it’s a massive shame as they got the original Xbox and 360 right in so many ways then just threw it all away one mistake after another

It'll be awful. I think the new ROG Ally has given a glimpse of that. For me the big issue with their venturing into the PC space is Steam. Steam is a platform I can take anywhere and I have far more confidence continuing to build my already 20-year old library there. This new Play Anywhere, Xbox App, Windows push is largely irrelevant.

I'd much rather they had concentrated on Xbox as a console and backed that properly 10+ years ago. That said Xbox 360 would still rank as one of my top-five favourite consoles of all-time. Just a shame that the company that was so innovative back then has gone.

Your idea seems worse to me. Build a custom pc and install Linux. You've already lost a majority of the customers
