What film did you watch last night?

Frankenstein 5.5/10 (5 being average).

Really? May I ask why?

Personally I'd give it a solid 6.5-7.5 out of ten and I came to this thread for the same reason. It's not a super faithful movie adaptation of the book but is far better than most, the actors by and large were spot on. The sets and even relatively small things such as clothing were well done. There was the odd dodgy special effect admittedly, and I do think the creature interactions from the creator could have been better fleshed out. But overall I'd argue it's by far the best movie adaptation of the material, I really enjoyed the time spent.

The movie hung together, not sure I got hooked by the characters and interactions. i thought the ideas portrayed the story but it’s just the execution, if the ideas weren’t there it would be below average (<5). People tend to treat 7.5 as average “ok”.. but 5 is average..

True Romance (on Now TV)

This was advertised on Now TV as a crime thriller starring Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette… sure whatever… will give it a whirl.

Then the following names came up on titles:

Dennis Hopper
Val Kilmer
Gary Oldman
Christopher Walken
James Gandolfini
Brad Pitt
Samuel L. Jackson

Then: written by Quentin Tarantino!!

Wtf!!! My face! How have I not heard of this film?! I feel like I’ve been living under a rock.

Most of the above actors have very small parts… in one case maybe only one line, but that is a crazy good cast!!

Fortunately the film delivered and it did feel like a ‘missing’ (to me) Tarantino film. A good crime caper, similar in plot to Old Country for No Men but less artsy and more ‘Tarentino cool ’, with a dash of wacky / aloofness. It’s amazing how many memorable characters are in this despite their fleeting appearances.

It was quite intense but also ‘light’, nothing too heavy or requiring much thought. I found that refreshing.

Really very good.

9/10

Black Phone 2
Watched it and it's terrible..

It's nothing like the first one and for half the movie, I felt like it was some sort of weird psychedelic vhs dream sequence . Didn't even make it to the end

2/10

Frankenstein - 8/10

I thought it was really well done, a bit long and a few changes to the source material. Everyone acted their heart out, kudos to Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac as they did brilliantly.

Sad thing is, I asked my 73 year old mother to watch. She thought it was great, a bit long but that the 'Monster' was hot.......no, no, no omg.

Might give it a go though didn't like the De Niro version at all.

I'm a bit of a Karloff/Lee purist. Same with Dracula though Lugosi/Lee there.

We watched Star Trek (2009) last night. I think we’re going to watch Once tonight.
My son has just got to the age where there are a myriad of classic 90s-00s movies he can now watch

I think if you enjoy the 'Frankenstein' story with the nuances then this is a brilliant adaptation. A few changes from the source but nothing worth complaining about. Some fantastic performances and visually beautiful. Could 10-20 mins have been shaved? Sure. But I was invested in all the scenes. Everyone will be different and I did enjoy the De Niro version but this is told differently but hits a lot of the same points.

Predator Badlands - 7.5

It takes a minute to get used to the idea of the Predator being the protagnonist but the movie does it in the best way I can think of. It is brutal but as it's not human blood it can lower the rating. Liked Elle Fanning's character but I am a general fan from 'The Great'. Really worth a watch and beats most Predator movies for entertainment.

unbearable weight of massive talent - 7.5/10

its clearly very silly, but entertaining. I've always loved or loathed Nicholas Cage films. I enjoy the way he doesn't take himself seriously at all

Ghostbusters II (1989)

Just watched this with my 7 year old. He loved it, although he doesn't want to go upstairs on his own now lol.

I actually think this one is marginally better than the first, not that there is much in it.

Not often I'd hand out this score, but honestly, I loved this as a kid, and today, 36 years after it was released, I can quite honestly say I still loved every minute of it.

10/10

Predator: Badlands (2025) - 7/10

A family friendly Predator movie with all the modern tropes including a comical sidekick and a plot which focuses heavily on the importance of family.

It’s a fun and entertaining action film with great special effects and some inventive creature designs, lots of fast paced and violent fight scenes and some beautiful moments of calm amidst the storm, but the humanizing of the lead character doesn’t at all fit with what they are supposed to be.

The plot’s story beats are well placed but none of the fights felt truly epic and some of the scenes were too dark to make out what was going on.
Sounds terrible.

Predator for the modern age but without all the good stuff from the modern age.

:(

Predator, fun? Really? What were they thinking, pound/dollar signs I guess :(

You must be the first person ever to say 2 is better than 1.

I saw this at the cinema when I was 8 in '89 yes I loved it as already loved Ghostbusters from the film and cartoon but it's not as good as the original.

They toned it done and gave it more of a vibe to the real Ghostbusters series so it would appeal to kids more.

Avengers : Age of Ultron, my son (12y) is making his way through the MCU films and we are now up to the second big Avengers outing. Much better than I remember it being; there's loads going on and yeah it's a bit all over the place but the action is great. Also fun seeing how small bits are linked/referenced going forward. 7.5/10.
